Are there books you’re curious about, but the LENGTH intimidates you?

For me:

Johnathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
The Priory of the Orange Tree
Gideon the Ninth

to name a few…

There are a plenty of books that I want to read, but it’s not just the length or anything, rather my ADHD won’t give me the chance to do so!

Audiobooks are great, when I remember to stick with it…

Any particular titles come to mind?

Brandon Sanderson books come to mind and the same with George RR Martin and others writers to have similar lengths in their novel series.

I only have one Brandon Sanderson book and it is a mission to finish and stick to whether physical or audio and George is the same. That book is the The Way of Kings and even on a good day, to finish that book is a challenge. Just finishing physical novels are a mission these days.

If we are counting manga/manhwa/manhua, then the ones with over thousands of chapters that make One Piece feel short. I want to read those just to see why the hell it is so long and what is happening in the story.

However, before I knew about my ADHD, I did listen to audiobook versions of the Lunar Chronicles and other books that were YA and could actually finish.

Though, I don’t read YA anymore and don’t want to.

So, yeah, those thick books that you can use as some doorstopper.

I liked Strange & Norrell, and Piranesi was even better. Susanna Clarke’s one of my favorite writers! I wish she’d write more, gosh darn it.

As for long books, I have these sitting on my Kindle but haven’t started them yet because of the length:

The Golden Notebook / Doris Lessing, 688 pages
Gravity’s Rainbow / Thomas Pynchon, 760
Underworld / Don DeLillo, 827
1Q84 / Haruki Murakami, 928
Gormenghast Trilogy / Mervyn Peake, 964
Infinite Jest / David Foster Wallace, 1079
In Search of Lost Time / Marcel Proust, 4215

And I bought Perdido Street Station since it’s on sale today at Amazon, 640 pages. (♯^.^ღ)

@Churro has told me this before, but there are a lot of romance novels that are thicker than they really need to be. Sometimes you end up with a very simple story that is 200 pages more bloated than it really needs to be in order to hit the required word counts.

Only 640?? :open_mouth: Maybe you got one where the words are smaller and more condensed. Mine was over 800 pages.

Hope you enjoy it. It was…it was a thing. I can’t get it out of my head.

Are there any manga you want to get into, but the number of books in the series intimidates you?

I had a thought today.

A birthday and people who have passed

You know how you have a birthday, right? And you might celebrate your birthday either on the exact day or a few days before or after.

Now, think about this: there are a bunch of people in the past who have died on the day you were celebrating your birthday. I don’t mean the specific day you were born. Just the day you celebrated your birthday.

You don’t even know that person. They don’t know you. No one related to them knows you. You don’t even know how many of them exist.

But some of them you happen to find out about like in the news and stuff.

Do you somehow owe it to those people to live the best life?

I know exactly why I started thinking about this because there was a little girl with a disease who had documentaries made (called the Mermaid Girl because of her condition) and I watched them. I didn’t know then, but later learned that on an October 23, she died. She was only a little girl and she died.

I keep thinking about her because (from what I saw in the docs) she was so sweet and had a whole life ahead.

And it was October 23 that she died.

That’s when I would celebrate my birthday.

Do I owe something to her somehow? She doesn’t even know me. Her family doesn’t know me. I’m a complete stranger halfway around the globe.

But I think about her.

I sometimes try not to. Then I wonder if maybe I need to somehow.

It doesn’t get make me unable to do things, but I wonder if anyone else has thought about similar things like this.

Absolutely! If she is a pure and sweet hearted girl, she won’t hold a grudge or be jelous of you.

Then again, two of the people who were born on my birthday were Hugo Chavez and Souja Boy. I also share my birthday with Lance from Voltron: Legendary Defender. So maybe I am not the best person to ask…

Personally, I feel like the entire human race is ultimately related; I mean, we all come from a single amoeba that divided in half or some such thing, eh? We share a common ancestor…? So hell yeah, you owe it to your 150² cousin 400k times removed to live a damn good life! ( ˆ◡ˆ)۶ ٩(˘◡˘ )

I wanted to continue Detective Conan, but golly gee, I don’t think I can and mainly because I prefer action/adventure/magical story with some serious worldbuilding in a fantasy or science-fiction setting.

I don’t mind crime fiction, but honestly, I can only handle so much of it. The only crime manga/anime I enjoy wholeheartedly was Cowboy Bebop, Lupin the 3rd’s movie: The Count of Cagliostro, Death Note, and there are more but my mind is blank now.

Another reason for not continuing Detective Conan is because it angers me so much. I get that without this thing that happened, there probably wouldn’t be much of a story. It’s just I wished Shinichi mind his damn business and didn’t chase after the Men in Black while on a date with Ran, like damn bro! Episode after episode of him trying to get back to normal size while solving crimes is just mind numbingly exhausting to me.

I am sorry, but I tried the anime and it is a mission to get through. People always rag on One Piece being long as hell, but Detective Conan is way longer than that and I don’t care if OP is more popular than Conan. I just don’t understand why it has to be that long, when the whole thing could’ve been avoided if the main character didn’t interfere and stayed with Ran.

Yeah, I get that he is a teenage detective, but he ain’t getting paid and shit so why bother so much with something that could have gotten him killed instead of turned into a child, if he just MIND HIS DAMN BUSINESS!!!

Damn…rereading my comment made me realize that I was venting/ranting when I really didn’t mean to! LOL!

Only truly evil people hate seeing strangers happy.

I think the turned into a child part was a weird move, tbh. I know it gets people invested in the character and they want to know if he will ever be a teen again, but it’s like they gave him Pokemon syndrome (I’m calling it that). You know how Ash would never meet his father? If he did, the show would end (supposedly. Did viewers ever get to see his father? Idk.) Conan is NEVER going to change into a teen again because that means the show would end.

They do not want the show to end.

Because it sells :woman_shrugging:
