Oh, a few videos on this subject.

How I felt relying on Google Translate for support with my Japanese study…

(Never Use Google Translate!)

A selection of AI language translation apps and devices that are almost a year old now.

My partner uses it all the time for work. I don’t think the prof used DeepL though  He probably doesn’t know about it

I’m not overly fond of Santa’s chances for evading modern radar systems when even the shape, size, position, and production materials of a “stealth” aircraft’s outer screws or rivets can determine their stealthy-ness (the likelihood of their detection, and the range at which they are likely to be detected). The stealth aircraft’s design also plays a major role here. Note how the F-22* (for example) doesn’t have any straight (horizontal or vertical) lines or edges when viewed from the front. Everything is set at an angle.* This helps dilute any potential radar return signals.

This is one reason why I’m hesitant to consider ESL teaching in Korea or Japan for next year, even as a working holiday.

Yet I’m also fascinated by the concept of AI-assisted medical research developing brain chip augments that allow for Matrix-style data and skill set uploads. My first priority would be installing about a dozen language packs (with native-level proficiency), followed by as many martial arts techniques.

Given that Google is utter trash for translations, have you experimented with Perplexity.ai or Grok for Japanese to English or English to Japanese?

In my very limited experience they seem to do an okay job with Japanese to English. I follow several Japanese government / travel / news pages and a few dozen anime / manga* style (AI?) illustrators on twitter (X), and the built-in translator hasn’t given me any issues yet.

*Yes, I have an anime problem. No, I don’t want any help…just more hard drive space…

Oh, another AI software that should be available next year is a real-time voice translator for Microsoft Team calls that can handle most of the world’s major languages. I can see so many things go wrong with this if some comedic hackers get into the source code.

Topic: Do you ever feel like the horrible thing happening to your character is somehow not horrible enough? So you start packing more things on top of it? Then take a step back and realize, whoa, wait a moment…is this too horrible?

I feel like as writers, since we are often writing about fictional characters, we don’t realize how devastating whatever thing we do to them actually is. I find myself thinking “no, it’s not enough for her sister to die a horrible death. MC must witness the death of her mother and best friends as well. And then, also, the enemy goes to massacre her entire clan. That will do it.”

But I take a step back and think about it (and watch true crime documentaries) and realize that losing one person should carry enough weight. It’s horrible enough. I don’t have to make it so that MC’s entire clan is murdered for her to want to pursue the enemy in revenge.

Her sister can be taken from her, and it could be enough to send her over the edge.

Trauma is not enough to develop a character. It can be an important facet but cannot serve as the entire identity. Please keep in mind your story’s tone and audience, compare to other books and your inspiration.

Sort of! I’ve recently done something similar in that I suddenly realized my protagonist wasn’t naughty enough. He needs to be redeemed by the end, so he really needs to be more wicked in the beginning. So I added little evil things for him to do, but now I wonder if maybe he’s totally unlikable now. Got to pare it back a bit, methinks… (♯^.^ღ)

That is true. The example was something taken from my story’s old version where I packed on terrible things. I previously thought she has to be so incredibly traumatized and hellbent on revenge to want to leave the world she’s never left and venture out into the unknown.

Now it’s changed drastically. The genre being dark fantasy now has also made it easier to shape the story.

Her reason for wanting to leave won’t be about the death of her loved ones. In fact, based on her personality, if her family dies, she will be the only successor as clan leader, so she wouldn’t want to leave. It wouldn’t make sense for her to abandon her race either if she thinks she’s the only one that can protect them because “chosen one” trope, she has the magick.

Her reason for wanting to leave will be because she wants to so desperately protect them.

Not sure exactly what will make her leave…but I’ll figure something out :stuck_out_tongue:

Depends on what evil things he does. If he hurts vulnerable people (animals, old people, kids, etc.), I think that’s enough evil on it’s own. If he pickpockets, then yes, maybe add something more for him to do

This isn’t a topic. I just got a terrible cold with the worst cough and fever, so if you were wondering, huh, Enna isn’t chronically on Wacky, I’ve been in bed.

I’m actually in bed now with my laptop, so I can let people know I might be semi-unresponsive for a while longer… bleh.

I have a line and try not to cross that.

Traumatic experiences aren’t the only things that define characters, and there are plenty of hardships out there that aren’t necessarily trauma related that can make a character grow just as much
