We stay up for the countdown, get drunk, watch the firecrackers on our street. Nothing special, but it’s fun! Have a great time at your parents’ house, and happy new year! ( ˆ◡ˆ)۶ ٩(˘◡˘ )

Topic: TikTok is going to disappear for U.S. users

I live in Japan and don’t use the app, so, not my problem

How do you guys feel about it?

I don’t use it, so not my problem either. I hate portrait oriented videos, although I do like their puzzle captcha thing way better than Google’s.

For anyone with money, this offers a fantastic opportunity to build a replacement site like Bluesky did with Twitter. Otherwise, I suppose all those TikTokkers are going to flood back into YouTube…? ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯

I do feel sorry for all the TikTok authors who hoped their books would go viral on TikTok. I suppose their publishing houses will have to start doing their jobs now and promote their books like they’re supposed to instead of dumping the marketing on their writers, but I guess we’ll see…

Why are so many people wanting to keep an app that censors them so much?

Don’t worry, Little Red Book is out there and censors words like “gay” and “Taiwan is a free country”. Tik Tokers will love it.

I’ve never heard of it before, but you’re right–it sounds like something TikTokkers will love! (>‿◠):v:

Worried about TikTok while other, more dire things should be dealt with… honestly America

Oh, there’s more to it.

  1. The ban only stays in effect if they don’t get the “Chinese controlled company” out of owning it. They sell, and it’s magically back on-market.
  2. The problem is that the US government absolutely has the right to ban foreign companies under the grounds of espionage, and Tiktok collects as much data as Meta (which is as invasive as hell). So, there’s nothing wrong by the rules that the government acts on to ban it. The law is pretty legally sound.
  3. Some of the rules are in there to control Meta, Twitter, and Bluesky, not just shut down Tiktok, so that announcement of changes that Zucchini did a week or so back and politely said he looked forward to working with the current president was about this law and staying in compliance. So, yes, this STILL affects us if we don’t use Tiktok–but at a level that we might not notice what changes are law-induced.
  4. Online is currently raising hell about Zucchini being some sort of closet Republican incel because he’s complying with that law, because people don’t know it’s this law, and just folding to Cheeto. Correcting any of this is a waste of time. Biases.
  5. This was made bi-partisan legislation before the elections. Biden signed it into law. It has nothing to do with the current president other than being a law that’s shoved off on him, and it’s in SCOTUS hands until they make a decision. Now, he was the one to speak out about it in 2020ish, but did nothing, and he’s more against it now, so who knows?
  6. The only way SCOTUS can overturn this is if they finally declare Tiktok a platform/utility, and keep it up for freedom of speech. They have been avoiding “utility” route for ages. Considering the infrastructure problems we have right now, “good enough for government control” isn’t encouraging.

Never used it, though I’ve heard plenty about its ban recently

And already seeing it become unavailable based on some of my peers’ screenshots
