I love abnormal psych. I love writing characters with disorders which aren’t usually very well-known or are very misunderstood and therefore increasing representation of people with those disorders to bring awareness to them :))) it makes me feel like i’m making a difference in the world, in my own weird way. maybe i’ll even be published someday and it’ll reach wider audiences.

Topic: Questions about Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer
- If Rudolf is electrocuted, would his nose go out?
- Or is Rudolf’s nose more like bioluminescence and made of the same stuff as fireflies or glow worms?
- If Rudolf gets old, would his nose be dimmer?
- Would Rudolf’s offspring also have glowing noses, or was Rudolf somehow special and magical and the only one?
- If Rudolf is magical and Santa is magical, and Santa is kind of magically immortal, does that mean Rudolf might be immortal?
- If Rudolf’s nose is like a lightbulb, could he press it against paper and burn a hole?

• I suspect his glowy nose is organically powered like with bioluminescence, so it would produce light but no heat and no electricity, therefore it couldn’t burn a hole through paper or get shorted out when electrocuted
• Squids and other bioluminescent creatures don’t grow dimmer with age, do they? So I assume Rudy wouldn’t either
• I would assume his descendents would likewise have bioluminescent schnozzles, unless they somehow mutated
• According to Wikipedia, Santa died back in the fourth century and then was venerated as a saint, and presumably became immortal in the same way that angels are supposedly immortal…? So if Rudolph died, then he too would become an immortal angel. (੭ˊᵕˋ)੭‧˚₊･*̥✧

I found this on r/ncd last year and I almost shorted my monitor with coffee from laughter. Although (poor punctuation aside) you probably need to be a military enthusiast to understand most of the humor.
I’m somewhat confident Santa avoids Israel and the Med for self-preservation, not for religious reasons,* especially during December last year (the Israeli Air Force was not in a welcoming mood). There would have been so much active radar in that region Rudolf & Co could be microwaved mid-flight. And that glowing nose would be a missile-magnet.

I like this XD I think the glow, it makes most sense that its bioluminescence. I mean, you could just say it’s magick, but its more fun to think that it was a real thing Maybe it’s a line of reindeers who were fed fireflies.
I thought someone might bring this up I’ve also heard a theory that he was the fourth king on his way to see the baby Jesus, but then he died helping someone and was turned into an immortal saint. Or something like that.

New topic: Has anyone tried translating? Or editing something translated by AI?
So, some of you might know, but along with writing I have a part-time academic-related job, basically doing translations and English editing for professors at odd times of the week.
I was, at first, worried that AI would take over and be the best thing and the worst thing for translators, but you guys, I can immediately tell when AI has been used for English translation on something and it is a complete LITERAL translation.
It’s relatively okay with names of things or names of policies or studies or whatnot, but when it comes to sentences expressing ideas or explaining plans, it completely loses it.
I read it, and like, what ARE you talking about?? So, of course that means I have to go to the source (Japanese in my case), and if you know anything about government writing or academic writing, it uses words or phrases people don’t use in day to day life.
So, I have to make sure I get all the nuances in there while also trying to figure out what this six-line sentence in Japanese written by a government person is actually saying.
It can be a bit of a nightmare…
It would have been less of a headache if AI didn’t translate it, to be honest. I had to completely rewrite the entire section. It would have been so much easier if the prof just gave me the Japanese to translate.

Years ago a friend of mine wrote a short story in German. I don’t know any German, but I used Google Translate and two other machine translators to translate it into English. Each site gave me a slightly different translation, so I edited the results to put together a translation that made the most sense to me in context.
When I showed her the translated version she said it was a good translation, but to be fair she was the kind of person who would’ve lied to spare my feelings even if it was a terrible translation. The story made sense to me, though, so I assume it was fairly close to accurate. ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯
But that was the type of thing I used to think AI would be really good for–it just requires a human to proofread it. Seems like it’s being used to replace translators and creators instead, which was always the worst case scenario and the one we hoped would never come to pass. (♯^.^ღ)

Several years ago I attempted to learn Japanese for a optional University topic. I soon discovered two additional facts about switching between (Australian) English and Japanese.
- Humour is almost impossible to translate. Jokes don’t work if the audience doesn’t have the required cultural (and sub-cultural) knowledge to understand them.
- Never trust google translate.
- (Bonus point) Kanji is torture. In the thirteen-weeks of study, we had to learn the basics of hiragana, katakana, and kanji (and Japanese grammar). I barely managed the first two, and I gave up when kanji appeared on the teacher’s whiteboard.
For AI and translations. With the current AI systems, the effectiveness depends on the languages being translated. In a separate Uni degree (TESOL), I discovered that Japanese is ranked as one of the world’s most difficult languages to learn and to retain a first-language proficiency (N1 or N2) with. Also, Japaneses seems to rely on passive voice for sentence structure, while English prefers active voice. So, for now, I expect even AI to lose a few things in translation.* But with most European languages, for example, the AI we (the general public) have now is fine for tourism or some business use cases.
*Always remember, any AI software you use now is the dumbest it will ever be. During my roaming around Twitter / X I have encountered a few AI image enthusiasts. At first glance I can’t spot any differences between their AI images (made with Flux Pro 1.1) and a normal digital or film photo without zooming in…and there’s more advanced software due next year…
