That’s the same cover they’re selling on the main Amazon site, so I guess there’s no American cover anymore. ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯
As for me, I love covers that are artsy, abstract, have pretty colors or pretty people on them. And an honorable mention goes out to Neil Gaiman’s entire watercolor editions. (ღ˘ᴗ˘ღ)

That scares me greatly so…
Japanese book covers are so boring compared to English books. I’m not talking about manga. Also, Japan has soft cover books and hard cover books, but, unlike English books, you can rarely find a book that has both a soft cover and hard cover version. Rarely. Maybe super popular ones get that treatment, but I rarely see it.
Books that choose to have hard covers usually have a little bit more effort in the front cover art. The soft cover ones can be boring at least compared to English books.
These are some soft cover books I’ve read. The second one is “If Cats Disappeared From the World” which somehow became popular overseas, too.
As you can see, most of the soft cover novels have very simple graphics or art, often photos of real places or animals or objects, with some rare ones using manga-type art, but that’s a really recent thing like in the last five years (compared to English books, Japanese book cover art for novels is almost non-existent to be honest). Most use very, very minimal art and they don’t have a lot of fancy font or typography in Japanese anyway, so it all looks quite same-y.
Japanese font variation…it’s so boring in my opinion It’s like comparing Arial with Arial Narrow and Arial Black and Arial Medium… so little difference between them. I think someone needs to come up with more fonts.
So, those were the soft covers. The hard covers on the other hand can have some interesting art (but not font).
This is one of my favorite books called Penguin Highway. Sure, nice art, but since Japan doesn’t usually display books with the cover showing, it was really the title that drew me in.
There can be hard covers that have fancy art though, similar to English books. Idk any because I don’t read hard covers. Hard covers are often high fantasy or epic fantasy and…well, I don’t read Japanese fantasy books. If I am going to read Japanese fantasy books, I’d rather read manga.
Anyway, I’m jealous how English bookstores look with all the pretty covers
Your books are lovely! Just very subtle. American covers seem so loud and multicolored in comparison, they’re glaring sometimes. But subtle covers can sometimes stand out more when they’re surrounded by garish covers, so I appreciate them. Like these:
Actually I meant Western covers, not American covers, since I usually never know which covers are the US version or UK version. ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯
Q1 Not the prettiest, but one that drew me in… The Silmarillion. Plain Matt Black with glossy Runes across the top and bottom, and a Single Silmaril Jewel in the center filled with both the light, and flowers of the Two Trees of Valinor. Simple but effective to me.
Q2 Star Wars Fanfic books… For some reason they all look pretentious to me… I’m a huge SW fan, and I’m sure there are some great tales within those covers, but they just don’t seem to be able to sell it to me,

If they stand out, yes, but what if the only covers that exist are all the simple type?
In Japan, the fancy smancy ones stand out
I do like the simple English book covers though. You know, they really do well with font. It really is the font together with the art. Japanese doesn’t have good font choices
Cursive Japanese would be like like your Doctor’s Handwriting…
lol. A doctor’s handwriting can sometimes be such a mystery.
I am still in disbelief on Russian cursive, because that is just unreal to me.
I witnessed it on YouTube and that seems like a MAJOR migraine to do.
Not sure. I’ve never thought about it. Not sure what country the books I read are from.
I can now see why you like the covers in Japan
I like the fancy covers, you like the simple ones…maybe we need to switch countries
@Akje If you move to Japan, you can finally eat all of the canned bread you could ever want!
Oooh, canned bread should go with my canned unicorn very nicely, and probably tastes better. (>‿◠)
in the deep south and I know at least 1 person who can’t buy a romance with a hot man on the cover because it ruins the experience for her, so I know there are preferences out there.
dafuq horns got to do with mushrooms
It’s minimalism at work.
Trumpet mushrooms?
