Ask me about Japan and Japanese people [for fun, curiosity, or research]

It’s far but it’s doable  Closer to where I’m living now than where I was last year.

What;s the big deal with bubble tea?

I wish I knew

I think it comes from Japan’s Korea obsession although I’m not sure.

It’s a Tawainese thing. I think it’s tasty, but I don’t like the tapioca bubbles as much. Also they use these root vegetables to make them.

I think it’s a tasty treat.

Why is it so big in Japan and Korea then? I was asking from that point of view :flushed:

Why is tea so popular in Japan?
It’s a good alternative to iced coffee.

Personally, I’ve never liked bubble tea  I’d rather have regular milk tea.

I looked around on the Japanese side of Google and it turns out these are some of the reasons it was popular:

  1. Many young people were drinking Starbucks’ frappuchinos and were getting tired of it…so it was a natural jump to the next interesting and new thing.

  2. Many of the flavors were similar to Japanese sweets and Japanese tea and so many Japanese could easily hop on and fall in love with it.

  3. It’s not something that old guys and suits would fall in love with and take over on Instagram and TikTok, so it became a “teen’s drink” and a “girl’s drink” and stayed that way. Not a popular guy’s drink.

  4. It looks good on Instagram and Tiktok.

  5. You can customize it and this attracted many young people. There was apparently a tapioca cafe where you could customize the drink and it was the most popular place for the girls.

  6. It’s a fairly good price for young people and for that price young people felt they could have a good filling drink and feel satisfied.

The “young people” are mainly high school or university students. Mainly girls.
