Characters

Does anyone else need characters first before they can begin writing anything? Like I don’t need to plot. I’m more of a panster, but without characters I cannot start anything. That’s the extent of my planning though.

I need everything before I start writing :joy:

I usually start with a basic idea of the plot and somewhat fleshed out characters.

I can pants pretty much everything else. With some major plot points noted. But characters I need before I can start writing.

I’m starting a new WIP and need the characters :joy: Though on the plus side the characters are helping flesh out this story a bit.

Nope! The situation determines the characters for me. I mean, I start out with a generic guy or girl and know absolutely nothing about them at first, but as the story goes on they start defining themselves based on what would be the worst kind of character for having to deal with this particular situation they’re in. I’m a planner/plantser. __〆(..)

Normally when I am fleshing out a story, I start brainstorming with a singular character and then let there backstory take control

Often, just thinking about the characters is enough to get me to start a WIP lol. Consistent characterization is one of the strong points of my writing - I think.

Like—what happened for the one I’m planning for November is I took an African goddess (Oya, the character) and built everything from her

Yeah so BBCode is basically HTML but simpler.

I love characterization. <3 It’s my favorite part of writing.

@Signing_Echo That’s what I normally do. My current WIP was built off of an idea, but I still need characters to help write this idea.

I come up with an idea, it takes the shape of a species or object, I give it a name, and then it slowly gains an appearance.

Then, the character lives inside my head until fully complete, and then comes puppetmaster time.

The process can take weeks or months depending on the character’s specifics.
