It has been forever! But onward to more questions and answers! ![]()
I’m addressing your entire summary here, but quoting this particular piece.
Summary
I grew up in a Christian household but after leaving church and being exposed to movies/games/other forms of entertainment that cover either fictional or real cases of demons, I’m convinced a lot of what deities do, whether evil or not, is just purely “because they feel like it.” The Greek Gods were depicted like this a lot. Humans were a dime a dozen. For amusement. Lovers. To enact wrath. There was a system in place as far as the humans being born, how their souls get to the underworld etc. and for some reason, the Gods obeyed this system for the most part.
I don’t think angels or demons need humans. I think we might be used. They say demons “feed” off of negative energy so while humans are “weaker” perhaps they still need a source. Or we’re just “part of the job” and they have a quote of souls to bring to the boss or something. ![]()
As for God, I always found it interesting how He was presented in the bible as all loving, all knowing, perfect, but then he’s also “a jealous God”, hence why you should not worship anything or anyone other than Him. That kind of contradicts itself, doesn’t it? How can one be perfect, but also be selfish and jealous? If humans are flawed and imperfect because of those same emotions, then wouldn’t the same apply to said God. (This is why I left church haha, so many questions!)
Have you ever played Wukong? There’s a lot of Chinese mythology/lore in there about their versions of Gods and demons. I think the Eastern versions might be closer to reality, but of course we’ll never know. That Gods and Devils are just as “grey” as humans, they just happen to be more powerful than us and have this system in place for us humans for who knows what. I used to imagine God watching us all like we were on a TV. Just flipping through the channels. Maybe we are just court jesters. ![]()
I also find it odd that there are real documented cases of the bible, crosses, holy water etc. affecting people who are possessed but how can just the Christian version affect these things? Sometimes I think it’s more the faith that provides the power and protection, not the religion itself. Just like fear attracts evil, faith and perseverance probably attracts the good energy that makes evil beings be like, eww, don’t like. I think it’s the emotions that “give” us power.
I’d like to think that every now and then a special human is born and for some reason, it’s in their best interest, whether angels or demons, to protect that human. Who knows? Maybe these humans are like our version of “Hercules” and they must serve some divine purpose so those forces get involved to protect them.
Ooh, this is interesting! I’ve always felt like this might be how it actually works. There are different deities (or maybe the same, just their names change over the generations or across cultures) and there’s some kind of hierarchy in place. Some will naturally be more powerful than others.
Is it hard to come up with the rules because you’re writing about Western and Eastern demons? Are they humans that became demons, born from something like a catastrophe, or created?
Makes me wonder what Tov did that would piss off both sides of the fence. What’d Tov do? What kind of taboo would make him an outcast to both Angels and Demons? Does it involve humans?
Okay, and responding to your reactions to my characters…
I discovered recently that other cultures are like that too, not just Russians. So for some reason, Westerners are particularly smiley for no friggin reason lol. Other cultures consider it ungenuine. Shady even. Which honestly, I agree with. Why the hell are we smiling all the time? ![]()
Yep, he takes ‘em off when he doesn’t want to mess them up, like while bathing. Doesn’t matter which arm, but sometimes wearing specific ones as a set “combine” effects. Kind of like how Asian languages have characters that mean something on their own but when combined with other characters, their meaning changes. In the case of the matching set he gets for him and Rose, they’re “succession wards.” Time to be sad. Spoilers from my first messy draft.
Summary
“They’re an inheritance.” Jax avoids her eyes. “When one half is threatened, the other answers. And,” Jax clears his throat as he brushes against the charms. “The water droplet is the Goddess. Protection. The um, this bronze lookin’ sun thing, it’s only on his. It means,” he clears his throat again. “He’s also a giver of protection. And the, this knot.”
Jax chokes. Stares at their feet. A few drops of water land on her filthy boots.
“The knot is infinity. Of spirit. To use his strength to carry on after he’s—”
Panic seizes her chest. Heartbeat in her ears. A sob strangles her. She tries to desperately pull away, but her strength is non-existent, and Jax doesn’t let go of her wrists.
“The red thread on his symbolizes his life force. And the silver thread on yours links to the Goddess, waiting to receive.”
“Jax,” she sobs. “Please.”
“Succession wards,” he continues, louder, desperate, robotic even. “If the giver dies—”
“Jax!”
“—their half is passed to the receiver. Their strength to sustain you, and their protection until someone else takes their place.”
Honestly? Haven’t put much thought into that haha. Theodore is on good terms with his mom, but she’s a boy mom, so you know she’s stern when she needs to be. She’s “softer” on him than his father, but she understands her son’s role as the eldest and the heir.
If they’re not sparring, probably hanging out on the boardwalk where the shops are or laying around at home because outside of the mob stuff, they run a construction company. And they’re actively involved in it, not just some guys in suits that tell people what to do. They’re physically working on site too. So you can imagine they appreciate the moments when they can knock back a few beers, have a hot meal, and knock out.
Jax tends to check on his mom a lot who runs a cafe. Theodore is a bit of a gym rat.
Nope. I think Theo’s mom was relieved if anything. His father was okay with it. Could’ve been a good merge to have, but at the same time, I don’t think Duke sees the connection between families as off the board just because Rose rejected the marriage. Duke raised his son to be respectful and so if he didn’t vibe with Rose despite that, it is what it is. Theo and Rose continue being civil and “professional” until of course, things shift. ![]()
Maybe in the next novel, maybe. Assuming I ever write said novel. I have a few scenes and an overactive imagination haha.
Summary
There are a few different kinds of people in this circle of friends. One friend she’s known since high school, and she’s the governor’s daughter. Basically the governor and Rose’s father are in cahoots business-wise so this friend is aware of that connection. If anything, she kind of treats Rose like her personal VIP card or “You scratch my back, I scratch yours,” kind of things. She’s not really a good friend, but she has her moments that are helpful to Rose. Two other friends are part of Rose’s auto racing club. One is bolder and louder than the other, but those two are high school friends with each other and bonded with Rose over their mutual love of racing. They understand boundaries so they worry about Rose, or try to be vague with their advice, but don’t pry too much because Rose tends to pull away when they do. Rose thinks she’s protecting them, but she’s just isolating herself. And they’re capable women, they don’t really need her protection.
What do you mean by “temporarily”? Like she overwrites bad thoughts and dreams in her own head but then it wears off over time? Tell me more about Rose. Is she in the same story as Tov or different story? What’s her role?
