Hello.
Writing is like riding a bike, though. You’ve still got it! You’ve just had other things on your mind lately with rehab. It’ll take time to ease back into it. Have you read any good books lately? Sometimes reading my favorite writers gets me back into writing mode. ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯
I honestly haven’t read a lot of fantasy lately. I’ve been on a sociology kick as of late. Any books you recommend? I do need to read more YA fantasy if only to know what’s out there these days
Oh hello! I’m a sociologist. What were you looking at?
Alas, the only fantasy I’ve read lately is Howl’s Moving Castle, and I suspect that’s more like middle grade, actually.
But the books I keep hearing about are:
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass
Faebound by Saara El-Arifi
Quicksilver by Callie Hart
And of course, Hunger Games, Mortal Instruments, and Shatter Me are still relevant.
So this might be a bit random, but have you ever played BOTW?
I just finished Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism! Very good!
BOTW? I don’t know what that is, I think.
You’re right about that. I just need to get back into the groove. It might take a while. I think I just reacted negatively because I was worried I lost my ability to write since it’s been so long. But I’m sure I can get back into it eventually yknow?
TIL Howl’s Moving Castle is a book
allow me to put my library tech degree to use…
off the top of my head,
Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes (YA high fantasy)
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige (YA portal fantasy based on the Wizard of Oz)
House of Salt and Sorrow by Erin A. Craig (YA high fantasy based on a spookified 12 Princesses)
I can give you better recommendations if you can tell me more about what you like/what the last fantasy book you really enjoyed was/what subgenres or tropes you’re interested in reading. Stuff like that.
Thanks! I don’t know if this helps but I’d love something with a similar vibe to the league of legends: Arcane show. But a book.
Six of Crows has similar vibes. It’s not steampunk but it has the found family (featuring traumatized underdog characters), undercity, gangs/heist plot vibes.
The Mortal Instruments series by Philip Reeve is steampunk, though there’s much less fighting/underdog stuff. It’s also middle grade rather than YA, but it’s on the older end.
Was there anything in particular you really liked about Arcane?
Are you open to reading Shoujo Manga?
The complexity of the characters, the moral aspect, the way nothing was truly black and white, the high stakes, the action, the relationships, that kinda stuff!
I am not necessarily against it but I mainly read seinen manga.
I am just asking because you wanted to get back into YA fantasy, and Shoujo overlaps with it a lot.
Huh. I’ve always found shojo way more focused on romance than fantasy.
You could argue that modern YA is also heavily romance focused. Mostly I recommend Magic Knight Rayearth and Cardcaptor Sakura.
I mean I’m not here to debate about what constitutes as YA fantasy. But I prefer my romance at a minimum.
