Where I’m at is I’ve not shut down my page, but I don’t need them to keep track. It was just convenient. So I’m keeping track of myself and not using the site. Things may change in a few years, or not, and so I’ll be watching to see how they flounder further.
I think I’m going to sit this one out too. I’ve seen some people on YouTube who are doing their own challenges and inviting others to post their word counts in the comments. I’ll probably keep score on my computer and not post it anywhere. And this means we can choose our own goals! Maybe I’ll just do 30k words, since 50k is too much pressure. * ponders *
I’m also sitting this year out - the first time in pfffft ever since I started in 2011. It makes me super sad because NaNo has got me through the worst times, times when it’s been the only time of year I’ve written. It helped me through bouts of depression many times.
But I can’t be associated with them anymore. I for some reason can’t bring myself to delete my account. I think I’m just going to let the account go stale.
But I’m not doing it. I’m instead doing Dreamland’s own version (DL community on Wattpad) and I’ve set myself a target of 75k. Whether I hit that or not is another thing, so far so slow this month lmao.
But yeah, NaNo have… really really disappointed me with their crap. It’s so sad
I have a major FOMO and hate to break my winning streak but I’m going to sit this nano out. Not really because of what nano org has done (though they’re certainly talented at nailing their own coffin), but for personal reasons. It’s just not a good time to push for ambitious goals. I’ll slowly chug along as I normally do.
As for AI, I have very mixed feelings about it. I think people are making way too much hype over it. And I also think that whoever thinks that we can get rid of gen AI is in major denial. It’s not going anywhere. We’re only going to see more of it, whether we want to or not (recently a presentation my coworker made had a ton of cringey AI images in it and I could hardly focus on the topic of discussion. Can’t escape it even at work.)
I wish that the laws, etc, would get a move on and make some rules around it since it’s a major free for all right now. Corporations are making money while artists are not. There is a right way to use this technology but corporations won’t voluntarily share their profits. They need to be made to do so by the lawmakers, who are taking their sweet time with taking action.
No clue why nano decided to take such an extreme stance on the AI topic. I think it was required by one of the sponsors but why they wanted it so badly makes no sense. The forums don’t exist anymore which means that the site is again only used to track a nano goal so why would AI use matter? In any case, I don’t have strong feelings about it. They can’t surprise me anymore after the drama last year.
