Pick a character from your story [Prompt 14: They are so powerful, they think]

Prompt 13: Annoying but loveable

Tell me about that annoying but loveable character. What makes them annoying and why do you or other characters can’t help but love them still? They’re annoying but forgiven. Why?

Between Roses’ side character Quartz is annoying because when he’s with a bunch of people he does not talk straight at all. Words come out in whatever order they please and it’s such a headache to understand him.

But the thing is, sometimes that brings out funny mistakes and he’s not a mean person or doing it on purpose. He gets nervous when there’s a bunch of people around him. One-on-one conversations, he’s completely fine.

Besides, he’s a good warrior, loyal to his captain, and is running after his crush who doesn’t pay any attention to him at first.

I would say he’s the annoying but loveable type  Oh Quartz, you silly thing XD

Krista, because she’s Krista. Karen’s mercenaries, from Karen’s perspective. And Karen, from her mercenaries’ perspective.

Karen’s mercenaries like to do their own thing during and between missions, they have little regard for niceties, formalities, or diplomacy (even less than the average Israeli), and they have a persistent habit of parking their helicopter gunships on the manicured lawns of Karen’s estate. Also, about half of Karen’s backyard has been converted into the mercenaries’ obstacle courses and their weapons practice ranges. R.I.P. / Z"L the villa’s property value. But at least the bedrooms are sound-proof, and there are no rodents in Karen’s gardens. Who knew .300 Winchester Magnum could be such effective pest / bug spray?

For her part, Karen has a long-standing habit of doting on her mercenaries and always over-paying them, to where it goes beyond embarrassing. The mercenaries’ solution is to invest their excessive paychecks in fine art and literature, turning Karen’s fortress-villa into one of the largest private galleries / libraries in Mediterranean region. Karen also takes unnecessary, at times near-lethal, risks to protect her mercenaries from any perceived threats…Once a romantic, always a romantic…

TL;DR, Karen and her mercs are a highly dysfunctional, contradictory, and equally protective family.

Kitten and Twitch from another one of my fanfics (that’s kind of a fanfic of a mix of games/books).

They were born on the same day, and live next door to each other. They have a few of the same interests, and they end competing against each other in the semi finals of a competition, but they agreed before the competition started (which was also before they got together) that they wouldn’t let that come between them, and there’s no hard feelings, even when Kitten wins.

Near the end of the story, there’s a battle and Kitten gets knocked out by a spell while defending Twitch. The other characters don’t realize she’s only unconcious and are upset thinking she died. All of them are, but Twitch especially. So when they see her after she regains conciousness all of them are extremely relieved, and after the battle finishes Twitch hugs her.

Harper from the dog story that has Daisy in it. She can get really excited and when that happens, she talks a lot. Often she doesn’t give others a chance to get a word in, just because of how excited she is. This annoys the other characters, but they still love her because they know she just can’t help her excitement. Also, despite the annoyance they also find the excitement kind of endearing.

Hmm…

Asherina Newt is this to her cousin Stephanie Thornwood. Yet Stephanie is the same to Asherina. They are royal cousins from the Thornwood Dynasty. They bicker like siblings and even get into physical spat, but they love each other dearly and would stand by each other. They annoyed each other every time they see each other but, they truly do care, since Stephanie’s real siblings are so distant from her and all of that.

I get that

That actually sounds quite beautiful  Is there a cohesive theme or is there a jumble of themes because of everyone’s likes and dislikes?

Especially annoying when they bring out the old “it’s complicated”

I actually poke at “it’s complicated” in one of my projects. A character says it, and the MC says, "Don’t you ‘it’s complicated’ on me  "

Reminds me of a character. There’s this comic artist…the name slipped, but the comic title is Pixie and Brutus and there’s this Labrador Retriever character, Lola, who is like that. She gets excited and talks so much without letting anyone get a word in and she’s kind of annoying, and at first I didn’t really like her, but I came around and now I can’t help but like her

That sounds sweet  I think sibling or sibling-like characters that bicker a lot but still deeply care about each other have really close bond. It’s because their bond is so close, they’re able to be real with each other.

It’s a mix of the mercenaries’ different cultures, and any cultures the mercenaries happen to be interested in. For example, the New Zealand comic series of Footrot Flats makes an appearance in Karen’s library, in the fourth chapter. Oh, and Krista is a self-taught Classical / Romantic era violinist, but she stopped playing two years before the story begins.

Best way to avoid that :joy:

What about character to character? Is there a character who is annoying in a lovable way?

If that makes sense?

Most of my main characters annoy each other to an extent because they’re either related or live together, but they’re not really “annoying”

Leander is conflicted when it comes to his self-image. The world thinks he’s a monster, his people think he’s a hero, and he honestly doesn’t care if he’s either. In his youth he had witnessed the brutal murder of his family and was tortured, disfigured and left for dead. And at that point he had taken on a very harsh concept of justice and some very questionable morals. He would punish anyone who tried taking from him, his land, or his people. Which, in theory didn’t make him a bad guy. People killed for less in those lands, and the eye for an eye mentality was far from new. He just had a habit of taking it too far, and liking the chaos he causes a little too much. He liked to prove a point, much like those men did to him.
Then of course, there was the necromancy and blood magic. Which, recycling is apparently cool until it involves people’s dead friends and family. Leander is the first to advocate for departed souls and the treatment of the undead. But undeath is still a pretty taboo topic to the average person. He’d like to think that may be the one area he’d consider himself as being good in. Either way Leander just does what Leander wants to do. For good or evil.

I have a few but I think my favorite would be Laura and Reign. He’s a grumpy goth vampire with daddy issues. He’s secretly a giant softy. She’s a mortician’s daughter, who loves vampires, horror movies and is terrified of death. She’s his ray of hippie goth sunshine but is also secretly…not so secretly feisty as hell.
He’s kind of a weirdo she could see herself being with for literally forever. She’ll hold him and listen to Bauhaus when he’s depressed then kick his butt if he’s still moping about it later. And he’ll let her dress him up like Dracula and read Bram Stoker in his Transylvanian accent because she begged him to for the millionth time.
they’re a mix of soft grumpy and feisty sunshine vibe mixed with two weirdos finding someone to match their energy. They’re just so wholesome and sweet.

Prompt 14: Tell me what they think makes them so powerful. Not what you think makes them powerful. What THEY think.

Richard thinks what makes him so powerful is his command over his demon and his growing vampiric abilities. He also thinks he’s so powerful because he can manipulate anyone. There’s no one he can’t fool in his mind.
