Don’t approach it as a series unless you plan for it to be no more than a trilogy. Focus book by book. Even if you do plan to approach it as a series, make sure to divide it into book-sized chunks. The overall process will actually depend on the overall number of books.
- Are all the books going to be part of the same storyline or are they different stories with the same characters?
- Once you know the answer to the above, then you can go about it in a few ways:
- If it is the same story line, split it into chunks. Reasonably speaking, there should be natural splitting points (e.g., for my first two books, the spit was the end of the first major battle)
- If it’s different stories with the same characters, figure out what the stories you want to tell are (even if it’s just a generic idea; it doesn’t have to be a full plotline) then put them in the order that makes sense. Chronological is the default for this
- Once you know the answer to the above, you can then start worrying about details and specifics. It’s easier to get those down once you know what your series structure and general storylines will be
