Yup. Typical algebra problems we solved were like “Random is x years old, his father is 20 years older and in ten years will be twice his age. Find their ages.”
Yeah, we had all of that in my old school. In this school they compile all of these into one and just call it math, but I guess the material is relatively similar… Although in my old school it was more advanced. I miss it there.
gasp Whattt!! How could you not like biology?! That’s my favourite ![]()
Oh yes, us too. We also started learning the cartesian plane and graphs in grade 3. We followed the Singaporean system of math, so yeah… Apparently that’s like the most advanced or something.
Ah, same here. Except for us it wasn’t just Singaporean math, but also Singaporean English and Singaporean science.
Ah, that’s interesting. I think for the rest of the subjects we followed the American curriculum. Do you think it’s much different for these courses, too?
Um, I think so. So for both primary and secondary school, we followed mainly the British-Singaporean curriculum (even more for my high school since it’s actually a branch of a school in Singapore).
I don’t know what you learn in science for the American curriculum, but what I remember was that we got to human reproduction starting fourth grade and went into more detail in fifth and sixth grade. We also learned chromatography, how to use a microscope, exothermic and endothermic reactions, acids and alkalis, and the parts of different types of cells.
For English I remember we focused on composition and grammar. We learned all 16 tenses in fifth grade, had been practicing reading and writing fiction and non-fiction since first grade, and were heavily graded on punctuation (we learned how to punctuate dialogue starting second or third grade, I think? We had a whole section in our benchmark exam just for punctuating sentences)
Maybe it’s different for the American curriculum
we had those too
ooh! we did that too
Oh, hmm. I think we did human reproduction in grade 5. Something like that. Oooh, you did chromatography that early? Yeah, I feel like there are probably some differences then. We learned the other things on your list in grade 6 though.
Oh wow. I don’t think our curriculum focused this much on punctuation, but we did focus on grammar a lot. Honestly, I don’t remember much of the actual process of learning these things.
It was integrated enough that it became sort of natural. I don’t know. At least it was for me. Can’t speak for the others. I’ve observed some rather… questionable techniques… from some of them, ahem.
