The thing that triggered the thought was the kerfuffle between Isis and Horus.
One time Set and Horus were fighting, and Isis attempts to harpoon Set to help her son win the fight, but accidentally harpoons Horus instead. Horus, in a perfectly logical response to that, cuts off her head – his own mother’s head. Thoth replaces her head with that of a cow.
In one article I read, this caused the other gods to grow wary of Horus, and they thought he shouldn’t be Pharoah. So that’s extra funny, because the gods went: “dude… what the hell?”
innnnteresting, I hadn’t heard that one so I looked it up. The thing that stands out to me the most is the cow head, because that symbology belongs to Hathor, however, Isis was frequently depicted with Hathor’s symbols which suggests there was some conflation between the two and this detail in this Horus-Isis myth may have been a way for the Egyptians to explain why Isis is sometimes shown with Hathor’s cow horns and sun disc.
There would also have been the understanding that the gods can’t die so while Horus beheading his mother seems extreme, it wouldn’t have (and didn’t) actually harm her. Also considering Isis’ role as a very loving mother, wife, and skilled healer, it would have been out-of-character for this to spawn retaliation from her. So imo that’s more evidence that the Egyptians just needed a way to explain why sometimes they were painting Isis with Hathor’s cow head, and they snuck it into this myth about Horus ascending the throne.
You sometimes look at mythology and wonder ‘why didn’t X god do anything?’ The answer is that it’s a story used to explain an actual event. Why does Persephone keep flip-flopping between Hades and Demeter? Because that’s how seasons work. Why is Zeus so horny? Either to explain why so many heroes reference this one guy, and because kings abuse their power.
Also that reminds me that Zeus’s Roman name is Jupiter, which literally means Djeus-Pitr, and the Vedic Sky God is named Dyaus, and that’s also the root of the word Deus (Latin word for God). People still worship Zeus, he just goes by a different username now.
No, well, yes in the sense that Zeus-Jupiter is still worshiped in pagan circles but no in the sense that he’s related in any way to the Abrahamic God. The original language of Judaism and Christianity is Hebrew in which the name of God is Elohim, which practicing Jews then sub out for Adonai/HaShem/YHWH. Elohim translates roughly to Godhead now, and would have been translated as Deus in Latin when Christianity was adopted as the state religion of the Roman Empire, since that would have been the closest literal translation.
I do remember reading (in Dan Brown’s Origin) about how the image of Zeus was improvised for God, which is why God is depicted as an old man with a white beard sitting on a cloud, and before that the Christian God didn’t have a face, and I guess Christianity was more like Islam.
I’m 100% sure that’s the case because I just took a class on it you’re right! that’s why they sub in Adonai (my Lord), HaShem (the name), or YHWH (Yahweh)
I’ve never met Jehovah’s Witnesses though. I’ve only ever seen them in movies and memes. They apparently wear white shirts with black ties, travel in groups of two, are pale with short brown hair, and they go door to door in the USA saying “do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ”.
They’re pretty common here in the UK. We used to get a lot of the Jehovah’s Witnesses at our house, but I don’t get too many anymore (maybe one every few years). Still get given a lot of business cards and pamphlets in certain places, though
I’m not sure if it’s the same thing as a jehova’s whitness, but here in Ireland (or at least Dublin) the Christian recruiters scream across the entire city center their mic’s and speakers would make a heavy metal concert jealous
Oh, and don’t get me started on the ads. In every bus, train, station, tram, there’s ALWAYS a poster saying something like “if you follow Jesus you will go to heaven” or smth
Oh, and the worst part is that the number it says to text for the free bible course they’re advertising and the emergency number for accidents on the train is the same gods, imagine not noticing and texing “BIBLE” to emergency services
