Just wondering if people with 5M views feel they can walk away having achieved success and never write again?
A few people I know have achieved between 1M to 10M views, and most I know having achieved this success stopped writing (mostly for RL reasons).
It made me think if they felt they had gained enough success to feel they could walk away and dedicate their passion to something else when they don’t need to meet demands and pressures.
I guess that’s why I still write. Until I reach 1M views, I feel I haven’t achieved enough to call a great success.

I say the above and get something to take me out of my salty grumpy pants. I discovered a comment left on one of my completed works that made me want to keep writing for 100 years. I captured the trophy comment to my twitter to treasure the moment.

I think it depends on why they write in the first place.
I know some people write just to gain traction, to validate their values through how many views they get. Some write for living, who typically will keep writing to keep earning money. Some write because they love writing, less about getting attention or money.
Not gonna lie, I’m probably a bit of everything, but instead of looking for validation, I’m more into looking for my target audience because they’re the ones who pay for my work. One of my books almost hits 2M views, and it also reached almost 300k views on Radish in 3 months before I took it down, but I don’t find it as enough reason to stop writing. I still write stories on Wattpad for free while I don’t have to, because I just love writing.
But again, that’s just me

I don’t think I ever would even get 500K, but for me getting reads will only make me write more and harder, because I want so badly to be heard.

I swear, hardly anything feels better than getting fun inline comments on Wattpad. Though I would still write regardless of whether I get any reader interaction or not, comments can be very motivating

Oh, and speaking of writing, I’ve managed to get some progress on writing Chapter XIX of BWT… by cutting out some words again I’ll finish the chapter by the end of this week, I promise not
And sort of related to writing, but I’ve managed to create more copyright banners for my other stories. I didn’t create the covers for all of my books so I had to play around with fonts and figure out which ones matched the cover more, but safe to say I think I did an okay job with these. Here they are for comparison.
So these first two covers, I made myself. Yeah, they’re not the most eye-catching but I’ve settled for these

Speaking of which, there’s one cover that I still need to do. It’s a vector cover with four people on it and it’s so damn hard, I haven’t finished vectorizing all the characters on the cover yet

I’m like nowhere even 100k on any of my stories on Wattpad, the most I have is 48k (a sample that’s now trad. published) and the next best is 43k.
I don’t view my writing career a success because I reach a milestone on Wattpad. My writing career, to me, is a success because I’ve reached my lifelong goal of being traditionally published.
I’d absolutely love to write full time to pay the bills, be a success like idk Rowling or Martin etc, but the moment I walked into my first day of writing at university as a degree, they thwarted that dream for all of us and told us what it’s really like.
For me, this year has been a success; I’ve had a book come out that idk how well it’s doing right now, but it’s never, ever going to be a best seller and thats okay. It’s a foot in the door.
I’ve joined the Creator’s program on Wattpad - because thats where my audience is partially at and I got invited because of my both hard work and skill (last bit arguable but I think I have some skill anyway)
I’m accepted on Radish and seem to be doing okay with it. Views to me matter because thats how I get my name out there, but I will never walk away just because I react 100k, 1m or whatever.
All in all, for me, that’s success. BUT I will never walk away from writing. To me, writing is my passion ,it’s something I need to do. Some people say obsession, but as I’m currently off work sick, it’s my “job”. It’s what I love doing
You will get people who just do it for the money or views or whatever. Cool, thats for them to make decisions over, but for me, I will never, ever understand just going through the motions. The moment writing becomes a chore or a means to an end, I’m done. I’d rather write for life with no money in it and love what I do than the opposite. I could think of nothing worse than a cage.

I think it might be more depressing than that 5m reads, the way these websites count them, is based upon opening a chapter.
Chapter averages for novels is actually 12 chapters. Wattpad tends to encourage smaller chapters, but let’s go with 20, for the purpose of this breakdown.

Let’s be generous and say that only 10% put down your book after the first impression (down to 4.5 m), and from there you’ve got 3-to-1 chance of finishing the novel because those big numbers come from somewhere…of that 1, let’s go with getting through the first 3rd (6 chapters), midpoint (10 chapters), and this could have ended 5 chapters ago (15 chapters). The 6 chapter quitter would not put it down at all, midpoint would put it down once about 50% of the time, near-ender would put it down twice, about 50 of the time. 2/3 would quit early, 2/3 of 1/3 would be the next quit stage, leaving a small fraction for those who almost finish. Very sparing estimate, here.
So going with 100 quitters to just get the ratio number fixed, ((66.6 people * 6 chapters)+ (22.2 people * (10 chapters + 0.5 restarts))+((100-66.6-22.2 people) * (15 chapters + 1 restart)))/100= (399.6+233.1+179.2)/100=8.119
So, at this point, 5 million reads drops down to 4.5 million meaningful reads, and the weighted change still has 3 readers to 1 for completion, but the 1 is now replaced with 8.119 counted reads.
So, now to mess with the 3
10% are reading it from the start. That means that most often, when they open it, it’s stuck on the previous chapter, and they then move to the new chapter. Let’s go with 60%, low-ball it. 50% will notice it 2/3 written, and the reminder chapter s will do the same as the 10. The remaining 40% are going to put it down twice, on average, as they start once it’s complete. Going with 100 people again, ((10 people*(20+(60%of 19)))+ (50 people (13.5+6.5+(60% of 5.5)))+(40 people(20+2))/100=(314+1,165+880=23.59
But this is 3 reads to 1, so, *3=70.77
So 70.77+8.119=78.889
4.5 mil/78.889 is 57,042 readers have read at least 6 chapters, if I’m being rediculously generous.
With that number of free reads, how many will go buy the book? I don’t know. I think you’d be lucky to get 10% of finished readers to buy.

But I do know that this is showing that writing isn’t financially fantastic for most writers. If you can at most expect $500 a year off a finished book (when you are “successful”), and some books won’t keep that longevity up, it’s not hard to see why some successful writers barely break even.
But it also shows me that some “scam companies” that pay you $400 for a book that you’re not certain is going to do a damn thing may actually not be near as crappy as I thought before looking at this. It would take some skill and deviousness to really think through, but it may be worth “taking a hit” to get your name out there…as long as it’s only 1 book.
