Sounds cool
How futuristic or not do you think you’ll make it?
![]()
Why? How did it happen? What’s going on over there?
Space travel is a given, along with advanced ai/robots and even universal internet.
Over a millennia ago a Saint died at nation because of that their death screwed with the weather to create endless rain of their blood. Saint’s blood is toxic and deadly to races that can’t survive in such a location. The nation is a Shadowland, but a small percentage of people live there because their race and misting allows it.
Favorites is still very wide so I’ll do 2 I almost never get to talk about
That would be Ignus and Yuliv, the two uninhabitable planets of the United Fae Worlds
Ignus
Ignus is the planet closest to the sun. It’s got lava oceans and an atmosphere no one can survive in. Even protective suits only go so far. There are a few domed cities built by the Ancients with technology that was lost, so there are still Fae living there. Just not a lot of them. But yeah, lava oceans, no surface water (outside the cities), burning winds, intense heat temperatures, constant solar radiation and winds. Mostly flat planetary surface but there are a few stone mountains and crevices. No seasons, just constant heat. No rain because no liquid in the air. It just evaporates immediately. The inhabitants have to dig for water and grow plants in protected areas with moderated seasons, but it still has to work with hot temperatures. Firestorms are a thing and you do NOT want to be caught outside in one of those. No suit will keep you safe. Nice red sunsets tho.
Yuliv
Yuliv is the second last planet from the sun but the coldest one. Also uninhabitable but for different reasons to Ignus. Yuliv doesn’t have an atmosphere so is constantly well below freezing and unprotected from solar radiation. It also has domed cities but, unlike Ignus, you can survive outside in a protective suit for a few days. There are ancient ruins across the planet because it used to be inhabitable a veeeeeerrrrrryyyyyy long time ago. The oceans are all frozen but there’s no weather because, again, no atmosphere. The part that’s the least frozen depends on which part is facing the sun. The people who live in the domed cities have to drill for heat and have to grow their own plants in protected areas. There are underground oceans but those can be tricky to reach. Again, not many people live here, mainly because of the cold but also because of the near-eternal night. Solar storms are rather unfriendly and the quakes are usually massive.
Yah, those two really don’t come up a lot but they do still show up. Writing worlds without seasons is a bit odd but they are a thing so yah ![]()
I got one in one of my worlds. It’s called the WAVE lol
I think I even came up with what the acronym stands for. I forgot now though.
Do you have a name for your universal internet yet?
Angel Falls is a border city in Southern California in the desert. It’s in Imperial County and lots of the residents hop across to Mexico daily and back. A lot of Mexicans come to work and go back over. The weather is generally dry, arid and hot. Blue skies, but it occasionally rains (rain is rare but it gets a few occasional inland storms).
Most of the plants are palm trees and cacti. And no, it never gets cold enough to snow, even in the winter usually. It snowed there once in the 1930s, though. People need to watch themselves in the summer sun, though. It can get really hot, up to 120f, which is like 50c. The nights are cooler, though in the 70s/ 20c.
The sunset/sunrises are very nice too
if you want to stay up and catch 'em or just wake up early before work. It’s also in imperial valley, so lots of open desert for photoshoots outside of the city if you want. (I won’t tell you what else does on there, though
)
No but I like your name.
Are you going to add more things to this or no?
All righty, back again
Wanna do this for a few different ones (Aechaghar, Efotora (inspired by Dragon Quest 11), and Uglerune (inspired by Zelda, specifically Echoes of Wisdom)).
Setting
Aechaghar isn’t a world or country or anything itself, it’s the realm of magic. People get there through portals.
Since it’s just the realm of magic, it’s round like the normal world.
It has many landscapes. There’s the area where the magic school is, there’s a forest where the tree people live, an ocean, a snowy field…
Efotora has several different kingdoms and towns. Some of the most prominate are Arcadis (a small town in the mountains), Iluton (the largest kingdom), Mana (a port town), Murkwell (a large town that houses the Gauntlet, a competition that combines wrestling, boxing, and magic), Thornpost (where the main character was born), Circowich (a town known for sightseeing), Vanoch and Vanoch Coral Reef (a seaside town and the mermaid town under it), Coldbell (a snowy town), and Northhall (a forest town). There’s also the Tree of Memory.
Nobody knows the shape of this world.
Landscape depends on location (for example, Iluton is the most populated, with a fancy side and a not-so-fancy side, Murkwell is entirely inside, Vanoch Coral Reef is underwater, and Coldbell is…well, cold, but they have ways to keep it from being unbearable).
Uglerune also has multiple kingdoms (plus a small town, and a town near the volcano). They are Auxodeodo, Fanfoss, The Dry Wilds, Waveless River, Woodleche Ocean, Highmaw, Mount Presmore, The Igloo Forests, and Thurport Polder. There’s also Mountain Lizard Forest, and the Curious Realm.
This world is like a dome almost (round at the top, and flat on the bottom).
Auxodeodo is populated, Fanfoss is a peaceful, quiet town, The Dry Wilds is a desert, Waveless River is, of course, wet, while Woodleche Ocean is underwater. Highmaw is another peaceful town, Mount Presmore is the volcano, The Igloo Forests is a snowy mountain, and Thurport Polder is a swamp.
Culture
Aechaghar has multiple holidays. There’s the Eclipse Festival, the Harvest (essentially a combo of Halloween and Thanksgiving), and The Twinkling Stars (like Christmas). The tree people also have a holiday, called the Planting.
Food in Aechaghar all has some sort of magical component. For the tree people, it correlates to things such as growing, or getting lots of leaves.
Efotora has different traditions. There’s a coming-of-age ceremony in Arcadis, a knighting ceremony in Iluton, competitions in Mana and Murkwell, sightseeing in Circowich, a feast in Vanoch, and Northhall has a tradition where newly born babies are blessed for the Tree’s protection. Northhall strongly believes in the Tree and the main character.
Uglerune doesn’t have as much expanded upon it, although there are a few food and drink items the main character eats or drinks before each battle, and she switches between several clothing items. I also included her taking part in a horse race (there’s a ranch too), and winning a music box that plays a song from another Zelda-inspired story (crossover when-) and a celebration in the epilouge.
Fantasy races
Aechaghar only has Orphic (magic users), Arcano (non-magic users), and the tree people.
Arcano largely are unaware of the magic realm: they’re ordinary people.
Orphic are each born with the ability to do all magic, although some magic comes easier to certain ones than others (for example, some are predominate in fire magic, others in water magic, ect). When in school, they live in dorms during the school year. They eat what the school serves each day (which is a rotating menu).
The tree people live in the forest. They eat their own foods, which they grow themselves. They speak the human language, but also have their own language (which is kind of like telepathy, too).
Efotora: There’s humans and mermaids.
The humans can all speak one language, but some also have their own language.
Mermaids can also speak the common human language, but they also have their own language. They live directly under Vanoch. The humans there don’t like mermaids, but they’re unaware the mermaids live under them.
Uglerune: Three of the races here are the Core Folk, Nimbus Siren, and Timber Elves.
The Core Folk are humans. They are the ones who live in Auxodeodo and the two towns. They eat a combination of foods people eat in the real world, and fantasy foods. Their language is called Common (which the other races also learn so they can communicate easier).
The Nimbus Sirens are split into two: those who live in the river, and those who live in the ocean. They both have gills, scales, and webbed feet. The ones in the river have frills and eat river fish, the ones in the ocean have whale-like tails and eat ocean fish. The ones in the ocean also eat seagrass, while the ones in the river will sometimes eat berries. Their language is called Waterspeak, and it slightly varies depending on whether it’s the river or ocean.
The Timber Elves live in the swamp. They have pointy ears, completely flat teeth, and bark-like skin. Their language is called Mucky.
Environment
Aechaghar: The weather here is pretty normal. There’s sunshine, clouds, rain, storms, snow and hail in winter, there’s light breezes and heavy breezes. Leaves do change colors. How much it rains depends on the season (more in summer and spring, less in autumn, and mostly snow in winter, although freezing rain can happen too).
Efotora: Depends on location. Lots of the places get normal weather, too. It doesn’t snow in some places (such as Vanosh, or the desert). It doesn’t rain in Coldbell, as it always turns to snow here. Murkbell doesn’t really experience any seasons, since it’s completely inside.
Coldbell is often snowing. For Vanosh and Mana, it rains more often than other places.
The Tree doesn’t experience weather, either. It’s has a soft glow, and it’s always right between cool and warm.
Uglerune: Also depends on location. Auxodeodo and Fanfoss experience normal weather, as well. Highmaw is right by the volcano, so it only experiences sun, clouds, and sometimes wind.
The Dry Wilds and Mount Presmore don’t experience rain or snow.
The Igloo Forests only experiences sun, snow, clouds, and wind.
Thurport Polder also has no snow. It rains often here, as well as Waveless River and Woodleche Ocean.
The Mountain Lizard Forest and the Curious Realm have no seasons.
The Mountain Lizard Forest has a spooky feel to it. It can rain, but it usually turns to mist before it can land.
The Curious Realm has an even more spooky feel to it. In addition to having no seasons, it has no ground; to move around it you have to use pathways, sometimes hopping between them. The sky is blue, but it’s completely the opposite shade of the normal sky. There’s also no clouds.
Another thing about the Curious Realm: only a few characters can actually move around in it (another thing inspired by Echoes).
Admittedly, I wing it in my stories and sometimes forget that a certain place is supposed to have a certain climate
but without further ado…
Asdur is one of the largest countries in the realm of Idelhen, and it mostly occupies the central part of the planet. Because of this, there’s a larger variety of environments within Asdur than within other countries.
- Irien is a town in the northernwestern part, bordering Sorien. It lies in a shallow valley with hills mostly to its north. It has four seasons. This is also where a good chunk of the story takes place at the start, since the protagonist lived here while he was still training under his mentor! They specifically live in a castle on top of one of the hills overlooking the town.
- Stoll is a village still somewhat in the northern region, but not as far north as Irien and has a different altitude. It’s surrounded by dry, hot deserts. It’s not super hot and dry, but it never gets cold either.
- Mittir is the capital city of Asdur, located rather centrally within the country. It has a river but I haven’t decided whether I want the river to pass through the city or along its borders lol. It has three seasons: hot, cool, and rainy. It’s much more dense and urban than both places above—mostly because it was inspired by ultra-dense Asian cities
and my experience in Chicago. There’s a decent amount of humidity too.
Sorien is a country north of Asdur. It’s known for being one of the more developed countries in the realm, and its cities are known to be big, bright, and bustling. It has four seasons.
- Beor is a megacity with a more popular, modern side and a more old-town side with classical architecture. I don’t remember too much about the weather or how it compares to other places in-universe since I’ve only written one event there so far
however, I imagine it to be considerably cooler than most parts of Asdur. - Luthien is the capital city and it’s located within the western part of the country. This one is more inspired by European cities, so most of the buildings are old, but beautifully so. Not that many skyscrapers save for a few in the central business district. I’d say its weather is less extreme; it still has four seasons but it doesn’t vary drastically like in some places.
Ellum is a city in some nation-to-be-determined south of Asdur. The environment is tropical, so it’s hot and humid like where I came from!
Think swatting mosquitoes away, keeping bugs out, and wearing thin clothing to reduce the amount of sweat you’d produce.
Merre is a coastal country in the southern part of the realm. Since it’s rather far south of the equator, it has three seasons instead of two, like Mittir.
Regel is a country in the northeastern region of Idelhen. There are four seasons like in Sorien and parts of Asdur, but the weather in some places is more pleasant than others.
- Ostiel is the capital city and I don’t remember too much of its weather other than the fact that it’s known for being sunny.
- Duvæn is a smaller lakeside city. It tends to have cooler weather than other cities in the summer thanks to the lake, and during the winter it becomes snowier due to the lake effect. They have lakeside beaches, too!
Kal is the northernmost country in Idelhen, and as you can expect, it’s pretty cold. And always snowy.
- The town of Zwaraven in particular is known for being harsh. Not only does it get pretty dark for long stretches of the year, it’s prone to blizzards and also subject to attacks by hordes of strong beasts. If you’re wondering why anyone would live there, don’t worry—the characters in the story are wondering too
but people are stubborn and some of them just don’t want to move away from home ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Ildor is where the protagonist’s mentor is from. I haven’t decided on an exact location other than it being north of the eastern part of Asdur. It’s generally cool, no extreme weather, and lots of nature around! Especially the outskirts. There are some hills and forests near the city, and their academy—in this universe it specifically refers to a magic school—is located in a hilly area, too.
That’s mostly it for now (:
Thanks ![]()
Sporadically, when I think of them
You can answer older questions with other projects if you want to.
Berries that grow by the river? Or do they actually come out of the water?
I like that name ![]()
What do you mean the opposite shade of the normal sky? Do you mean a different kind of blue?
Same XD
Topic 10: Culinary Culture
What do they eat, and where do they get it from?
Culture, but specifically food. I like to bring up meal scenes in my stories because it’s a good time for characters to sit down and get to know each other, and each other’s culture. Maybe the local food is weird, or maybe there’s some surprising similarities.
But when you think about food, you might also think about harvest and imports. Are there things they like to eat but which they can’t grow there? Or, are they the ones sending out certain foods to certain other places?
If they do eat spaghetti like you do, where does their pasta come from?
This is hard for me to answer. Mainly because I haven’t placed much thought into it because I know that they eat, but what they eat is something I never put much thought into it.
Alagossia is nothing like Earth, which is why I am struggling with food and more.
Basically, I haven’t world-build hard enough.
I love food scenes too, but that might just be because I love eating and making people feel hungry ![]()
I don’t think too much about culture when it comes to food in my current story, I guess partly because the setting is much smaller—their planet is much smaller than Earth’s—and their society is modern and well-connected, which means it’s not hard to get food from other parts of the realm. There are also way fewer countries there than on Earth, so regional foods just get “lumped in” to put it one way.
I would say the closest I’ve gotten to establishing a culture with food would be this one scene towards the end of Act I. The protagonist’s two friends are taking him on a tour of the academy they graduated from, which is set in their universe’s equivalent of Southeast Asia, and they stop by the dining hall. The main character is too shy to join the queue since he’s an outsider, so he observes from afar.
The food is described a little vaguely, but it is Southeast Asian–coded as a whole: the cafeteria offers fried rice, grilled chicken, fried pork belly, layered cakes, cold fruit salads, and prawn crackers. One of the characters gets a ton of prawn crackers because they’re especially addictive, and as a Southeast Asian I can confirm they are very addictive ![]()
I use food scenes to illustrate situations/backgrounds/life stages more, I’m not sure how to explain it other than giving examples.
Most of the food scenes in the book feature upper-class dining since the protagonist’s mentor is from a very wealthy background. Think meals with multiple courses, wine pairings, and high expectations of etiquette even at home. However, when they’re at work, the meals are much simpler—think slapping together sandwiches and drinking water—because they don’t have time for proper sit-down meals.
My protagonist is currently living on his own for the first time and also super tired at the end of the day, so his solo food scenes at home are what you’d expect: scouring the fridge for leftovers, eating instant noodles, and surviving on soup from a can. He also may or may not have accidentally turned an omelet into “rubber and burnt filling” ![]()
I would probably have to explore the cultural side of their food more in the second draft ![]()
Uhhhhhhhh honestly I have no idea I literally make it up on the spot and hope no one notices ![]()
Grow by the river, yes
Yeah, that’s what I was going for
