I only know really basic sentences like “Comment ça va?” or “Je ne sais pas” I only took Mandarin in secondary school because they forced us to. As soon as they made it optional, I dropped it :joy: I mentioned it on my personal thread, I think.

Speaking of languages, a lot of tennis players are multilingual or at least bilingual. A lot of the top players come from countries where English isn’t the native language, so they speak English + their native language. Some speak more. Immigrants are usually trilingual, like Sascha Zverev. His parents are Russian but he was born and raised in Germany, so he speaks Russian, German, and English. Mixed heritage players are also trilingual, like Tsitsipas. He’s half Greek and half Russian, so he speaks Greek, Russian, and English. Then you have people like Medvedev who are trilingual because they live(d) in another country or to share the same language as the coach. Rublev is Russian but his coach is Spanish, so he speaks English, Russian, and Spanish. Then you have those like Federer who comes from a place where being multilingual is common (he’s Swiss) so he speaks four languages: English, Swiss German, German, and French. And then you have polyglots like Djokovic. In addition to his native Serbian, he speaks English, fluent French, Italian, even Chinese! And he speaks more. I remember him giving a speech in 100% Italian, and when he was in China he flattered the crowd by speaking in Chinese. He also answered his interviews at RG in fluent French.

Which reminds me of Nadal. Dude’s won RG more than any other person in history but, compared to Roger and Nole, is the worst at speaking French. At RG this year when the interviewer asked him in French he was like “Sorry, can you repeat that?” and even conducted part of the interview in English  meanwhile Roger, Nole, and Medvedev spoke in 100% French when interviewed at RG. Rafa, you won in Paris so many times, I thought you’d be good at it by now :joy:

This also goes for the women’s side. I remember Serena giving a speech in French. I know Muguruza is at least trilingual: her native Spanish plus English plus French. I remember someone joking how Mladenovic speaks several languages.

Yup, a bunch of tennis players are multilingual. It’s quite cool if you think about it. I don’t know if a lot of the American players are also multilingual or if they only speak English.

Oh they made headlines in the news where I lived. Basically countries make direct deals with the manufacturers to secure doses. Of course, the rich countries get priority, so they basically bought so many vaccines that everyone else is on a waitlist. That’s why my country—and a lot of others—was stuck with Chinese vaccines—we had no option. Well, we had an option: wait and let the people be unprotected and let more die. We were also lucky to secure some AstraZeneca doses. I think my government even managed to get them to manufacture in my country, sort of? We’re still lucky we got vaccines in the first place. Some countries don’t even have, not even for their healthcare workers. At least that’s what I’ve heard.

I’m not opposed to direct deals since the money they pour is the reason why the vaccines were developed so quickly. In fact, I think governments should try to do what they can to protect their citizens—we pay you taxes, you better do your job. When my other country (the Philippines) messed up their direct deal with Pfizer to secure vaccine doses, all the Filipinos were cursing the government and the minister of health. That freaking minister of health deserves to be cursed—you had one job and you messed up! :rage: at least they’re catching up now. All of my older relatives there are fully-vaccinated, and a few of my cousins managed to get Western vaccines. I have a cousin there who’s a front-liner and she’s one of the first to be fully-vaccinated—I forgot whether she got Pfizer or Moderna.

What I’m opposed to is hoarding all of them and leaving the poorer countries to wait. Even worse? Even if you’re fully-vaccinated, you can’t fly to Europe if you didn’t get the Western vaccines. You can’t visit Saudi either. A bunch of my people in my country who otherwise would’ve visited those countries (especially the latter, because hajj and umroh, and my country’s at least 90% Muslim) can’t fly there even if they’re fully-vaccinated because they got Chinese jabs.

“Hey if you got fully-vaccinated come on in! Our borders are open now! Oh wait, you got what? Sinovac? Oh sorry we only accept Western vaccines like AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J. Get out. You’re not welcome here.”

Hey, it’s not like we had a choice. You guys hoarded all the vaccines so we had to resort to China and Russia. Not all of us are rich enough to fly to the US or other countries to get Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, or J&J. I’m just lucky I chose to study in the US. Imagine all those foreigners who are supposed to work or study in Europe, but don’t readily have access to approved vaccines. My dad said that some OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) are complaining and that they should be given Western vaccines and exempt from Chinese ones; if they don’t, then they can’t go back to work because they won’t have the approved vaccines.

I’ll edit this post to show you the links.

On the bright side, my aunt said that Biden will donate excess vaccine doses to other countries. They should. The longer we leave less fortunate countries unprotected, the more the virus will stay, the more variants will develop, and the more this pandemic will be prolonged. If we want this to end, we should try to vaccinate everyone in the world. As long as the virus is still out there infecting people, it can come back to bite you.

I actually posted a rant about this on my personal thread but deleted it because I knew the people who lurk there reside in the countries mentioned.

He’s not the only next gen terrible in volleys :joy: Some say they’re only good in serve, forehand, maybe backhand, but they’re lacking in the net department. I think Berrettini is the exception because he’s the best out of all of them on grass. He even beat Murray on his way to his Queen’s title this year, and reached the Wimby finals!

EDIT: OMG TSITSIPAS LOST TO OPELKA  Tsitsipas became Tsitsifail (geddit? Because pas and fail?) We can be less worried now. Med steamrolled Opelka at RG in straights. He also has a 1-0 h2h record against Isner. Their only match was on outdoor hardcourt last year, and it was brutal. 6-3 6-1!

I know logistics is an issue. However, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try. I lived in a 17,000+ island archipelago that’s third world, developing status, and hot. Despite that, we still managed to distribute the vaccines that we did receive. I find it hard, if not impossible, to excuse wasting vaccines when there are millions, or even billions, out there dying because they can’t be protected. And refrigerated containers exist.

Qui a coupe le fromage?

I agree. Just logistics make for a lack of help.

The only words I recognize are “coupe le fromage” which I assume means “cup of cheese” I don’t know what the whole sentence means. I’m an absolute real beginner in the language

“Who cut the cheese?” --Freakazoid

What!! How long did it take these people to learn all of this? Why are they all such geniuses >.> Do you mean Mandarin?

Oof. So, it’s basically a requirement for them to speak more than one language? xD

Very impressive. It is cool.

That should be a given. Ugh, governments. Most of the time, they break your trust.

What do they have against those vaccines anyway?

Sigh. It’s all a mess. People should be more focused on helping each other during the pandemic, not withholding and hoarding. Or even trying to do business. I don’t like how everyone tries to put economy above human lives.

Yeah, I have no idea why people are hoarding them. That’s just inconsiderate. And wasteful. What benefit do they even get out of it? Reminds me of people doing crazy paranoid things like hoarding toilet paper, except a million times worse.

Oh? :eyes: I kinda want to read it. xD Anyways, I’ll let you know I won’t be offended at all because personally I don’t really take much pride in what the government does. I have my own opinions but to stay in the safe side, I’m not going to delve into them because you never know. They recently had this new bill about regulating what’s on the internet and all, and I’m sick of all this. Blech. Politics suck.

Haha I guess that’s true, though I had higher expectations of him >.>
Ooh, wow. :eyes:

I KNOWWWW. I WAS RIGHT ABOUT TO TELL YOU. :joy: I WAS SO ANNOYED THOUGH BECAUSE I REALLY WANTED THAT TSITSI-MED FINAL HMPH. xD I was like, you idiot, you let him beat you!!! :woman_facepalming: Oh well. At least we can watch Meddy crush Opelka. And Isner. :triumph: (Also, nice pun–ish-thing?? :woman_shrugging:)

Edit: he kept smashing his racket  tbh I kinda feel bad for him

Some people just have a knack for languages. Not gonna lie, they actually inspire me to relearn French. They’re partially the reason why I hope to get a course as soon as I can.

Yeah, I think he spoke Mandarin? It was in Shanghai so probably. I forgot what language the article specified.

It’s not really a requirement, but basically everyone’s like that :joy: well, if you’re going to be going around the world or visiting a country multiple times, might as well try to break the language barrier.

I know right? I think there should be some international rule that countries can only secure doses for double their population at most, not more than that. I think they just want to punish China for the pandemic by not approving their vaccines, or maybe they just don’t trust them. Look, I hate the Chinese government. They’ve done a lot of shady things in Southeast Asia (cough Spratley Islands and Nine Dash Line cough) but this is a freaking pandemic. A vaccine is a vaccine. Doesn’t matter where it’s from.

Same! This is why I’m largely apolitical. The modern political landscape is just so bad. What’s worse is that people are fighting over politics, even going as far as divorce or cutting off people permanently. Some just paint an entire wing in a bad light. I have political views, but I don’t want to parade it, nor do I want to shove it down people’s throats. The way people treat each other for having different political views is disgusting as well. What happened to open discussions or tolerance? This is actually why I wrote my poem “to think different” because people get so easily offended or are so closed-minded (even if they claim to be otherwise), it’s nuts.

I also hold some views that I know that, if I share them on this forum, people would probably hate me and kick me out. But I don’t share them. I don’t hate the people who don’t agree with me. I respect them. I can say I’m online friends with them. I don’t care what your politics or whatever is. If you’re nice to me, I’ll be nice to you. As simple as that. Wish more people nowadays knew, because unless you have a popular view you’re better off silent unless you want to be shunned.

Hahaha we can get another chance, because the two rivals are on opposite halves of the draw at Cincy :joy: although, Tsitsi has a tougher road. At least from the draw.

Reminds me of that time when he returned a serve and his racket broke. At least this time the racket broke on purpose :joy: Not a good look for his sponsor :grimacing:

Yeah. I’ve always wanted to know how that knack worked. xD I’ve tried learning a bit on Duolingo before, but the way it teaches is kind of messed up. xD I mean, you can still follow along, but it’s all over the place.

Oooh. There are a lot of dialects, though. Shanghainese is a thing, I think.

Yeah, and you might embarrass yourself otherwise :grimacing:

Yeah, and there should be a rule about helping other countries in need when there is such a worldwide crisis.

Well, I mean, what they’re doing isn’t really much better, honestly… but people are people. And same. I’ve heard about that. Governments just seem like… the least reasonable of people sometimes.

Exactly! People are going so overboard these days. Everyone thinks they’re in the right and refuses to listen, as if they know everything. It just causes division, and we all know that it’s the last thing the world needs right now… It’s crazy what people do just for the sake of asserting their own opinions. It seems like so many are so extreme nowadays and never find a right balance. And then there’s also the negative associations they have with certain groups just based on what a fraction of them have said or done in the past.

:point_up_2: :point_up_2:
Exactly! We all know we have different opinions, and not everyone has to conform or think the same way.
It also doesn’t help that this world has evolved to view cynicism and antagonistic language as cool. It just makes everyone more fired up and it gets exhausting.

Sigh, I know. It’s why I tend to refrain from commenting sometimes. I feel the same way as you. If only everyone saw each other as actual people instead of just walking, talking opinions that have to be refuted or whatever.

:eyes: Okay, he better get through next time xD

OOF.

This reminds me of all the Duolingo memes, where the bird is giving you death threats if you don’t continue your lesson. Some of the captions were like “Russian or concussion:joy: I was interested in those language apps, but I think I’ll fare better if I had an actual person teaching me.

I know right? In my country there are a lot of Chinese-Indonesians and their dialect isn’t Mandarin, but Haka if I remember correctly? Hokkien? Ke? Idk.

If you look at my DNA there should be some Chinese DNA, and my mom says that she has at least one-eighth Chinese DNA, but culturally we’re 0% Chinese. We don’t even know which part of China we’re descended from, we don’t celebrate Chinese New Year or other Chinese festivals, and none of us speak any Chinese dialect except my bro, but that’s only because he’s learning it at school.

I’m curious, have you ever seen people who are Chinese DNA-wise but are like 0% culturally Chinese? A lot of Chinese Indonesians are like that. They can’t speak in any Chinese dialect unless they learn it at school. If you ask them what they identify as, they’ll say that they’re Indonesian. However, there are some Chindos (that’s what we call Chinese Indonesians) that are so Chinese, they even set it as the language on their phone. Not English. Not Indonesian. I think Mandarin?

Agreed. I hope they set up some international law regarding this. They can set up laws on waters, borders, and stuff like that. I know because both of my countries are archipelagos. International law states that from a certain distance from the shore of a country, the water beyond that is international waters so any country can fish there. Filipino lawyers tried to challenge this because “hey, we’re an archipelago, and the distance between our islands can be big enough so we have like ‘rivers’ of international waters within us. Archipelagos should be exempt so that other countries don’t go into our countries to steal our fish.” And they succeeded! I don’t see why we can’t have a law regarding pandemics and vaccines.

It really depends. Some governments are just corrupt or incompetent. Then you have governments like Singapore. I’m not Singaporean but man, that country is just so organized and well-governed. I envy their government; there’s little-to-no corruption! Then you also have governments that are in between.

This is why when I heard that they want teenagers to vote, I was like “NO NO NO ARE YOU STUPID!?” You want to know how bad leaders get chosen? Votes. You want to know how good leaders are chosen? Also votes. The problem is the voters. I don’t trust teenagers to vote because, let’s face it, they can be pretty stupid at times. I’m saying this as someone who graduated from a prestigious high school recently. If I can still find stupid teens in an elite school, for the top bla bla bla percent of the country, how much more in the general population? Not to mention that the human brain doesn’t fully develop until about 24 or 25 years old. They need more years to experience life and form their own opinions that are not simply parroting someone else’s ideals or just simply following what’s popular because it’s popular.

Can I just say I’m so glad that I’m not alone in thinking this? Really, thank you for thinking that way. I have friends from both sides of the political spectrum and I don’t see why we should always bicker or debate. Reminds me of people in mainstream media with their holier-than-thou attitude trying to shove their ideals down people’s throats. Share them, sure. Tell us to believe in them or else we’re degenerates? Uh, no thanks. The inflammatory language towards either side is not helping either. We should be finding middle grounds. And if we can’t find a middle ground, fine, we can’t always find one, but at least respect that other people think differently.

Speaking of which, I found this video that I think you’ll agree with so much. You know our world is crazy when Mr. Bean is speaking so much more sense than a lot of people.

Reminds me of that unpopular opinions thread about reading. I sort of regret posting there. I sort of posted my opinion there as a response to someone, but eh, people will be people. There’s another unpopular opinions thread up right now but I’m not sure if I should post there or not. Man, the number of times I’ve restrained myself is insane. I don’t even post everything on my personal thread because I fear that people will start hating me. I’m even scared to like certain posts because soon people will be like “Oh, she liked this post? That says something about her.”

Actually, I don’t want him to get through :joy: because they say soon the rankings will be based on points only earned from this year, which means Tsitsipas of all people might be No. 1. I don’t want that to happen. I’d rather have Djokovic as No. 1 :joy: I need Tsitsipas to lose as much as possible so that he doesn’t climb up the rankings

Neither of you are alone in that. Those who are of the other end of the spectrum from the “highly chronically offended” are numerous. Older ones are plain confused as to how it’s gotten like this.

Hokkinese? Something like that. I’ve heard about it before but not much.

Well, there are those who have integrated so much into the western culture that they have no sense of their background, too. I think those are mostly the families who have been there for generations.

Yup. Although, I suppose that would require the countries to all cooperate, which is something they seem not to like.

Haha yes, as I was writing that Singapore came up in my mind and I was like, well, that’s one exception. xD I envy them too. They’re so cleanly, too.

But oh my goodness, exactly! I’m not even all grown up yet, and even I think it’s a bad idea. It makes me do this :woman_facepalming: when I hear a bunch of hot-headed teens claiming they already know what’s best and that they should be considered adults for this sake. I mean, I can already look back at my own life and see all the dumb decisions and stubborn opinions I’ve once had, and obviously, I’ve still got more to learn. Well, actually, plenty of grown adults still make stupid decisions but it’s a whole other case we probably shouldn’t get into now.

Haha, I’m glad you think this way as well. We need more of these people in the world. Personal opinions and political views shouldn’t be able to affect relationships in such a detrimental way.

YESSS, WELL SAID!!! Man, that put everything I was thinking into words. xD Really, I can’t believe how touchy our culture has become. You can be arrested for literally anything. It’s insane. Where did you find this video?

Is there? There have been so many I forget which is which. xD Argh. I feel you about the liking posts thing. I do have that sense, although I still tend not to be very careful about it since I often click that button. xD For any reason I deem fit at the moment, even, not just about agreeing or not. Welp. They can think whatever they like.

Wait, it will?? :eyes: What! No. 1?! I mean, I would want him to lose too, but I still want to watch that match between him and Med >.> xD Sigh, oh well. Guess that can be reserved for another day. :joy:

So true. If we can’t even trust proper adults to vote properly, what makes people think that high schoolers should be allowed to vote? I think they should raise the voting age, if ever, not reduce it.

It was in my YouTube recommendations :joy: you know this was uploaded years ago? It’s sad. It has only become more relevant.

Yup. Speaking of which…

HE’S PLAYING RIGHT NOW BUT NONE OF THE STREAMS ARE WORKING :sob: so right now I’m just following the score from Google. Won first set 6-2, now leading 5-1 with Isner serving.

EDIT: WAIT ONE OF THE STREAMS IS WORKING BUT IT’S LAGGING BY A FEW POINTS I can’t PM you the direct link but I can PM you the directions

EDIT 2: Isner won the game. Med’s now serving for the match, 5-2. It’s almost over.

Ah, I was expecting that to be the case. It really is pitiful. I like what he said, though. It would be great if more people could at least consider those words.

WAIT REALLY, I THOUGHT THEY POSTPONED IT BECAUSE I COULDN’T FIND ANYTHING!! AAHHH!! LET’S GOO, MED!!

AHHH THANK YOUU!!! Argh, I knew it didn’t make sense when I didn’t see anything! xD

:eyes: I CAN’T BELIEVE I MISSED IT :frowning:

I PM’D YOU THE DIRECTIONS YOU STILL HAVE A CHANCE :eyes:

EDIT: Nooooo it’s break point for Isner ;-;

Strongly agree. People need to listen more instead of just trying to only focus on making themselves heard.

EDIT 2: He won! man, he steamrolled his way to the final. Sorry you couldn’t get to watch it, but hey, you still have a chance with the final

I WATCHED LIKE THE VERY END OF IT :eyes: MED IS AMAZING!!! BUT I’M SAD I DIDN’T GET TO SEE THE WHOLE MATCH :sob: AAAAHHH I NEED TO SEE THE FINAL. WAIT WHAT TIME IS IT AT?

Yes, I know!! WAY TO GO, DANIIL!!! :tada:

:100:

I couldn’t watch the whole match :sob: I only watched the end of the first set, the start of the second set, and the very end of the second set. The streams were lagging so badly. And the pop-ups! I had to resort to another streaming site and the pop-ups were bothering me like crazy. I spent more time closing pop-ups and ads than watching the actual match (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

I HAVE NO IDEA BUT I’LL GIVE YOU A PRO TIP

  1. Go to Google
  2. Type the name of the tournament. In this case, I use Rogers Cup
  3. Search. Not only do you get to see scores (which are updated live, by the way) but also schedules of future matches as soon as they come up.

You can do this for all tennis tournaments, except Olympics for some reason.

I know right? LET’S GO, GET YOUR FOURTH MASTERS 1000 TITLE :fist: :tada:

See, I told you you didn’t need to worry  Opelka had an exhausting match against Tsitsifail while Med just cruised past Isner, so I can expect him to win tomorrow.

Oh dear. I’ve tried using adblock and it does work! xD Fewer popups, but there are still some tabs that get opened.

Oh yes, I’ve done this before. :joy: But I thought it did work with the Olympics too. :eyes: Or maybe that was just the previous ones. :woman_shrugging:

Okay, I just searched up the schedule for tomorrow and it says not before 4 PM. It’ll probably be around that time. Good. I don’t think I’m busy around then.

WOOOHOOOOO!! HE SO DESERVES IT! :raised_hands: :tada:

 Yes, I’m so relieved. I can’t wait!!

Oooh yeah, I have to install adblock on my new phone. The thing is that it has a tiny amount of storage so I’m not sure if it still has room for that >.> adblock is a real gift :joy:

Yikes, I hope I’ll be available by then. We plan to go to church in the morning, then buy some things after that, have lunch, and then go back. We might be back by 2, but still. Hopefully it’s at night, but not too late at night

Yeah. I just saw that they’re planning to have it at 4 PM ET. Is that like 3 for you guys? But not night, so… :grimacing: hopefully you guys will be back. At least it isn’t in the morning. I was hoping it wouldn’t be because we have church too. xD
