I think maybe your princess protag and the rival used to have a crush on each other in childhood and played together but the princess didn’t say she was a princess. So, when she suddenly had to go away to meet her betrothed prince, the friend got angry. When the princess came back, she and the friend had a falling out.
Years and years later as adults, the friend is now someone who hates the royalty and is working for the crime lord. The crime lord tells her and his son to go capture the princess before the princess marries the prince. And that’s how she reunites with her friend and old crush.
At the same time, the crime lord’s son and the prince get captured by a group of bandits and are separated from the ladies. The crime lord’s son and the prince end up having to work together to save themselves and also fall in love.
Meanwhile, the princess and her old friend begin to reconnect and realize their feelings for each other.
Meanwhile, the king and queen, the crime lord, and the friend’s parents are all at odds with each other and want to murder each other and start a war. The kids who are now adults and all in love, have to try to stop it.
Kind of like Lion King 2, but with humans.

Honestly, I plan to have the best friend, just some guy from a wealthy family, who is the only one out of his sibling “not dating/married” and having no children.
He and the princess have been dating for a few months, they started as friends for a bit though, not too long. They are still in the stages of getting accustomed to dating each other, yet things are progress, until the plot takes off. Then…then it is a test to see if they can last long, while trying to save a battered nation.
