1st person vs 3rd person

which do you personally like better? struggling between writing in a 3rd person view for a comedic affect or doing a first person descriptive (been reading a little too much acotar) but i’d probably not do first person descriptive for the comedic book, but perhaps another.
thoughts on either?
which one do you personally like to read better or write better?

Third person.

I like writing in third person much better than first person. I tend to read (listen to audiobooks and read manga or webcomics mostly) which are in third person.

I used to write in first person, but find myself unable to anymore. Yet I do read sometimes in first person, though not as much as third person.

Definitely third person but there are a few first persons I enjoy.

I mostly write in 3rd but have plans to give 1st a go

I prefer first person, and almost exclusively write in it (when I actually do write), though when I read it can go either way.

I think it definitely depends. I read a combination between third and first person and like both for different reasons. I think first person can provide almost immediate immersion and grants us a wider view of the characters thoughts and feelings, why third-person can be good for, like you said, humor, voice, etc. it feels like we’re an audience member watching a character and sometimes that slight bit of removal can be really nice–especially if the story is, for example, exceedingly dark or grim. Having the ability to have some dissonance from the character can be nice in those types of situations.

For me, I write a mix-up between the two, sort of whatever I feel the story calls for. For my fantasy series, it’s third-person. For my more personal coming of age/magical realism story, I write in first-person. I don’t really mind either

Love third, will never change! Can’t stand writing in first personally because I have so much worldbuilding to do with other characters. I also kind of feel like first person stories burnt me out from reading because I get a type of whiplash, like okay now I’m a 22 year old girl with brown hair with bad nerves trying to make it in Hollywood in one book to oh now I’m the leader of a werwwold pack trying to find my true love in another :joy:.

I like writing in either, but prefer reading in third, especially when written by an excellent writer who can make third every bit as immersive and immediate as first person. Sadly, so many first person writers out there, and I mean Big Five published writers when I say this, make every first person character they write sound the same. The thoughts of a sixty-year-old professor should sound a lot different from the thoughts of a giggly teenage schoolgirl, but a lot of writers today don’t seem to grasp that. (-᷅_-᷄๑)

So I prefer reading in third. (*^-‘) 乃

It depends on if the story is focusing on a singular main character or an ensemble cast. I prefer 3rd person omniscient when in doubt but sometimes 1st person just works better.

first person. I usually like it because it feels more intimate, like getting more into the character’s head.

I’ve read both, no preference when it comes to reading 1st or 3rd

When writing, 3rd person is more comfortable for me, but I’ve experimented with 1st person in the past (and my current WIP is in 1st person too)

Yes they really do. Or they all have the same sort of attitude towards life if that makes sense

Yes! I don’t like 1st person when it changes between perspectives it makes it really confusing lol

but for my story I want to convey that they are feeling the same way and thinking the same way towards the same perspectives yet they dont seem eye to eye.

so I’m having a hard time trying to decide how to convey that in a story.
im not sure if theres a perspective where they can look into 2 diff minds without switching back and forth

I am usually 3rd person all the way when it comes to writing. yet i’ve been on the ACOTAR series and the way she writes really inspires me to try 1st person

I would say that’s omnipotent. That’s the perspective I prefer to write and read in for the fact that I can know everything, haha.

I’ve only read one book written in 2nd person, and that was The Friend by Sigrid Nunez. A whole book written in that pov was just…argh. It got tiresome really fast. (ノ_<、)ヾ(´▽`)

That’s one of the series that inspired me to give it a go too :joy:

Gave you a migraine of something fierce, huh?

2nd person stories can only work in really short stories, not novel or even novella format.

To do an entire story in that narrative and well is rather impossible. At least, I think so.
