I was thinking while writing notes questions on how Anjan needs a true/real reason for why he does what he do.
I mean he is the “imperial fixer” who handle and deals with the problems of the rich and powerful. Yet I desire to know what is his real reason for WHY he needs to handle the problems and issues of the Sovereign’s court when the Sovereign herself should deal with it or something. What’s in it for him exactly?
I’ve been thinking super early on plot twists that sound so good to me and possible future readers. Yet this requires I do it right.
There is a real reason on why Anjan left the palace years ago to “handle familial problems and things from his past”, but this was something that the former Sovereign and his closest confidants knew. The former Sovereign has died while his closest confidants are “missing”.
Anjan returns to become the imperial fixer to the Sovereign’s Court again to finish where he left off years ago.
However, Anjan is a big mystery and even his departure from the palace years ago is shady and weird to many people.
Anjan is a private person and wants to not let many people know who he is, but many people fear him and oddly enough respect him because of his work.
I don’t want to reveal too much, but Anjan feels like a villainous main character who DOESN’T want to rule the world. Make of that as what you will.
Yup, you need to drill down to the why’s of what Anjan does. Is he desperate for money? Does he have a secret past with the sovereign or someone in the royal family? Is he being blackmailed into working for them? Is he secretly a relative, maybe illegitimate? Is he actually an alien from another planet, sent there to study them? There are dozens of possibilities! __〆(..)
I know. The thing is that there are so many reasons for why he chose to become this imperial fixer, but I need a reason that makes sense and is something unique to my story.
Like half revenge and half something else. All I know is that Anjan is a complex person whose reasoning for doing this is “help” the Sovereign and her court, but hide the fact that he is plotting something grander and darker.
If I’m understanding correctly, I think it’s veey interesting you are making your MC a villain. Do you plan to make him redeemable or a villain through and through? That could help you narrow down motivations.
Having motivations that seem reasonable, at least at first, is important. But as he grows more villainous, thise motivations can become more extreme and less reasonable.
I just need you to consider if his character arc works within the structures and theme of the story. I hope that you also make sure to have fun writing this story and not make it too dour and depressing.
I rather not list the four options here, chances are if I am become super serious about publishing then I would revealed a spoiler depending on whichever of the four options I decide to go with for the final book.
So, I will have to write it and choose whatever amongst the options for my eyes only.
I mean publishing is a while away, but I don’t know if you all have great memories or something.
