Have you ever looked at a fictional character (not your original character/someone else’s) and just wonder, how in the hell are they sane or even functioning on a mental level?
This is the character that is dealt with some serious shit, that if they were real, they’d be admitted to a mental institution or need some SERIOUS therapy.
Yeah, yeah, I know!
In some fictional stories, therapy doesn’t exist and people are capable of handling any situation regardless if that situation make them unable to cope mentally.
Blah, blah, blah…
Anyway, do you know of any fictional characters like that who are making you wonder or sometimes wonder, if they are truly, truly good on a mental level.
Yes, they are fictional, but even so, the way the handle problems by ignoring it or pretending they never existed while a SHIT TON of terrible things are screwing with their mental state, isn’t normal?
Well, I can tell you about a fictional character who is not good on a mental level. Lisbeth Salander from the Millenium series. She’s a very gifted hacker, has a genius IQ, and is a brilliant investigator. But she has had an abusive childhood which makes her prone to acts of extreme violence and she’s emotionally distant from people in general. Lisbeth suffers from some sort of mental health issue that none of the other characters in the novel, not even her closest friends, can seem to understand. Makes for a compelling yet extremely odd and bizzare character, but one you also really like and can root for. She clashes so well with her friend and research partner, journalist Mikael Blomkvist.
A breaking point where they snap, a decision made that suits the person and the burden I put them under, a gradual yielding to what is instead of what they want, wild abandon in the face of death, things like that.
Throughout the DB series, Danny gets shot, blown up, tortured, near-executed, betrayed, framed for murder / torture / treason, outnumbered / outgunned, and abandoned (deniable asset denied) multiple times. Sure, the British SAS are tough but everyone has a limit.
And animal watching. Right now there are four birds. Two of them literally ran to the water bucket then changed their mind, went around the bucket, and then to the seed plate. They went the long way literally running. It was so weird. They are also glaring at me as I write this
Yes, that’s right.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is the first one in the series (and the best one in my opinion).
I haven’t watched the Swedish films yet, I need to get around to those. I have however watched David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Great movie, though it doesn’t beat the book.
Might be a bit harsh of me to say, but Casca has no obligation to keep Guts’ sanity in check, and for the most part, was so traumatized by the events she mentally regressed to the point she couldn’t speak and was basically a child with no memory/acknowledgement of who Guts was. If you don’t mind spoilers: In the latest chapter(s) there was a ritual done to restore Casca’s memories, but this was done a bit wrong (difficult to explain). So, Casca is technically back (after years of being in this condition) she’s able to speak and she retained her memories of what happened during when she was Elaine (basically the alternate name used for when Casca was in that state), but she doesn’t have any memory of the eclipse and seeing Guts is a major trigger for her, she’s unable to speak with/look at him. Also, Griffith kidnapped her and Guts has reached his absolute lowest point in the entire series.
