tauriel kili legolas love triangle is not book canon. tauriel wasn’t even a character and although legolas probably played a role in the story due to his father, he was not mentioned in the book. (most the time I don’t remember there was a love triangle, which just shows how irrelevant it was)

EXACTLY!!! Although I enjoyed the characters in the movie - I just don’t get the love triangle

I only really see love triangles working when both sides are actually compatible, or very early on. Even then, the snubbed love interest could still play a part in the story as a friend.
