I know what the cover art for Project Succession should be!

I have an idea of cover art! I have a few pictures for a start, but the pictures are a basis for what I want my cover to be.

Here are the examples:

1

2

3

That is all I got for pictures, though they aren’t covers. Just a general idea of what I want.
Though this Project Succession is science-fantasy, NOT epic fantasy. So, magic and technology are coexisting with each other.

Thoughts and feelings?

Some pretty cool ideas! It might be hard to make any of these in Canva - this would be in the realm of Photoshop/Affinity. If you’re up for the task of learning a new software, I believe Affinity has a free 6 month trial at the minute.

Omg that third picture is the exact same one I used back when I was starting out and making characters :joy: There’s a blast from the past!

As a fellow science-fantasy author, an idea could be to mix elements of the two genres in the cover. Eg a lot of mine have space backgrounds but feature characters using magic. I use Canva Pro so have a few more options when it comes to designing on that site

There is another option, that involves words and background art.

So, I am still going to keep looking.

Defs keep looking until you find something that clicks. Honestly, at the end of the day, the important thing is that you like it. It is your story, after all!

Side note: cover making is like writing in a way. At some point you’ll have to go “yeah okay that’s actually quite good” instead of going for perfect :tipping_hand_woman:

Any cover you make that has images of people/your characters on it is going to have to be commissioned by an artist. Using already made images of people is either going to not look like the specific characters you want, or is going to be illegal for copyright reasons. Just a heads up, since all of those images feature people in the artwork.

Thanks for mentioning.

I’m going to go with words and background art in the end.

Update:

I know what book cover I want for Project Succession! Though what I want requires me seeking someone out for commission art, that would require money. Also, I can’t describe how I see it in my head that well, which is another issue. Still, I know what I want.

I am wondering if there is a temporary, placeholder picture that I can use for the time being that can work, though it isn’t final picture, just something to hold in place until I get a better cover art for Kindle Vella.

Probably should ask this?

I would suggest launching when you’re ready – you won’t just drop a chapter on Vella and go. I’d recommend doing a pre-launch marketing plan, even if it’s something as simple as a countdown on Instagram and starting to build a mailing list.

That should give you time to get your cover, too

(Also, you definitely CAN just drop a chapter and done - I’d just suggest not)

Are you saying that I should get Instagram first then post a chapter when I am fully ready and done with edits?

You want me to use Instagram to get started on marketing my book?

Dear God, that worries me. Do I have to show my face or not?

You can do it however you like, but I would suggest starting your marketing now, rather than after you start. Just to get folks excited and whatnot!

You can market however you already intended to  It was just an idea, Instagram is quite popular but I’m regretting starting mine again.

No, not at all

I am only on chapter 26 of Project Succession. I haven’t even started edits on chapters 1 to 10 yet. I have nine chapters left of the first book, once I actually start and complete chapter 26, it will drop to eight chapters. The goal is 35 and I haven’t started edits at the moment, because I wanted to at least tackle finishing chapters 26 to 35. Still, I might have to start a bit early, because I need to start editing the chapters and getting feedback on how to make it better during the rewrites.

Yeah, Instagram is popular, I barely understand it and I am just bothered by their Reels. The only reason I am bothered because of the distractions, I just don’t trust myself enough to do I am told, not go there to goof off and fall into stupid shit.

I don’t mean to be a downer. I am just worried about getting caught in a vicious cycle, even when things are going fine. I try not to doom scroll, which still happens, but Instagram will make it so much worse.

You don’t have to use Instagram to post on it. Use a scheduler. I barely log into any of my social media, lol

Oh…well this conversation went in a weird way.
Besides that, how can I promote and market myself when that day comes for it. As of right now, I am trying to start slow and get a feel for it, before I get super excited and “overdo” it. I want to ease my way into my post my edited chapters, while allowing things to grow.

That might not be the case, it might work differently, where I have to be quick and steady.

I don’t know what I am saying, I probably don’t make sense. LOL!

I post lots of tips on my blog regularly and I’m going to turn it into a podcast too. Your marketing should be an extension of your brand - if your target readers are, say, 20-30 year old women, you might be considering TikTok and Instagram, maybe Pinterest. If you want to build a community (this is important), you might be considering a Facebook group and newsletter.

There’s lots of tips and advice out there, but the important part is tailoring it to your audience.

Don’t stress yourself. You can go at any pace that works for you!

Those are such cool pictures! It’s great you have an idea

Reminded me of this cover I made for someone on Wattpad years ago. It was a Narnia fanfic.

Today, I don’t use real actors on covers, of course. Just the magical swirlies in the last photo reminded me of it

I plan to go with words and a background art.
