Is there a country that you barely or rarely hear mentioned?

So, is there a country that you hardly ever hear mentioned? This makes you sometimes forget that the country is a real place. Whether it be vacation, moving abroad, or on the news, you rarely hear about the country.

Do you know any nations like that?

My Turn:

In all my years, I have never heard mention of Luxembourg till a certain anime that I would rather not go too deep into. Even afterwards, I still don’t hear much about the country. I don’t even hear people talking about how they want to visit the country for vacation. Another nation would be Lichtenstein.

What about you?

If you head to Africa or Oceania, you’ll find them plenty.

A random list: Belize (North America), Paraguay (South America), Andorra (Europe), Brunei (Asia), Malawi (Africa), Palau (Oceania).

I mean, there are roughly 200 countries but only a few dozen of them ever get mentioned often ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My country, Indonesia, used to be much less well-known. When my family would travel to Europe and North America, we often had people asking us where we’re from, and then asking us what Indonesia is or where it is. The kicker? They know Bali, our touristy island, but not much else :sob: though global recognition has gotten better recently.

You could make a whole list out of this. In Asia you rarely hear about Central Asians (Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.) and some Southeast Asian countries like Brunei, Laos, and Timor Leste. There are tons of African countries that often don’t get mentioned—The Gambia, Niger (not to be confused with Nigeria), Eritrea, Lesotho, some others. Looking at Europe, there’s not much being talked about San Marino, Liechtenstein, maybe Georgia? And looking at the Americas, I don’t hear much about Belize, French Guiana, Suriname, or Costa Rica.

That’s just off the top of my head.

Mauritania. First heard of it on The Grand Tour: Sand Job. Never heard of it outside that

That’s in Central America. Oddly enough, Mexico is counted as North America by some people and others Central America, though. But yes, I never see Belize mentioned.

Since we’re on the Central/South America theme:

Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guayana, Suriname, French Guiana, The Bahamas and of course, the Galapagos Islands  I guess they’re considered the ‘less problematic’ countries by the Western, Americanized media.

Funny enough, I hear a lot about East Timor (Timor Leste) because we have a lot of immigrants from there here.

True, but Central America is considered a part of North America in the continental sense, which is what I’m using. But I guess that’s also a valid point: you can argue endlessly about how many continents there are.

Yeah, fair enough.

In general, it’s confusing, cause the vast majority of people just think of “North America” as only USA+ Canada to be honest. Then they go straight to South America, and just throw the central countries into South America “cause not USA”.

Yeah, that’s understandable. I don’t trust people because I think people are dumb, but culturally, Central America is probably quite different from North America and South America, but same can also be said about India and Arabia from the rest of Asia. You even have jaguars and olingos in Central America.
