I have an idea that is essentially Beavis and Butthead Take America in a Mythological setting
These are really good questions.
I’m not totally sure I understand your question but it doesn’t ever change TYPE. someone who can manipulate fire is never able to then become remarkably athletic. As is discovered, its some sort of genetic mutation but no one has been able to isolate what it is that causes the powers to come to certain people (also known as I haven’t figured this out yet really) The first signs of it appear when a child is about 3-5 years old, and gradually gets stronger until they’re 19 or 20. then they go through a ritual that claims to help balance out their powers… supposedly…
There’s probably some political action and activism done in the bigger cities, but where the story takes place, not too much. There are a couple of normies who when they find out the MC is an infected one still want to fight to keep him living in their neighborhood. But, seeing as there’s a career path alongside the military to keeping the infected ones out… it’s gonna be an uphill battle.
well, as far as I’ve worked out it’s more that the powers grow at certain times (right now with a new moon) on the first night of a full moon everyone’s powers are at their highest and hardest to control. so it’s more intensity than rarity or common.
idk I’m drawn to the powers being used against you without them being like shooting ice out of their hands or sm if that makes sense. I know the powers that the two MCs have but I need to figure out more.
So only psychic ones?
no.
like for instance, one of my MCs is crazy flexible and athletic even when he’s like in his 40s (NOBODY LAUGH ) but he’s not like elastagirl or sm. and the downside is he suffers from insomnia and perpetual restlessness or he gets deep deep pain in muscles/bones
the other MC has heat powers but he can’t like shoot fire, it’s just like if he held something for a few minutes it would be PRETTY warm, if it was flammable and on the new moon it could easily catch fire. and if he was leaning against a snowdrift it wouldn’t take too long to melt. but the downside is he overheats a lot, suffers from rapid dehydration and get fainting spells.
So subtle and not flashy. Interesting.
No, been daydreaming of long lines of inheritance between the fairy tales since I was 10 or younger…but this is not for a thing to do with that. Just was an imaginitve child.
Fairy tales? They have tropes you’re supposed to remember to touch on, so it’s a different type of story building where you’re gluing your own thing into a pre-made story. It’s kind of stifling, but like or dislike are more concrete words than what I’m feeling.
I plan on this being a standalone.
More resembles then strict adherence. Be kind of hard to keep it strict when she smacks the prince with the shoe.
Well, there are multiple “he” to this because:
- The programmer swiped a “normal woman” to be a Cinderella. Without interference, she simply marries a neighboring Lord, has lots of inconsequential children.
- Because the Prince and Pauper from a previous story switched and never switched back.
- The Pauper is illegally King.
- The system didn’t like that and has been trying to reboot the Prince and Pauper up until she was born.
So, she’s got a Prince (Pauper King’s son: the man hit with the shoe), a Bastard Prince (Pauper King’s son with the rightful Queen), and a Pauper (son of the rightful rulers) to navigate.
And the one you know from the start is Marquis du Thé (the bastard)…as in spill the Tea.
And I’ve not really addressed the shoe, yet.
It’s been her rightful class in the traditional storyline, so she’s more going to think class when it comes to men who aren’t nobility. There’s going to be a problem with smut, as in how much freedom she has to be with whomever she wants to be. As well as smuggling.
Du Thé gets more uptight the further along this goes, and is stuck between honoring his father, honoring law, and pleasing himself.
The Prince (Pauper King’s son) is plain physically interested in her and anything like her, but otherwise lives his life, is waiting on the illegal king to die so he can change all the crappy laws dad enacted.
The true prince adores her, but it takes him a long time to warm up to her.
Nothing about the three of them promises complete loyalty.
One of those women who will allow a man to be abusive, but not because she’s going to be walked on: no, it’s because she will kill a man for that, and is waiting for the right time to end the man in question.
She’s also the type, when it comes to smut, that goes “why the hell not?” then goes and gets into trouble.
That sounds like a great change of pace.
Is there advanced human-robot AI in this world? Who’s the programmer and why are they programming?
So she’ll seem to “tolerate” someone abusing her, but on the side she’s actually planning to kill the abuser? Does this happen with her family, or one the other male characters?
Original definition of android was closer to programmable humans. They are real humans, edited to have compulsions to a script…but that part isn’t blatant until she goes to see the "Fairy Godmother
Let’s see:
Directly kills 2 males. Has a hand in 3 other deaths. Only regrets 1.
But there is supposed to be only 1 prince.
She has 1 step-brother (abusive), 1 step-sister (3 little pigs), a half sister. She doesn’t consider the step-siblings family at all.
All this is done with the premise of not a one of them being nice people. Lol
Ooh. I just looked this up. I never knew that. Thank you! Your Cinderella take is really intriguing.
0_0 How does she go about these killings?
If she makes them into shoes I’m going to have to read it
Fey poison in an anti-rape condom made to fit a roughly 17th century society? Anti-rape device - Wikipedia
for two of them: quick death for one, slow death for the other. Meal poisoning to put that one in a deep sleep for another to strangle to death. Entrapment for another. Trying to save the 5th one condemns a him to a firing squad.
The world doesn’t really have a name. The country the story takes place in is called Ārya. The world consists of this country and what they call the ‘Western Isles,’ which are basically islands that formed into one country a while ago. This world is in their 18th century AD (except… if the UK was next to India.) And instead of AD, they have the ‘Age of Gods,’ which exists because gods are the rulers of the country. Then it turns to democratic sentiments rising, so sentiments much like the 1700s Europe, where democracy was just starting to develop as an idea.
I really love the rising tide of democracy in the story, which is even more emphasized because my second POV character is actually a vessel (a human through which a god rules), and she is also pro-democracy, even though that means losing her rule. Her best friend, though, is a vessel who would also see the end of the Age of Gods, but he’d rather the old kings sit on the throne. And my protagonist, the vessel’s lover, is part of the group that gets the power to rule in the end. Exploring the conflicts between these different political ideologies is really fun for me, and I’m really excited to see them play off of each other!
Ooh. What are the rules for succession?
What era in our world is your book’s setting inspired off of? (for aesthetic and ideologies both)
Edit: Also, is society matriarchal or patriarchal, in general?
Can only females rule the nation or can males rule as well?
Would that make Atlia a queendom if only female monarchs’ rule the land?
I am curious.
I’m close to following your footsteps XD Although, all stories are at different versions of drafts. So, I must say, I do really love one word titles no matter what anyone says. It’s like, when you read them, some big orchestral symphony plays. Like Inception or Interstellar music Brings on such strong intrigue.
I have sirens, too But not traditional sirens. What do your sirens look like? Do they have their own society and language? What is their choice of weapon when fighting?
Zombies. Zombies are usually the undead of something. Did these zombies used to be humans? How do you kill these zombies?
Oh, I like that Flipping the chosen one trope around, I see. What’s the girlfriend up against and how will she fight?
How are the witches in this “Untitled” different from the witches in “Tell”? And how are they similar?
Tell me more! This sounds cool. What’s the weather like for each season? What do werewolves eat in each season? Does it depend on wealth? If so, what’s the food of the wealthy and poor like?
What are the Snowpeople’s cities made out of? What is the oldest building there?
Right now, it’s Pandora, the MC. I like her because she’s my first princess character, but she’s not good at being a princess although she really tries. Sometimes she goes overboard with taking initiative and messes things up. But she always makes sure to apologize, tell the truth, and thank others. I also like how complex she is. While she is afraid to be tough and strict toward her subordinates, she does it anyway because she wants to prove herself.
Well, since a lot of the world is in ruins from the war, the best place is probably the war council room place (idk what I’m going to call it yet) which will have lots of throw pillows and blankets and be the overall most comfortable place. It’s where MC will surround herself with all her friends and those who are loyal to her.
I ended up answering all your questions @anon40030154
Thank you for all the questions!
So, the fictional state is called New Soleil. Right next to California. People do not know about such magical places although like Atlantis exists as legend for us, Atlia exists as legend for them. In New Soleil, Atlia is a lost city that is said to have existed on magick over a million years ago. Nobody would even remotely think that it still exists only in a parallel kind of world.
Atlia is partially submerged, but it used to be all the way above the sea. The more the evil gets to it, the more it begins to sink until it becomes completely unlivable. This is due to Atlia’s magick (keeping it above water) becoming affected by chaos magick (the evil).
Portals that only royal Atlians can create. The portal must be created over the ocean from the beach because that’s where it connects. Or, you could do it underwater.
Atlians XD They are a variety of sirens, also known as water nymphs. Immortal, only because of the magick that thrives in Atlia. And their royalty reigns.
Peace, love, kindness, unity, friendship, family. Those are the things important to Atlians and those are the things that keep the magick alive and good. If there’s always anger, war, and murder, the magick becomes chaos magick and the city will sink.
Not sure what you mean… Could you clarify?
Atlian
Yes. Yes, they do. It’s always been a monarchy ruled by a queen.
They do have a symbol. I haven’t decided if I want to make them have a flag or not. It’s three triangles in the shape of a diamond with a circle going around it and then three dolphins going around the circle (this is the best I can do because I don’t have a drawing XD ).
I don’t know yet XD I haven’t gotten there. I pants so, I’ll have to see what comes up
These do all go together Atlia was created by Poseidon as a gift to his beloved wife who is a water nymph and the first queen. Poseidon also owns a dolphin army and two of those dolphins were chosen to be his messengers when he needs to send word to Atlia. These dolphins talk and are larger than normal dolphins. So, dolphins play a big role in Atlian society. Often Atlians, to go far distances, would ride dolphins.
I haven’t decided anything about other sea creatures. I do know that most fish are considered more like neighbors than food. Fish are friends, not food
I’m hoping for dual POV, but now I’m not sure XD First is Pandora who wants to save Atlia and be the best heir to her mother the queen. The other one is Celeste who is human and idk what her goals are XD
Pandora’s father is Poseidon. Her mother is the queen. The god is absent and the mother is dead, so, that’s where she stands. She’s basically on her own with her faithful twin brother by her side. She has a hoard of siblings and most don’t like her. Celeste is from a rich family and the initial idea was that her parents were in the middle of a divorce and Celeste is being paraded around by her mother to promote her mother’s music production company.
OMG That sounds chaotic.
But how do they know the mark is on the skin of a person or creature? Does sacrifice really mean to kill something or can it be like, giving up a clean lake or something? If the mark is on the bottom of the lake, they can tell the gods to drain the lake?
Some thoughts I had
OMG, this is exactly reality XD There are people like this in our world as we know it. But that’s cool you thought of so many different aspects. I’m guessing there’s some conflicts among these groups. Do you have names for some of these extreme groups? Who is against whom the most? What do they do to each other?
Also, additional questions: What’s the technology like in your world? Smartphones, computers, or even any electricity? And, what do people do when they do get sick? You said many get sick, but what about vaccines? Do they not have medicine?
You’re welcome
Right now I’m working on four books, but I’m only really focusing on two of them.
My main project as of now is a new adult fantasy book about an amnesiac protagonist. He was found almost dead in the middle of nowhere when someone rescued him and took him in. He doesn’t remember anything from the time before he was rescued, so his rescuer’s trying to help him recover his memories. At the same time she’s mentoring him to become a guardian, a person with superpowers/magic/both who’s tasked with protecting towns from wild monsters.
I’m at the stage where he’s already a guardian, but he might lose his position because… er… let’s just say that he loses control if he sees someone bleeding
And about Atlia: which books are set in the world of Atlia? Is Lunar Heart, Shadow Bound also set in Atlia?
I meant that why do some get fire powers and why do some get water powers, for example? Does it depend on how they are infected? Like, maybe, if they get a really high fever, once they come out of it, they have fire powers? Or does it depend on how the disease affects them in their DNA? Certain people with certain DNA get fire powers, for example. Is it like that? Or something else?
So, more internal than external? Like, hearing people’s thoughts or lucid dreaming without control or maybe making things explode when emotions are out of the control?
What myth are you using?
This reminded me of one of my fantasy creatures from another story. If they overuse their fire powers for too long at once, they can burn themselves from the inside out. Same with water. They can drown themselves inside out. So, they have to learn combat and swordsmanship to balance themselves out in the battlefield so they don’t kill themselves with their own magick.
Oh yes, gotta love some good old political conflict
Well, Atlians are immortal so currently the First Queen has been ruling for thousands of years. Until one day the evil returns full vengeance so then she realizes that in case she does die, she should choose an heir. This is the first time she has chosen an heir and many disagree with her choice They can’t override it while she’s alive, but now that she’s dead, MC (the chosen heir) is in trouble.
The era is like…ancient to modern Greece, I think I’m trying to figure out what Atlantis era was thought to be like so I can take inspiration from there. I think it was ancient Greece or something close to that.
Society is matriarchal. Female water nymphs are seen a superior because they birth the pods and the ruling royal is a queen.
Atlia is a city. I haven’t decided if I need to make it a country. Would it be a queendom? Not sure It’s a pretty big city although partially submerged underwater. And no, males can’t rule. They are seen as slightly lesser than females, but not in terms of intelligence. It’s in terms of who gives birth and goes through all that female stuff
The males do help care for the children and male water nymphs are all taught to be kind and caring.
