Name needed for a Fantasy disease...

Like the title says… All I got is “The Rot”…

I don’t want to use a staple name like The Black Plague or Pox, but I wish to use something else. I feel that such a disease which is not understood and will wipe out lots of the populace in a certain area needs a fearful name, yet one that does not have ties to this world if you know what I mean…

All help is thankfully accepted…

Try fantasynamegenerator.com for some help.

Admittedly I’m not too good at these, but I’ll try.

  • The Withering
  • The Fog
  • The Drain

Perhaps it would help to elaborate more on the disease and the setting of your fantasy world? Like if your world is set in a modern/futuristic era, perhaps you could use an abbreviation (disease like SARS and COVID-19 come to mind). Or if the symptoms cause someone’s veins to turn black, you can use a name like the Sabling (from “sable”) or Vein Death, or something else that sounds better.

Knowing more about the symptoms of the disease would definitely help in coming up with a name for it.

Yeah… describing the symptoms would be hard right now as it has already wiped out the inhabitants… Their demise has left them in a thick ink-like covering of their bones… Like I said, it just sounds like Rot, but I don’t know… The Fantasy is Swords and Sorcery-like…
However, touching that ink-like substance can and will transmit the disease…

Symptoms I cannot guess at, as the event has already happened… All that remains is the ink-like covered bones and clothing.
Touching it would transmit the disease…

Then maybe something related to ink? Or not necessarily ink, but its color, or the aftermath. I’m going to assume that the skin and muscle “melt” into this ink-like substance from your description.

Maybe something like:

  • The Ink
  • Ink Death
  • Ink Plague
  • The Melting or Skin Melting, with victims of the disease being referred to as “the melted”

If your fantasy story’s world has a devil or devil-equivalent—or a deity of the underworld—you can potentially use it too. Like “Devil’s Ink” or “Devil’s Touch.”

I did come with a name called The Dark Ruins.

I don’t want to give too much away, but it would seem that I need to…

Olban walled itself off from the rest of the world, a vast undertaking that took hundreds of years to construct. A wall some eight hundred feet tall and sixty feet thick. The stone they excavated from the length of it, and within the walled length a deep moat they crafted from their efforts. The moat was some several hundred feet wide and deep.

Fast forward about six hundred years, and folk stated to go missing, accounts told of a creature that had made the moat it’s home… The Lords of Olban decided that to loose a few folk every now and then served only to aid in their protection, and left well alone…

It is here within the moat that the creature did spawn the disease, and in time it infected most of the waterways of Olban, and it spread. Swiftly the populace were consumed by it’s mind sickness, then their bodies began to bruise in a deep purple that weeped a similar coloured slime like inkiness. Which, once their bodies had decomposed due to it’s horrific ability to consume the flesh, it remained and continued to infect those who came into contact with it.

Within six months almost a quarter of Olban had fallen into death, and after just fourteen months all were dead…

While the creature had no name, it was the harbinger of doom for Olban, and whence it came, none knew…

As I say, I only have “The Rot” at this point… But I don’t know? Maybe it could be named after the Water Creature, or the Water itself. I’m not sure.

I like “The Melted” as a reference to the diseased remains, but maybe “Digested” would suit better?

Thanks for your suggestions.

The Water Ruin…
The Water Rot…
Dark Rot…
Dark Ruin…

All seem nice, but I’m still not sure…

So the first “symptom” would be mental, and then ink-like secretions, and then nothing but bones left. Hmm.

For some reason I’m thinking “Liquid Death” would work, but that’s also the name of a brand of canned drinking water.

Perhaps, but “the Digested” doesn’t carry the same eerie connotation, you know?

“The Consumed” or “the Dissolved” could work. Potentially something along those lines.

Or perhaps, “the Inked.”

Now this I like! Very much indeed…

I think I will stick with The Rot for the disease, and what is left would be known as The Consumed…

Thank you kindly for your help, and I wish you all the best in your projects too!
