OpenAI

I heard a lot of buzz about OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research laboratory and wanted to try it out. This is what I typed:

write me a novel about a vampire falling in love with a werewolf

And this is the response:

Eclipse of the Heart

The novel follows the story of a vampire named Alexander, who has lived for centuries, never daring to dream of finding love. He had always believed that love was a weakness, something that only mortals could experience. But one fateful night, his world is turned upside down when he meets a werewolf named Isabella.

Isabella is a fierce and independent young woman who has always known that she was different. She has the ability to transform into a wolf at will, and she has always felt like an outcast because of it. But when she meets Alexander, she finally feels like she has found someone who truly understands her.

As Alexander and Isabella grow closer, they begin to discover that their love for each other is forbidden. Vampires and werewolves are mortal enemies, and they know that they will be hunted if anyone finds out about their relationship. But they can’t help the way they feel, and they soon realize that they will do anything to be together.

As they struggle to keep their love a secret, they also have to deal with the dangers of their respective worlds. Alexander must contend with the politics of the vampire clan he belongs to, while Isabella has to deal with the prejudices of the werewolf pack she is a part of. But through it all, they have each other, and they are determined to make it work.

The novel follows Alexander and Isabella as they navigate the obstacles in their path, and as they learn to trust and rely on each other. It is a story of forbidden love, sacrifice, and the power of the heart to overcome even the greatest of obstacles.

As the novel progresses the two of them are forced to make hard choices and accept the consequences of their love, as they face the ultimate test of their love. Will they be able to find a way to be together, or will their love be doomed from the start? The novel is filled with action, adventure and a romance that will keep you hooked until the very end.

It’s definitely a fun way to find inspiration and develop your ideas more!

Yup! AI is going to put us all out of a job soon. I imagine publishers in the future will have AI that can create a bestseller every time, and there won’t be any need for human writers. Publishers won’t have to pay salaries or advances, and never have to negotiate with unions. The future looks great for them!

Not so good for the rest of us, though. (×_×)

I logged into ChatGPT, operated by OpenAI, and set the following task…

Write a thank you letter from Freyja, a teenage orphan girl, to Dov, an adult man and former soldier, who adopted and protected Freyja.

The exact response a few seconds later…

Dear Dov,

I cannot express enough gratitude for all that you have done for me. When I first came to live with you, I was a scared and alone teenager, unsure of what my future held. But you took me in, not only as a foster child, but as a daughter.

You have been a constant source of protection and guidance throughout the years. Your experience as a soldier has taught me strength and resilience, and your unwavering love and support has taught me how to trust and believe in myself.

I am forever grateful for the life you have given me, and for all the sacrifices you have made to ensure my happiness and well-being. I am proud to call you my father, and I will always strive to make you proud in return.

With all my love and appreciation,
Freyja.

…May you live in interesting times…

Hehe depends on if anyone is buying what they are selling.

I hope so! (>‿◠):v:

But I doubt it. Assuming Amazon survives another hundred years, I imagine around that time they’ll purge all the books uploaded today that haven’t sold many copies to make room for the books of the future. So even if a book written today was absolutely brilliant, it’ll be destroyed and no one will know that we ever lived. (ノ_<、)ヾ(´▽`)

Yeah, it’s a story, except this is just a book summary that is so vague, it could be any book and no book.

People are using chatGPT and other AIs to write their articles, essays, etc, and they post that garbage online for us to suffer through. I recently started reading an article about dogs and it was so bad. How does someone mess up a dog article this badly? And then I realized, it wasn’t written by a human.

People have started publishing books written by AI and I’m sad.

I don’t believe that at all.
Will it become a factor in future writing? Possibly. I can see a value in using it as a tool for small tasks, but not for a full book.

The bottom line is that people call it AI but it’s not a true AI. It’s Machine Learning. We feed it information and it tries to replicate something that resembles that information in a way that we teach it. It still needs humans to feed it information and it needs humans to program it to learn. It doesn’t learn from itself. It doesn’t learn from other machines. It learns from humans. All it can do is to copy us but copied art isn’t exciting.

It can inspire a story but not create a story

I agree with you both, but remember this is only the first generation. It’s clumsy and incompetent now, but a few decades from now it’ll write better than most writers today. It’s already better than some popular writers on TikTok, though I won’t name who. (>‿◠):v:

ChatGPT is better for brainstorming and vague outlines than I ever will be. It takes a human (as of right now) to work with those ideas and turn them into something readable.

Decided to experiment with ChatGPT again.

Freyja's letter update

New request:
Change the letter to show that Dov was a former commando, who volunteered to become Freyja’s mentor and bodyguard. Since their first meeting, Dov and Freyja had also become close friends.

ChatGPT’s Response:
Dear Dov,

I cannot express enough gratitude for all that you have done for me. When we first met, I was a scared and alone teenager, unsure of what my future held. But you, a former commando, volunteered to become my mentor and bodyguard, and in doing so, you changed my life forever.

Your experience as a commando has not only taught me strength and resilience, but also discipline and focus. And your unwavering dedication to my safety has given me a sense of security that I never thought possible.

But beyond the protection you have provided, I am grateful for the friendship we have formed. You have become a role model and a confidant, and I am so grateful to have you in my life.

I am forever grateful for the life you have given me, and for all the sacrifices you have made to ensure my happiness and well-being. I am proud to call you my friend, and I will always strive to make you proud in return.

With all my love and appreciation, Freyja.

An almost decent first draft. I think ChatGPT tried to cover all the main points within the first paragraph, and so it has a few glaring errors / stands out as unnatural prose. This would be close to my level of writing in grade-eight high school (I was not the most talented student back then).

Yasmine's Viking Saga

The request:
Write a Viking saga style poem about Yasmine, a young member of a mercenary team, who fought alongside the team with great courage and skill against overwhelming odds. Although the team was victorious, their leader died at the battle’s end. To honour Yasmine’s deeds, the team elected her to be their new leader.

ChatGPT’s response:
Yasmine, fierce and brave,
A shield maiden, fierce and true,
With sword in hand, she fought and saved
Her mercenary crew.

Against odds that seemed insurmountable,
She stood tall and unafraid,
With courage and skill, undeniable
She led her team to raid.

With her shield held high, she fought
And her enemies did cower,
For Yasmine’s skill and valor brought
Victory in that fateful hour.

But as the battle came to an end,
Their leader fell in defeat,
And so the crew did choose to befriend
Yasmine as their new chief.

So let her deeds be told with pride,
And let her name be sung,
For Yasmine, the fierce shield maiden,
Is a warrior among.

An interesting response. Needs work. Not what I was expecting, but I forgot to indicate the battle (time period) was set in the late 1980s…I got the request idea from the 2000s edition of the Warhammer 40K Space Wolf Codex, and the tale of Wolf Priest Ulrik the Slayer…

Update: Thought this video about ChatGPT could be interesting, for a business perspective.

I also had a glance at some ASX-listed AI development companies. At least one is specialising in using ChatGPT (or similar software) for future business-to-business correspondence, marketing and sales. With a few years refinement some entry-level office jobs might vanish.

Another update: Krista's letter to her brother

Request:
Write a letter from Krista, a twelve year old girl, to Gur, her eighteen year old brother. Krista congratulates Gur for his graduation into the paratroopers, and Krista thanks Gur for always looking after her when their parents were working overseas.

ChatGPT’s response:
Dear Gur,

I wanted to take a moment to congratulate you on your graduation into the paratroopers. I know how hard you have worked to get to this point and I am so proud of you. I can’t wait to hear all about your training and experiences.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank you for always looking after me when our parents were working overseas. I know it wasn’t easy for you, but you always made sure that I was safe and happy. You truly are the best brother a sister could ask for.

I hope you know how much I love and appreciate you. I am so grateful to have you in my life and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things you will accomplish in the future.

Love always,
Krista

At first I thought this letter would be too formal / professional for a young girl. But my character Krista is highly-educated (multi-lingual by the age of six, taught herself the violin at eight), so this response is plausible. I also asked for a more informal letter and, to me, it was way out of Krista’s character. Note that ChatGPT copied subject phrases from the request without adapting age-appropriate vocabulary.

The second response:
Hey bro,

I just wanted to give you a big congrats on graduating into the paratroopers! I know how tough it’s been, but you did it! I can’t wait to hear all about your training and the crazy stuff you’ll be doing.

And I also wanted to say thanks for always being there for me, especially when our parents were away. You always made sure I was cool and took care of me. You’re the best big brother anyone could ask for.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I love and appreciate you a lot. You’re an amazing brother and I know you’re gonna do great things.

Peace out,
Krista

…I doubt there’s any possible scenario where Krista would say ‘peace out’…

Omg they have! Human narrators have lent their voices to AI, and now those AI narrators are putting their human competition out of work. But I have relatives who work for Apple, so all I can say is…go, Apple!? ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯
