Out of Context! What happened in your story the last you worked on it?

Amidst the ruins of Arymh, Mari observes Yocha manipulating the desperate populace into following her, even though her promises of salvation are likely false. Mari despises their blind trust but understands their need for relief. He realizes that the impending war will cause many Yorymh civilians to die. Yocha, aware Mari won’t risk his life, is confident in her plans.

Inside a clinic, Mari contemplates his stash of weapons, feeling the weight of reality and his inability to kill a god. Yocha’s arrival startles him, and their tense conversation turns confrontational. She taunts Mari, hinting at his pre-battle ritual with weapons. The storm outside is seen as a metaphor for the impending conflict.

Yocha’s manipulative speech to the crowd disgusts Mari. He catches his reflection on a knife and considers his identity. Yocha’s voice continues to toy with him, and she suggests joining forces. Mari’s grip on the knife tightens, and he abruptly stabs Yocha, drawing blood. They struggle, and Yocha gains the upper hand. She emphasizes Mari’s dependence on her.

Yocha reveals she wants Hidayat dead by his own hand. Mari vehemently refuses, leading to a tense exchange. Yocha threatens to make Hidayat’s death excruciating if Mari doesn’t comply. Despite his defiance, Mari’s resolve is shaken.

Yocha’s demeanor changes, and she shifts her focus. Mari defiantly shuts down her threats, infuriating her. She stabs him, leaving Mari bleeding and struggling for air. Yocha leaves him, cold and forgotten, as his life fades away.

Pinti gets to Nuaka and the survivors ransack an inn. There’s nothing odd about that convenient storm that saved her from the Sorcerers. Nothing at all :stuck_out_tongue:

One of the inflection points in this werewolf mess:

Ch11 excerpt

I wasn’t surprised that I was left alone with my baby’s father. But I couldn’t help the nerves. I figured I’d get the worst of it out the way. “I’m sorry.”

His laugh was mirthless. “You’ve got nothing to apologize for. I gave you no reason to trust me.”

“I never tried to take that risk, either. And if I had, maybe I’d not be missing 6 days of my life.”

He frowned, but there really wasn’t anything to say to that, so instead of arguing, he sat down beside me and picked up the hand with a tube sticking out of it. Yep, still tiny in his…

My breath hitched. Sparks, tingles, whatever this feeling is likened to, its not accurate enough. My nerves were hyper-aware of the man in front of me, like each one begged me to pay attention to him. It funneled down into one word: mate.

Nathaniel Hall is my mate.

“I couldn’t be trusted to save you if I was one of the people hurting you,” he shrugged as he traced his fingers over mine. “I don’t want this decision to be about you picking the lesser of two evils, like it’s been this whole time. It’s going to be a risk because I have nothing that proves I can change, but I don’t want you placed in danger because of me, ever again. Everything I do from here on out needs to focus on that, or I’m not worthy of this gift.”

Considering how they have been behaving before this point, they wouldn’t change without a wake-up call that triggers this conversation.

Have you seen The Incredibles 2? It’s kind of about that. Superheroes stop crime, but they also destroy the city and people are angry.

Those movies are actually where I got the idea from :joy: It seemed a lot more realistic than everyone being constantly grateful

That’s true.

Have you ever wondered how many times the City of Townsville in the Power Puff Girls has to rebuild the entire city? XD

“This is all because of you. I never asked for this,” she taunted.

Hidayat swallowed hard, his throat burning.

He breathed heavily. Tears welled up in his eyes. He sobbed silently.

Tears streaked down his cheeks, mixing with the rain.

“So this is it, huh? This is the destiny you’ve chosen?”

Yocha hugged him tight.

“Now we can both go to hell. Or maybe, who knows? Maybe we’ll find paradise somewhere.”

“I hate you.”

Yocha laughed, her voice cracking slightly. “I know,” she said sadly. “I hate me, too. And that makes it all so much better.”

Then she let go, releasing Hidayat’s shoulders. She stepped back and began to walk away.

Hidayat sank to his knees. The cold rain dripped down onto him. He sat there, motionless.

“Please,” he begged quietly. “I’m sorry.”

Yocha shook her head and kept walking, her steps taking her far away from Hidayat.

“A child didn’t ask to be born with the power to peer through existence and crack reality,” Yocha pointed out, “Yet here he is. It’s cruel of fate to give someone such a gift and curse.”

Hidayat could barely hear anything over the pounding of his heart. “I’m sorry,” he repeated softly.

Yocha stopped. She turned her head and gazed at Hidayat.

“I don’t want you to apologize,” she responded. “Because you don’t mean it. You aren’t sorry for having caused the fall of civilization. Not in the slightest.”

Damnit Yocha

Well, there are Sorcerers as a race living in Elgana

The worst kind are the Junior Bounty Hunters (a gang of Junior-ranked Sorcerers who have nothing better to do) and they are after Kattalunae. And now Pinti, especially when they discover she has lunar magick.

Doing the Minutiae edit on BifL. This is the “rock bottom of the relationship” point. I may have posted some iteration of it before, but this is it, except what WP complains about commas, when I post it.

For all that we were within days of being grown adults under pack laws, we were just 2 terrified kids with the responsibility of our futures looming over us. He wanted to find shelter in me, and I wanted to hide under a rock.

I lashed out. “Look, all I do is piss you off and you run to another girl. You didn’t do this out of need, at all. So go whore yourself out because there is no us, and other than by your goddesses’ mercy, there never will be.”

He fell silent after that. I hurt like hell because I wanted us to be together, and I keep saying this stupid shit. I didn’t have to hurt him. I didn’t have to hurt myself. Hell, I want him to fight me.

We were thinking to ourselves for the last bit of the drive. By the time we pulled in, I’d made a decision. It was time to tell him the truth. Stephen had been right to question me on this. “Nathan, we need to talk.”

“Get out my car, Rachael.”

“But…”

“No, you were right the whole time. It should have never gotten this far, not until…” He hit his steering wheel hard enough that it should have broke his hand—the edge of the Alpha he’d be was just spilling out of him today.

Oh, shit. I didn’t have to be told twice, so I opened the door. Nathan grabbed my hand before I could step out. So small—mine in his looks tiny. I was arrested at the sight, choking off my self-preservation.

“Just tell me that you won’t fight this if it turns out you’re mine. Please.”

Begging is for losers. My father’s often-repeated mantra rang in my head. If anything, that scared me even more than our fights did. This was final, Nathan wouldn’t come back to me, not unless the goddess forced him to. My throat felt too tight to speak, so I nodded at him, and he let me go.

I wish he hadn’t.

It cost me more than my fears ever did.

Stupid girl.
