Strange Things You've Had to Research for Your Writing

animals that eat their own placenta
(apparently, aquatic animals, camels, and humans are the only mammals that don’t typically eat their own placenta. I find it interesting that camels are the only non-human land mammals that don’t.)

This led to discovering a wiki page on Human Placentophagy and dried placenta being sold as Chinese medicine and placenta being cooked into meals and terms like “self-cannibalism”.

I am disturbed.

I was just looking for some kind of term for animals eating their own eggshells or placenta. I did not want to find anything about humans or see pictures of dried up placenta on Wiki.

But I have seen it now.

I can’t unsee.

“long nose” in Greek for a character.

I like giving my minor characters literal names.

Meet Makrius Mytus, the long nosed general whose nose is so long it rests directly above his upper lip. His name is sort of “long nose” in Greek (μακριά μύτη = makriá mýti, according to Google Translate). Idk if Google Translate is accurate, but I don’t need it to be. I just need some base for inspiration.

Eh, I’ve had to some research stuff I’d normally tried to avoid  :flushed:

  • the average women’s shoe size
  • what is size 8 shoe in EU
  • how long is a size 39 foot?
  • how long is a size 8 foot?
  • how long is a size 7 foot?
  • define “girth”
  • Euphemisms for “doing the deed”

  • wet dreams

  • average length of a white man’s “member”

  • average thickness of a “member”

I promise you I’m not as dirty-minded as my search suggests  :flushed:

Oh yeah, people sometimes save them and eat them later for different reasons like special spiritual celebrations and such… YouTube can get dark.

In a lot of poor countries, the only way for the mother to regain her mineral balance and whatnot while nursing is by eating the placenta.

I’m currently looking into medieval battles in Germany and German knights. And also into WW1-era submarines.

Also while coming up with birthdates and death dates that work for my characters, I looked up the dates for the American Civil War and the Victorian era and accidentally discovered that two of my characters existed in the same time period and died within a year of each other, just in different parts of the world. Neat-o.

This is all for the same story lol.

Oh, my characters were learning horseback riding and I had no idea how fast or what the different types of horse trotting/galloping speeds were haha.

Madonna’s facelifts. One of my characters is 50 at the start of the book, and decides to get plastic surgery after seeing how Madonna looks at 63.
