Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 1)

Yeah, I think this one might be the last one, it’s for science fiction/fantasy/paranormal strictly. I found out about it randomly  Thank youuu!

Yeah, it was just PitMad, there are still quite a few genre/theme-specific pitching events happening throughout the year (I’ve participated a few times).

Nice. If you spot a thriller or a romance one, lemme know guys.

I feel really tired and I want to watch figure skating, since I am starved for figure skating, so I am going to take a writer’s night off. I did manage to edit a chapter for Radish, so I feel I can slack a little on the Fireman’s Girl.

I made the mistake of choosing to do the software upgrade now. Been waiting for a while now.
On the bright side, I got to catch up on this thread.

Not sure what the plan tonight is. I need to write something badly but I also want to do other stuff. Maybe let me open my project and see if the writing mood strikes me.

Maybe a couple of sprints will help me?
Hmmm.
Btw, still waiting…

The last podcast I listened to (Writing Excuses) gave homework to write down a list of story ideas. I want to use my precious time on something related to my project so maybe instead of that, I could write a list of scene ideas. Or maybe cool location ideas. I could use those. So far I’ve used very few.

Okay, update is done so let’s set a goal.

  1. Come up with 10 ideas and choose one as a prompt.
  2. Write 200 words for it. Even if it’s just a super long setting description.
  3. If after that I no longer feel like writing, I’ll be allowed to do something else.

Ready? Set. Go!

Deadline first unless it’s in need of CPR, then you get some help for that.

What @J.L.O said.

And, well, I actually wrote a little bit yesterday, getting into Chapter 20, stopping just shy of 41K. So, I’m closing fast on the Wattpad’s minimum word count for a novel with the Fireman’s Girl.

Now, speaking of the word count, I am thinking that with the re-write of my ONC fail, Maximus, into a novel fail, Champion in Love, I might be able to skip writing extensive backstory chapters. I have some ideas on expanding the relationship in the group of the gladiators the story already follows in the novella. So, if I can add extra 28K out of this, I can keep the mystery of who Maximus’ first lover is until the point it was revealed in the novella–and then add a short flashback there instead of hewing in the old romance. It was one thing I really didn’t want to do for the sake of the word count, because while the past impacts Maximus, the real story lies in the present. It might take more than one draft thou to layer in enough words to get the story to the novel minimum wc.

Yeahhhhh we can’t actually get help for the major project because “the first assignment is your first drat. do NOT submit anything else”. It’s stupid but thems the rules. Apparently

that makes sense! you might be able to find notebooks/notepads like this too. It would be cheaper to just print them if you have you’re own printer, but you can get inspiration for things to add from them

That is so cute. I love that. My mom used to do the same to me. I was always cooped up in my room too.

It sounds like after work or compromising somehow with your hubby seems to be the only option? I don’t really watch TV either and when I do, it has to be something worthwhile like anime or a very small, handful of live action shows. Most of what’s on TV these days is just brain rotting fluff. So I can’t blame you for wanting to make your time more productive - I’m the same way. Well, I hope you figure it out! Both you and your hubby deserve to be happy, to both spend time together, and to also have time to yourselves. I wish you luck! :sunflower:

I received a two comments on a fanfic I’ve been writing, and it’s got me really thinking about how authors censor themselves. I still struggle with how much to hold back or “let it all out” in my writing, but with my original story’s second draft at least, I’ve been trying to go “no holds barred.”

But the comments on my fanfic did discourage me somewhat. It’s based on a Webtoon called Lore Olympus, and Poseidon, the God of the Seas, in my story has killed 7 mortals that had become his queen’s lovers in the past. He regrets it and over the course of his two thousand year old life, has learned to heal/move on, but it’s disturbed these two readers since in the Webtoon, Poseidon is this lovable, goofy character. Meanwhile, in Greek Mythology, Poseidon has had his fair share of rapes/murders, and so it’s a little shocking that someone could be so surprised that a Greek God, considering the original lore, not the Webtoon could gasp! Commit act of wrath!

Granted, the fanfic was meant to be a comedy/trolling of Zeus so maybe it doesn’t quite fit with the “flavor” of the rest? At the same time, while I toned it down a tiny bit, I refuse to remove it because I hate the fact that it seems like some people want to censor my writing? Regardless of whether I have valid reasons for what I wrote, and even expressed that just because an author writes about XYZ doesn’t mean they condone what said characters do, but we’re in an age now where people read, and they assume 1) the MC is supposed to be a likable/hero and 2) if bad stuff happens in the book, then that means author supports bad stuff.

On another note, this reminds me of a book I read called, “The Perfect Child.” One of the most disturbing thrillers I’ve ever read. It’s from two POVs of a married couple who haven’t been able to conceive children, and are thinking of adopting when a seemingly abandoned/severely abused child ends up in the hospital. They agree to foster her. It’s a story that still haunts me years later. The author is a child psychologist I think that specializes in certain mental disorders, and it’s obvious from her writing. By the time you’re done reading this book, you’re not sure if the child is just truly traumatized/mentally troubled, and is therefore violent/even deadly as a result or if she’s possessed by a demon. There’s just enough evidence to support the latter, but also you can’t quite convince yourself the other isn’t possible. The fact that the author could make me emphathize with both the husband, and the wife even when they slowly turn on each other, and one of them descends into “madness” while at the same time, they might be the only sane one that knows this child is evil, I thought that was brilliant.

The people reviewing the book though? One or two stars because it was “violent” including a scene with animal cruelty. And I’m like… THAT WAS THE POINT. If it disturbed/freaked you out, then that means the author did her job. I just… (sigh) Is this what readers are nowadays?

I’m taking active steps to make passive income by using the monster everyone hates: Amazon. My shop is not fully up yet, still some more work required to get it up and running.
We’ll see. I’ll let you guys know if this works at all and if it does, who knows, maybe you’ll join me.

In an ideal world, I’ll be able to use side hustles like this to make enough side income to actually go full time writing at some point in the future. Because I don’t see that happening any other way, and I would really like to give it a solid go because when I don’t write, I’m not happy, and to truly commit myself to writing - not just any writing but my best writing - I can’t have a 9 to 5 job.

I keep looking back through rose-colored lenses to how much I was able to achieve writing-wise when I was unemployed. I think in those 6 months I wrote 400k words? (I wasn’t tracking it so I’m really not sure) And not just any words - epic proportion stories that I’m still getting positive feedback on because my passion showed in what I wrote at that time. It’s hard to have a passion when you can’t commit all your time to it, and with a full time job, this will not change.

But I’ve already accepted that writing doesn’t pay until you have many books to sell (I really don’t think I’m one of those unicorns that would strike it big on the first book). If I could recreate the whirlwind speed of those 6 unemployed months, then I could make those many books happen. But I need to secure my finances to even be able to try this.

So here’s to hoping that I’m not fooling myself and this can actually work for me.

Gosh, I hear you in every word! Though for me it’s more finding time to work on every story for long enough to be happy with its quality, rather than thinking I can sell.

And… almost finished chapter 20. I am sitting at 41.8K. And I am too sleepy to bring it in all the way… but yeah, literally one scene ending and short scene away of finishing Act 2!

So much for sleeping in, heh, gotta do some reading and watch FS, then finish chapter 20. Really wanna finish chapter 20!
