Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

Personally I hate scene breaks, not only in my own books but in books I read, too. So wherever a scene break would go, I just start a new chapter even if that means the chapter is only a few hundred words long. Just a personal preference. ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯

Lol. I personally don’t feel strongly one way or another about scene breaks but they just seem… awkwardly placed. Like the one I put in my previous draft. It’s only the scene break I have and it does not look quite right…

When I come back the story, I’ll probably figure out how to transition between scenes, use it as the start of a new chapter or somewhere in another, or come to the realization that it needs to be deleted… and then I’d have to repurpose the two characters that scene holds for something else :sob:

Why aren’t there painkillers for writing or something?

Both. Whatever is more effective and makes the book more interesting to read goes for me.

I’m falling into the trap of wanting to publish something without professional editing.

I mean, it’s just a novella. There’s no ROI at all that I’m expecting from publishing it.
But at the same time, I don’t want to cut myself short. I already have an awfully bad case of perfectionism. It could be years before I publish my “serious” projects and this novella is my chance to get over that limitation.

On the other hand, releasing a poorly edited book could be a very poor start.

I don’t know, maybe my earlier idea to release it as an audiobook is a better one. I’m doubting my narrating abilities though.

Nowadays, rarely. Most of the time I end the chapter.

But in the past I used to do scene breaks (extra space or a line), mostly to change the pov because it felt like the scenes were too short to count as a chapter or it didn’t feel like enough had happened. :joy:

I think now I’m more conscious of the issue of “does this scene need to exist” and as a result, I don’t need as many scene breaks as I used to. Or maybe my writing style has evolved.

I am doing that now and I never really done that before.
Some chapters call for it while other chapters do not.

I wasn’t planning on writing today but ended up starting to jot down some dialogue and then ended up writing the epilogue :stuck_out_tongue:

I need to still work on it, but it’s kind of almost done now XD I wasn’t going to write at all today. Really.

It’s sounding awesome now.

Sovanna’s epic battle scene against the giant frost beast is going to be awesome.

I did a little bit of writing.
I feel drained, but not so much sleepy.

Staring at the screen might have something to do with it or that fact that I ate a hearty meal and it might be making me sleepy a little.

Either way, I am in and out with my writing which is rather upsetting I suppose.

I think audiobook might be a better bet because there are less of them.

Wrote 2 x chappies for my focus saga and one chapter of a free-form story while watching a show. Looks like I’m getting back into the swing of writing.

Good point. I think editing-wise, it’s also more forgiving with audio. But the speaking voice is important. I’m going to have to practice and then have some people listen to see if it’s at all enjoyable.

I also keep coming back to what I read a while back. This one guy said he sold his book on his own site with a “name your price” strategy and it worked well for him. I might try that too but on my own I’ll never have as much reach as Amazon or whatnot. Then again, if Amazon pays me only 40% of $3.99, that’s not really a big loss of sale.

I received 4 purchases of my audiobook. I guess it helped that the price I had set was free, but it was an AI Audio TL, so I didn’t feel comfortable setting a price to it.

I love that. You call chapters chappies and that is really cute.

Sorry if that seems bizarre.

I really can’t say anything here, except I don’t think you can make it on any website without a huge audience because there is only a very small percentage willing to pay, and that’s what creates initial sales, to get a chance to be noticed. Sort of like with Wattpad, like when people who come with friends audience or TikTok have the initial uplift to break out.

do you mean like, between every scene? because no, that would destroy the flow imo. but if there’s a time skip that doesn’t call for a chapter break, or if there’s something like the POV character drifting in and out of consciousness where having those markers helps indicate that, then yeah.

I am going to ditch my plan.
I wanted to have two chapters per document for Google Docs. Now, I am going to do five chapters per document. So, one document will have chapters 0-4 all together with their parts for each chapter and the next document will have exact same for different chapter numbers.

I want to focus on it better that way. LOL!

That’s really cool that you’re experimenting with this. :open_mouth: I wonder if this only applies to ongoing stories or completed ones too? Can you re-publish the same chapter every day and it still boosts rankings? And do you have to make a change in the file for it to count when you re-publish?

That’s really tough for people who aren’t churning out new chapters daily, unless they write a bunch of chapters ahead of time, and post completed chapters? I do this, but definitely not enough to post a week’s worth every day without catching up to the chapter I’m currently writing. :disappointed:

Don’t let society convince you that your life has deadlines as far as milestones/experiences go. For some reason there’s this weird trend of painting this picture for high schoolers that they NEED to go to college and decide their whole lives/career paths or else DOOM! And then you’re not a “successful adult” if you don’t own a house/car/whatever in your twenties.

First off, as far as the US goes, the economy is rigged so it’s not possible to own a house/car whatever in your twenties unless you’re rich. Can barely afford an apartment in NY for example unless you have a roomie. I know that’s not encouraging, but just know that not everything is on you. That there are external factors that have made things much more difficult vs the 70s where you can work a summer job or something and pay your own tuition to college. Crazy, right?

My college professor also told us it’s okay to change course in life. You’re never STUCK to one thing. He was a professor/successful comic artist at the time, but he said he’d only discovered that passion in his 30s. Some people publish their first books at 50. And so on. It’s never too late to try something new or change your mind.

Ahem, anyway, you do you. Enjoy life. And to be fair, not all of those “classic teen experiences” are worth experiencing haha

Still working on BTTG, and tempted to write a fanfic for a fandom where no fanfiction exists yet. Just a one shot. It’s nice to write stuff that isn’t too serious in between my original stuff. :crossed_fingers:
