In my experience with just posting 1-2 chapters a day of the edited 92 chapters long story (originally finished in 2020) was that most of my reads came from people who follow me, so I would not risk their good will by updating chapters for no good reason. My ranks got a little better, but not by much and never at anything great. While I was updating, I was getting up to 20 individual readers per day. That number fell immediately after finishing updates, with the tail-end circulation of 0-5 readers per day. Here is the curve:
Completed story gets an extra boost from ranks, but how many chapters can you add when it’s completed? And I would advise against marking it complete when it’s not.
In my experience, people adding a book to their own reading list works wonders for discovery especially since my books never rank in major tags so often that’s the only way for them to reach new audience.
That’s really the only way. Also, the only sane way to post regularly.
I’ve always done it backwards, publish as soon as I start writing because I’m always excited about the new project and I want to share my excitement.
But strategically, that’s not the best way.
What I’m doing now is working. It’s a shame though that I’m two years late.
I mean, I was posting this story live during 2021 ONC so it was fairly regular then but it wasn’t in the best shape it could be so in the end it made no difference.
That’s the risk of ONC though.
Btw, today it ranks 705 in Paranormal. ![]()
Two weeks of posting every day.
It got a couple of reading list adds but just 1-3 readers a day so it didn’t really get anywhere.
In good news though, I had a revelation how to fix what was bothering me about the climax. It’s coming together. I’m almost done with the edits.
I can’t get over the fact that I read this manga years ago.

The more I think about it, the sadder and weirded out I get.
Judging by this premise and whatnot, what are your initial thoughts, @NotARussianBot?
At least femcels don’t go hunting mermaid girls.
LOL! ![]()
I am still reeling over the fact that I read this. I mean those girls are batshit insane and pathetically insecure.
I am very tempted to try a novel like this only without these few these:
-
It’s not love related/not focusing on sad girls wanting to a boyfriend.
-
The school mermaids aren’t former teenage human girls.
-
It is not relating to high school.
Sounds fun and crazy, huh?
Extra horrifying
me: writes a bunch of extra chapters to upload during nanowrimo
also me: doesn’t upload any of those chapters
also also me: stops working on that project for an additional 1 + 1/2 months
my brain @ me:

Yup.
At least you have a low chance of getting killed as a mermaid because there aren’t a lot of people with Q names
True.
I also wouldn’t use that method in my version of the story.
This is going to be fun.
Ah-ha! Maybe I can add it into the world of Alagossia as a what-if type thing very separate from the Breakers, but takes part in that timeline!
Glorious!
Finally finished the first draft of my incel novel just a little over a year after starting it. Whew! (♯^.^ღ)
That took for freakin ever. Now to edit it. Argh. __〆(..)
@anon39043209 told me about this femcel manga where teen girls kill mermaids to make the boy they like love them
The evil siren myth updated for the present day? I’m guessing it’s really popular, but all I can say is argh. ><((((o>
The manga is pretty wild and morbid.
The lengths those girls are willing to go to just to get a boy to like them is really…scary.

Not necessarily. Though it could be. But let’s say a chapter starts off at a café and then the characters are gearing to leave, one might scene break to a house or a park or some other location to close off the chapter. That’s essentially what I’ve done. But like you said, it does look like it throws off the pace; it’s awkwardly placed. I admit, I was being lazy by the time I reached that point in the story ![]()
Instead of, like, talking to a boy? Accepting rejection once in a while and moving on. Yeah, sure, hunting mermaids and killing them is sure easier.
![]()
EXACTLY!
Like how desperate can you be to go through that great lengths to get a boy to like you back?
Girl, it ain’t that serious.
I have two writing related things to do while I hold off on The Breakers novel which are:
-
Worldbuilding my fictional planet of Alagossia.
-
Coming up with brand new story idea set in the world of Alagossia that is happening in the same timeline of The Breakers, but has absolutely nothing in common with the plot other than being in the same time line.
I am going to place myself on timer in order to focus then log out of here.
Everything is on track here, I am slowly working my way toward the point in my WIP where I can leave it for the ONC. I also see a need to adjust outline because I wrote something into the emotional state of the protagonist right now vs later. His moment of weakness/wavering at midpoint will need more work to make it real.
