Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

Its really people feindong for the enemeies-to-lovers.

There really isn’t a clear-cut distinction between “something about this person wont leave me alone, so I’m annoyed with their existence” vs “this person is morally repugnant” in that genre, so people tend to go with: “Im not morally confused by this guy, so the character should be fone with it”.

@TheTigerWriter’s is right, you shouldn’t let one singular comment discourage you.

I also want to point out that you having one weakness as a writer does not make you a bad writer. We all play to our strengths. For instance, I struggle sometimes with writing deep and complex characters that are unique in their own way, because I usually prioritise plot and pacing. For you, foreshadowing might or might not be an issue. Analyze the issue, and if there is room for improvement, improve it. Writing is a skill that takes a lifetime to master, and many great writers would probably hesitate to call their writing “perfect”.

idk where exactly to put this but heads up if you’re on wattpad: i’ve had the exact same spam comment from 3 different accounts this week. they are clearly bots, it even says at the start of the comment that it’s an ‘automated message’.

I already reported two: markos780 and markos459 (the third had just a - for a name so j think it got got already). They have pfps with a pride flag with a heart in it on a red/yellow background. If you see any other markos-bots in comment sections I’d like it if you could let me know. I want to pre-emptively report and block.

lol i feel like i made it pretty clear that a man who executed the FL’s entire clan and forced her into slavery would not be the person she falls in love with. at best, she could forgive him but not love him. even if i did a ‘Tale of Yanxi Palace’ plot point (a maid who hated the emperor joined the harem to get revenge on the concubines who forced The Empress, who she saw as a mother, to commit suicide but eventually fell in love with him) the issues are far too great to overcome.

You’re very right. Just this morning another commenter said ‘eh, idk about that, FL hates this man’. They’re having a convo about what could possibly happen.

You would be surprised :joy: I once had a creepy-ass dude continually insist in the comments that the wholesome budding romance between a nurse and the amnesiac man she’d rescued was actually incest…even though I took the time to explicitly clarify that there’s no incest in my story, he kept speculating that the amnesiac man would turn out to be the MC’s father.

So it’s definitely not you. Some people just have weird expectations of certain narratives. I even had someone once say that a love scene had actually been abuse because the characters had an argument after…:woman_facepalming:

Oh, Im sure YOU were. I’m saying that the readers of the genre are morally ambiguous, and that there’s nothing in the tropes that require morality. (Not in their personal morality, but what they allow in a story. And it forces the writer to be the strict one.) Its a problem in a lot of genres.

Its like people have crosswired their rubbernecking for wrecks with their enjoyment of a good story, sometimes. All you can do is make it plain and not veer off into moralizing/soapboxing and wonder at the ones who done lost their marbles.

Its really a weird position to be in.

I tend to explore the ambiguity more than I ought to. Lol

It was on Tapas, too, where people were paying to read my story at the time and I was like…what the hell do I even say anymore?? :joy::joy: Thankfully, another reader eventually ripped him a new one lol

The comment was more than that. It looked like they had no other comment to make. For three chapters, just “OMG THEY LOVE EACH OTHER” like that in all caps  All of them written during dialogue where the characters are directly disagreeing and hating each other.

It wasn’t like “I ship them” which I’m fine with. It was…idk why they were so obsessed with commenting like that. Maybe a troll but at least I got reads and votes

That’s the inportant part.

And fiending is me being…rather dry about it. We have the concept of a Stan because people are going waaay beyond appreciation and 'shipping.

When they start getting to this level of not “reading the room”, Im just glad they aren’t doing sonething that would land then in jail.

Wrote about 700 words so far and decided to split the chapter into two when posting on Wattpad, considering how long its turning out

Still, I’m living for this sequence I’m writing, pretty action-packed!

Passive voice is like the bane of my existence. All those writing tools are always complaining about my passive voice. I still don’t fully understand what passive voice is.

One thing I’ve learned from what few comments that I have received on my WP stuff is it can be a bit of two things. 1, the reader not actually freaking reading. Their attention span is too short/they skim over things and don’t retain complex connections in memory. 2, yes, it can be that you need to drop a few more breadcrumbs/hints as to where the story is going. But let me tell ya, you can be as clear as a window wiped with Windex and there are readers that are still going to miss the entire point/plot etc. lol

Don’t be discouraged. Take every criticism with a grain of salt especially from WP. Also, that reader could just be one of those enemies to lovers trope lovers. I love that trope too but yeah, usually there’s some kind of hint early on that the spark of hatred between two characters can possibly shift. And some characters are not redeemable imo for enemies to lovers. Like if one character murdered your whole family, unless you’re family was abusive/terrible, the surviving character isn’t going to be like, oooh, I suddenly love this person! That’s my opinion though.
