Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

Well, they can’t all make it, but some of them need to because if the alternative to normal publishing is wattpad we are screwed.

@J.L.O Summoning fellow squirrel chaser.

Ask me questions about Max, please help me out. I am trying to focus on him.

Hooookay…

Ring size?
Who would ask him about his ring size?
The dumbest bet he ever took?
How much training has he had with fighting?
Who is he most likely to bail out of jail?
Who is most likely to put him in jail?
If he had 1 day to undo anything he ever did, which day would he pick?

Alicia, duh :stuck_out_tongue:

One from Teo to walk around with a pair of thongs on his head for $10.

Whatever he does in the boxing gym or the normal gym, 1-3 times a week.

Teo/Alicia.

Santiago/Julio. Santiago for fighting him, Julio for killing him.

Sunday because the least people annoy him that day.

Good, write the training session, a jail session. You should have it on file to plop into any given story, anyway. Think about the basics you will need, to add to anything you can get over 10K without it.

Just like the thing you hate, take excerpts from it and make it into a nightmare that Max wakes from. Have stuff ready to go for when you get off your SQUIRREL!

Seriously, treat your ABORT!ABORT!ABORT!s that come from characters that you keep coming back to as material to stuff something that eventually works.

I will do that, but Miguel is also gonna train up Max for a job at his garage. And that’s a good idea. Have extra scenes, never would have thought of that to be honest.

Yes, good idea  Squirell be gone! GOOONE!

Its easier to do with people you keep coming back to. Recycle the failures. You dont get to 6K because you hate the whole thing, you hate the part whre this is supoosed to be THE story, but tbid is all it is.

Popeyes chicken sanwiches (DM video reference on a sec), that’s all most writing is.

Think most fun stories dont have a single plot that it statically follows: it has a lot of dynamics for an overarching story. Many times what I see you doing is chasing a fragment and getting frustrated that its not sustainable.

The sole reason I do that less is because I make sure I have a lot going on or I dont write it all right now. Fragmsnts do fet added where its necessary.

if you’re looking for new perspectives on act structure check out the Chinese four act structure. i’m using it because my story is a Chinese novel. when i started writing my book i kept running into a wall because i was STUCK with the 3 act structure and it didn’t feel like any of the C-dramas i loved to watch!

when i read that article everything made so much more sense.

Up to 4.6k words in the new wip, still having trouble figuring out a fitting title for it
Got some ideas jotted down, but none so far really “call out” to me just yet

Maybe the title will show itself while I write :woman_shrugging:

I spent several hours hour last night researching Roman taverns and Thermopoliums to figure out what was going on there, what was on the menu and what they looked like on the inside.

It wasn’t until the third hour that I remembered I have been to Rome, Pompeii and Herculaneum and took photos and made notes on these exact things because I would need them for this specific book

Did it bother you that you forgot?

I would like to take a look at that. I’ve never really been interested in being paid, per se, but still.

My brain is never gonna think in terms of novels, so I shouldn’t force it to. It hates me for it, and it’s gonna rebel anyway. It should just be sections, and chapters. Break it all down, further. Yeah?

I’ve been saying that.

Good idea.

Maybe I can handle it more?

I think the ONC Novella is about your sweet-spot. If you think of a 3 arc story as 3 serial novellas, you have a 60K novel, but you have to think separately, for that…and it wouldn’t be a traditional 3-act, anyway.

Yeah, I think that I wrote ATL quite well, and am satisfied with it cause I didn’t have to stretch his story out at all, and it was a character intro of sorts.

Yeah, and I even split the Rickteo novel into 4-5 parts and it wasn’t a traditional 3 act structure because that breaks my brain when I try and tell it that way. IDK why but it does.
