Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

Grumpy, weird, middle aged men are the most underrepresented group in modern fiction, but I’m here to partially fix that

Finished chapter 13 of part 1, moving onto chapter 14, part 2 the middle of it all!

I feel like part 1 could’ve been more. Trying not to sweat it too much as I am working on the rough draft.

Where have you been? How’s it going? You, life, and your writing?

Don’t go into detail if you don’t want to.

Nice to see you back.

Nice to see you too! Just been busy. I’m moving to Quebec in a couple months for university so I’ve been drowning in work and preperations lol.

Writing’s going slower than I want it too, idk why I’m having such a hard time with my current wip but I decided to work on it until the 23rd of this month and then switch to a different wip.

How’ve you been? How’s writing?

I’ve been doing so great and it’s amazing.

Writing is going great! Started a YouTube channel which is up to seven videos! I’ve also been properly diagnosed with autism and ADHD!

That’s all

Is the idea of moving also causing you to not have the right head space for the story?

hey that’s great! what’s your channel about?

oof audhd is a beast but it’s good to have diagnoses.

eh, maybe. I think I’m more affected by the stuff I’ve been doing to prepare. I work 2 jobs (I’m at work rn lol) and moved back home to save money. And while I’m deeply grateful to my parents for letting me live with them, sharing a living space is kinda wearing me down and there’s not really anywhere I can go to be alone and chill out since this town is a really small everyone-knows-everyone kind of place.

also ngl I’ve been wasting a lot of time doomscrolling. But this week I deleted instagram and tiktok and restricted youtube so hopefully that helps

So, I need to come up with a derogatory word against a certain fictional race of people. The word only comes up in dialogue, and the person who says it is scolded for discrimination. There is then a discussion about discrimination and how some words have evolved to being mean words.

I looked up a list of ethnic slurs to learn about where they came from, so that I could make my own. Sometimes it’s from skin tone, beliefs (religious or non-religious), or what the people were wearing (there was a group called by the name of their garments). But sometimes it was from being poor or rich, or living in a certain place or having a certain job (like working on the farm in the south). So many slurs around the world are, unfortunately, aimed at the black community.

Made me realize they’ve really had it hard everywhere :grimacing:

In my story, the race of people have such white, pale, almost bloodless-looking skin, so I first thought it would be something related to skin tone. Since there is some belief that vampires exist, I thought the slur could be “vampires”. Like, “Look at those vampires. I bet they drink blood for breakfast.” But, I don’t want the reader to think they’re actually vampires. There are no vampires in this story.

I also thought that maybe because they live in a cold, snowy place, they might often wear scarves around their necks. Maybe the scarves are always very colorful and a statement of cultural pride, but people from the outside have taken to calling them “the scarves” in a derogatory way. So, taking their pride and using it against them (which has been done in real life, unfortunately).

Then I had the idea of using their characteristic features. This group’s females especially have very intense eyes and downturned eyebrows that make them look serious or angry. And in their home country, that’s seen as beauty. But outside, maybe…“tense brow”. Like, “What are you looking at tense brow?” Then maybe “tense brow” changes over time into “tinsbo” or something.

I could use both the scarves and tense brow, but I also thought it would be confusing for the reader even though it’s natural for there to be many

Or maybe, I can come up with their word for their scarves and have the other races use it against them. Like I said, when I looked up ethnic slurs some of them were just using the words for certain articles of clothing. This isn’t a real example, but it’s like if you called Japanese people like me, “the kimonos”, or something like that.

Hmm

Bloodless might suggest pale skin yet not mean vampires…? Or you could call them something related to colors, like snowballs or lily-whites or eggs or blanched or anemic.

Some other possibilities:

bleach
bone
chalk
paleface
colorless
powdery

There are probably many more, but I’d have to think harder, and you know I’m allergic to that. (>‿◠):v:
