Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

Win: Writing isn’t nearly as hard as it used to be. Just the normal amount of hard.

Loss: I am currently so busy for the next month and a half the only time I have to write is during my 3 15 minutes breaks at work and am so worried I’ll lose steam by the time my schedule frees up. Which means I might get like 500words a day, maybe 5 days a week.

Win: I’m very determined that in response to this, I’ll be doing NaNoWriMo again this year. It’s extremely unlikely that’ll reach the 50k. I barely hit it last time, and I was unemployed writing like it was my full-time job. But still worth a shot and nice way to meet cool people to do sprints with in my time zone.

I’m going to make Inside the Chaos an Alagossian story.

It would make me feel better to work on other stories set in Alagossia.

So, Project Succession is going to be on pause because I really want to focus on other stories.

So I decided that if I can’t decide where to start Pinti’s story, I’ll start it everywhere

As long as people can follow the story, I can do whatever I want

Share: I’m already sixteen chapters deep into Eragon at the time I’m writing this. I can definitely see why my ex was reminded of it when he read Blood Will Tell, and reading it has helped me with writing inspiration! There are a few things that I already like about the book, and while I don’t want to copy it, it has certainly helped me with figuring out how to shape my story.

I also may or may not have teased an online friend for starting A Song of Ice and Fire ahead of Lord of the Rings. He may or may not have text-screamed at me, yelling that the Winds of Winter would be finished and that he would “throw hands” with G. R. R. Martin’s corpse if that ended up not being the case. That was hilarious.

And this, my friends, is why I almost never start investing my time and emotions in a series that’s incomplete :skull:

Ask: While I know there are self-published authors who’ve taken books off Wattpad before publishing them, are there any folks here who’ve kept the same story on both Wattpad and Amazon or other platforms? And I mean keeping the story on Wattpad in full, not giving out free samples of their published book.

This is still a long way out for me, but I really don’t want to take books off Wattpad if I can help it. My plan is to keep the very first draft on Wattpad and self-publish the final draft. I don’t care about the money I could make from self-publishing—I just want to get my story out there to as many readers as possible.

Progress: I’ve published Chapter LIV! I managed to keep the chapter to around 3K words instead of longer than that, woohoo  and I also ended the chapter satisfactorily, as in, it’s not as big of a cliffhanger as the ends of some other chapters. I’m once again excited for my story’s direction and how people will react to it.

So in LIV, we get another interaction between Edin and Damon, which happens while the former is at work. And the seeds of more questions are planted as Damon implies that the Illenræns mistreated their mother. Then in the second half—or third, rather—we start a tour of the city’s archives, where public records are also stored.

I am so hyped. The next chapter isn’t as hard to write now, especially now that I know what exactly to put in it. I’ll have Edin going through his mother’s records, asking more about his past, and his conversation at night with Damon. This is going to be so juicy.

I might have to write another chapter from Arden’s POV soon, though. It’s been quite a while since that last happened. The question is how I’m going to do that.

Laine and Aria Nichols (avadel on WP) and Crystal Scherer have done this! In Scherer’s case she keeps either rough or semi-polished drafts on Wattpad, while the polished final drafts are on Amazon.

Not sure whether avadel went with a similar approach, but they do have a duology available on both sites. I believe the published versions have extra content.

Yup! I only have one story on Wattpad and it has close to 30k reads now so I don’t want to take it down, but I also sell it on Amazon for 99¢ – the very same version. I figure it might be worth it to some readers to pay a pittance just to read it on their Kindle or phone instead of having to read it on Wattpad. It’s not enrolled in Kindle Unlimited, though.

I am still working on Project Succession, but I am also trying to work on Project Chaos as well.

I need to work on Project Red at some point.

I am thinking that I am going to work on three stories at once.

:raised_hand: that’s me. Hi, hello. Both my published books are up in full on Wattpad. Couldn’t tell ya if it effects my sales either way because, I don’t make any :stuck_out_tongue: and I don’t care about it. Definitely more people read my books on Wattpad though.

I roughly picked out which parts of my story will be chapter 1s.

Yes.

Chapter 1s. Plural. Because why not?

Needing to really flesh out Alagossia and not just while I write.
I want to have things set in stone so that I won’t have to change or add things I make up on the spot.

Thank you guys answering! It does make me feel better about where to go with my book, even though it’s super far out in the future.

I guess it’s not much of an issue if it’s not on Kindle Unlimited (and Kindle Select, unless they’re the same thing?). However, now I’m wondering if having the rough draft on Wattpad will affect eligibility for Kindle Unlimited. The overall story is going to be the same but I do plan to put it through three or four more drafts before I consider self-publishing it.

I was thinking if there can be a book like House of Leaves, there can be a book with multiple first chapters as long as the stuff in those chapters is necessary to the story. There’s no rule for a book to have only one beginning.

I really need to multitask stories because focusing on one is irksome to me.

Ms Apex on Wattpad is at 6k but that took me years so it feels weird

Mostly I am thinking of the symbolism of The Tower in Tarot.

I’ve been thinking about one long novel series to write in a similar vein to Tower of God, One Piece, The Wheel of Time, and others like it.

I really want to write something like that.

I’m going back writing by hand and taking my time as I do it.

So, that’s the plan for me.
