I’ve finished chapter 2 of Project Succession.
I shall start chapter 3 tomorrow.
on this the final day of november, I will attempt to write.
I’m LOVING writing in first person. This feeling that Project Succession has given me is something that I truly needed. I miss this feeling. I wish every story I work on gave me the same good feeling that Project Succession gives me.
I’m going to be sad when I finish the book series.
How would you insert backstories/flashbacks into a story based around character development?
they don’t have to be whole chapters, right? It could be a few paragraphs, something like:
He remembers it clearly, like it was yesterday. The year was 1986, and it was the week after this 26th Birthday. Edwina had been the guest of honor… (etc)
Or even a reference like:
He hadn’t changed much in 17 years. Except for his waistline. To him, he was still the same larger-than-life character who’d waltzed into his studio looking for a day’s wage.
Pretty much. You don’t necessarily need a whole chapter dedicated to backstory. Especially if there are real-time events happening, and you don’t want to disrupt the flow/ momentum of the story.
(Though I personally have pages and chapters of backstory/ flashbacks. Artistic liberty of fragmentary novels baby!! I aim to disrupt the story and frustrate and alienate the reader)
Now I am done with chapter four for Project Succession and I’ve reached over 15k.
I’m beat!
I’ve for sure read some really good random flashbacks in the middle of chapters or as beginnings that lead into the circumstances of a chapter! The worlds your oyster!
I’ve hit a slump on my story. It’s so close to done but it’s in a really awkward spot and I’m just not super inspired right now. It’s also looking like it’s going to potentially be a lot shorter than I had in mind. But…i might finish this soon like…dang.
I am so tired today. Taking a break from job seeking so I can check out scribophile again. Might be able to get some eyes on my poetry chapbook. I think I abandoned it because you can post work for others to critique based on karma points which you get when you critique other people’s work. But the points don’t necessarily match the volume of work so you can critique a super long chapter versus a short poem and still get the same number of points? So it can be a lot of work across several people’s posts just to be able to post ONE thing up for critique.
But it’s been a while, so I’ll take a glance. ![]()
I finished chapter 5 of Project Succession.
I’m exhausted.
I’m done with writing chapter 6 for Project Succession.
