Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

Taking a break on my prequel novel to edit my poetry chapbook. After getting feedback, I realized that I needed to update the description so it’s clearer who my target audience is. It’s not poetry anyone can jump into and understand, though people are welcome to. While some might say this might narrow down my audience too much, I realize generalizing it too much is more risky. If I have a better chance of the right readers finding it, even if that audience “isn’t big”, then that’s fine. I’d rather have a few passionate readers who resonate with my work than have to change my work to satisfy the masses. No thanks lol.

It’s ready to go live, just waiting to get a better book cover. :crossed_fingers:

I have to outline and write chapter summaries for Project Succession.
That means I have to redo the fifth draft after I’ve finished outlining.

So, this current version of Project Succession needs to take a pause.

I’ve started a new project. I was deliriously sick with flu when I started so I don’t know if I want to even check the first chapter. Once again, it feels like this is a passion project too niche to sell, but the last time I thought that I created my best seller, so…

I just want to write something without much plot… and post it on Wattpad lol

Dang, been a while since I’ve posted an update here. Without further ado…

Rant: Not really related to the act of writing, per se, but it’s related to the writers’ meetups I go to on Mondays.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been attending a writers’ meetup every Monday at this tea bar near me for a few months now. It’s a great event and I’ve made some good friends through this so that’s why I go, but outside of that I don’t really drop by the tea bar. Some things you must know are that the tea bar closes at 10PM every night except on Sundays, that it advertises itself as a spot for night owls, and that I’ve consistently stayed till just before the store closes (so I’d pack my things at around 9:50-ish and then leave by 9:55-ish).

After the most recent Monday write night, I stayed behind as I usually did. It was just me and this other girl a few tables to my left. I was doing stuff on my laptop and she was doing something with her notebook. One of the staff, this bald man with glasses, swung by and said they were close to closing. The other customer and I checked our phones and were like, okay, we still have time, it’s only around 9:15.

Then at around 9:40-ish, the same dude stormed into the room and said: “You both have to leave now.”

The girl and I exchanged confused looks. She nicely asked, “Do you guys close at 10?”

The guy rudely replied, “We close when I say we close.” Then he talked about how all the other customers had already left and he wasn’t feeling that well, so he wanted to close the shop early.

We didn’t argue after that. We just packed our things while exchanging glances, and when we walked out the door, we just went, did he just kick us out?

Look, I get that work isn’t fun and it sucks to do it while you’re not feeling at your best, but at the same time there’s no excuse for the tone he used. I’ve worked in food service for 2+ years and worked all kinds of shifts, including closing shifts which lasted until 11PM. Hell, I’ve even worked shifts while on 2 hrs of sleep. Yet at the campus cafeteria we didn’t kick people out until more than 15 mins had elapsed after closing time, and even then we gave gentle reminders. No matter how sucky things were or how angry I was, I never took things out on a customer. In fact, I’m sometimes surprised by how nice and approachable I turn out because inwardly I’m often in a state of rage.

The other girl has also worked a service job, in retail specifically. She brought up about how when she worked in Macy’s, they couldn’t just shoo people out the way the guy did even while the store was closing. There was no excuse for rudeness.

And get this: we were both regulars at the tea bar. Hell, I find their drinks mid at best—and tried many that were downright awful—but still ordered something every time I went, because I knew I was going to spend a lot of time there and wanted to support a small business. Sometimes I even order multiple things if I’m staying there longer than usual. I was even considering buying some of their stuff as gifts for friends.

Well they’re never seeing another cent from me.

I’ve talked about this with my write night friends and they both agreed that the staff member was rude. That was also when I found out that both of those friends practically never order at the tea bar and just show up to write night without getting a drink. Looks like I’ll be following them, because I do like spending time with fellow writers, but I just can’t be bothered to give them any more money.

I’m not mad about them closing 20 mins earlier than their posted closing time without warning. I’m mad about how they went about it.

While on one of my hot chocolate runs—those who follow my food thread know—I dropped by this café called Chiqueolatte that usually closes at 7PM. However, at 6PM, one of the staff approached me and informed me that they were closing and that I had to go. I was confused and asked if their closing time was changed, since Google said it was 7PM. He replied that they usually close at 7PM, but that night they had a private event so they had to close an hour early. I then said I would be out immediately and just needed to pack my things, and he was understanding.

Right before I left, he and another staff member asked me if I’d like a free strawberry waffle dessert. Since they had to close early, they also had to cancel an order that someone else wasn’t able to pick up on time. I gladly took it, and I also asked if they had a bag to help carry it, and he happily got me one!

So I walked out earlier than I planned because they closed an hour early, but I was still happy, because hey, they went about it nicely and even gave me a free treat.

Just makes last night’s incident all the more infuriating.

I forgot who else in here has worked in the service industry before, but if you have (or even if you haven’t), I’d love to hear your thoughts on the above

Share: There’s a reader on Wattpad who not only binged all the books in my YA fantasy series and all the chapters of my current writing project, but is also re-reading the latter to leave comments  it’s honestly one of the best things to see this holiday season :face_holding_back_tears: what did I do to deserve such a kind reader? :sob:

Progress: I’ve uploaded 59 chapters of Blood Will Tell to date, and I’m close to the end of Act II! Unfortunately I won’t be able to finish it before 2025 ends, but hey, at least I managed to cross 150K words. I might’ve even touched 160K.

Oh, and exciting news, but I also finally decided to resume writing the third book of my YA fantasy series! Yes, I’ll be tackling two books at once. They’re very different but that’s the fun part :joy: hopefully I’ll be able to make decent progress on both next year!

Yeah, no, you’re right. Even if he wasn’t feeling well, communication skills. If it’s his place, he’s free to say, “Hey, I’d like to close early, would you guys mind packing it up so I can close it down?” And most sane (emphasis on the sane bc I also get we have a lot of wack jobs out there) people will happily oblige. If the closing time is not as advertised, and you’re a regular who knows when the place usually closes, and he just refers to it as “closing” then there was context he did not properly provide, and expected you to telepathically pick up. Communication skills.

I’d be mean and leave a bad Google review about his communication skills. If you’re not planning to ever go back. :grimacing:

Also, yay! It’s awesome to have such an invested reader/fan.

My negative feedback cycle continues

Doesn’t want to edit while writing → not wanting anyone to see it until it’s done and edited → Lack of feedback/positive reinforcement contributing to burn out and feeling dissuaded → never finishes story → stops writing → finds time to write again → doesn’t find time to work on fixing the problem → repeats cycle

Ah, the ADHD perfectionism that contributes to executive dysfunction, welcome friend! Here are some sayings that have helped me get past that (writing-wise).

“Make it exist first. Make it good later.”
“Perfection is the enemy of progress.”
“Slow motion is better than no motion.”
“Stop comparing your behind the scenes to someone else’s highlight reel.”

You can also try tackling in smaller pieces. Would it feel better to write a chapter (or a few), edit them where maybe they’re not “perfect” per say, but at least presentable enough that you don’t feel like it was written by a drunk toddler who knows multiple languages and got them mixed up? And then get editing/feedback on those smaller pieces instead? This helps keep dopamine and momentum going. Big picture things can always be tackled later or when you have enough pieces that you’ve somewhat edited and are okay with sharing.

Long story short, you operate on novelty and happy chemicals. That first burst gets you hyperfocused and running but once that runs out, you need something else to keep you going. Having feedback or supporters who look forward to your writing or people you can talk to about it helps a lot!

You can also use AI to assist if you’re comfortable, just turn off the setting where it’s going to “learn” from your work, and be careful. You want it to help you brainstorm or look things up like you would in Google, or to sanity check certain things, but you want to avoid it writing for you or possibly putting ideas into your head. I use Grammarly for grammar and punctuation stuff. AI to ask it things like, “Explain concussions, levels of severity, and how long recovery is, if possible,” or “How do mob fronts work in real life?” Stuff that like haha

You can also wait till you get so fed up, apathy kicks in and you just #yolo. That’s what I’m doing with my poetry chapbook. I’ve been convinced I need to edit it and do all these things, but so many years have passed and I got so annoyed that I’m stuck, that I was like screw it, there are worst things out there, I’m gonna publish this crap.

P.S. I’ve made a lot of assumptions here about you, so let me know if I’m totally off the mark. I hope I was helpful and if not, ignore me! I know what it’s like to have a lot of pride in what you create and you don’t want to expose others to the mess.

Writing my prequel novel is still a steady process. It feels slow for some reason, writing it I mean, not the pacing. And then I was reading a book on my kindle last night and observing what was happening versus how far I was in the book. A lot had happened, but when I checked, it said I was only 23% into the book. That made me feel better. Maybe that’s normal then? :woman_shrugging:

Also HAPPY NEW YEAR! :tada:

I didn’t leave a bad review on Google but I did update my Beli review to a negative one :joy: my Beli profile is private though so it’s only my friends who’ll see.

I did check their Google reviews though to see if other people experienced something similar. I came across this one reply and just went :grimacing:

That last sentence, yikes.

Thank you for the validation

It truly is! Now I can’t wait to get a full-time job so that I can free up my time reading and supporting other writers instead of grinding on LinkedIn, Indeed, or Handshake :joy::sob:

Oh wow, yeah, the place is definitely owned by a nasty person. Eek. Well, hopefully karma does what it should, I guess. :woman_shrugging: What a missed opportunity to provide awesome customer service. It sounds like the owner is saying, “Don’t ask me questions, just scan the QR codes,” and it’s like 1. Not everyone is tech savvy enough for that and 2. If someone is asking YOU, the owner of the establishment, for recommendations, shouldn’t you know your own menu enough to be like, oh hey, this and that are my favorites? Like, that’s how you advertise, isn’t it? He could’ve recommended his best product and didn’t because he’s a jerk.

Project Red has gotten a new plot that isn’t too new when I think about it. It’s just a little bit over a decade when I thought about it.

I’ve been writing a lot and not getting too caught up with chapters after writing them. Is it a miracle? A phase? The world is ending? We’ll found out in time.

It’s starting to get exciting. There’s a crime that two mob heirs are trying to solve, you know, the two heirs that have “no feelings” for each other, and we’re at the point where all of the things that my heiress has been juggling is all going to come crashing down. In a way where she has no choice but to learn to trust, allow herself to be vulnerable, and ask for help. Wonder who she’s going to ask? And don’t worry. Male love interest has problems of his own. Things are complicated. :stuck_out_tongue:
