Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

Thank you, Gundam Seed!

I appreciate you reviving an old idea I had decades ago.

Thanks for the tips! I’m happy to report that I think it went pretty well  they say it’s a good sign if the interview goes on for longer than it’s scheduled for—I was told that the interview would probably be about 1.5 hours long, but it ended up going for 3 hours instead :skull: I didn’t even realize until the very end, when they thanked me for their time and told me that they’d let me know next week.

The company seems really good and they take pride in their lack of turnover and how forgiving they are of mistakes. One of my interviews mentioned—albeit in a previous round—that there were times he cost the company money, and they still kept him around, so there’s less pressure to be perfect.

I’m really hoping I get the role :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:

Share 1: I may or may not have gained a new reader in real life :eyes: one of my friends landed in Chicago a few days ago for an internship, so we spent all of Sunday hanging out and exploring the city before he starts work. I mentioned that I go to write nights on Mondays, so he asked me if I was working on any book, then I replied that I was, in fact, working on a book. He asked me to send him the link, which I did, so hopefully he’ll read it sometime :eyes: I’d love to see his reactions and hear his theories lol

Share 2: Unrelated to writing, but today I heard back from the company that interviewed me last week. They want to move me forward and schedule a meeting with their VP this week! It’ll be a 20-30 min call on Microsoft Teams. I don’t want to jinx myself, but a couple of my engineering friends think they’re ready to extend an offer :eyes:

Wish me luck for this week! :four_leaf_clover: @rachelsfloetry @TheTigerWriter @alcoholandcaffeine

Why is this how I find out that Texas used to be a whole REPUBLIC until 18-freakin-46??? Every day’s a school day, I guess lol

they also are so proud of themselves that they have a year dedicated to Texas history in school :person_facepalming: :joy:

Wait, so they won the war of independence against Mexico? When was that exactly? How long before 1846?

1836-1846

Brief ten years, but if you think about it, if you were born in 1836 in Republic of Texas, you would be 10 years old in 1846 and could have probably retained enough memory to say you were born in the Republic of Texas

That’s kinda cool, for, ya know, story fodder XD

That I already knew but I had no idea they’d gone so far as to proclaim themselves a republic :joy:

Yeah, but if you think about it, the US annexed them less than 20 years before the Civil War broke out… I didn’t look much further into it, but if you came of age as a proud “Texian” you very probably ended up a powerful Confederate… I also happen to prominently feature a Texan rancher in my 1890s historical fiction who most probably was born in the Republic of Texas then became a Confederate soldier :see_no_evil_monkey:

There you go!

Now you can say that as part of his profile, if you want to

Very, very probably

I think I’m going to! I have his birth year somewhere, pretty sure it was in the early 1840s haha. It’s going to fit really well with the fact that he ends up marrying a Union Army volunteer nurse… heh

Share: Something weird happened at write night earlier this week. A new person joined our table on Monday, which I wouldn’t normally be opposed to, but he gave off a strong salesman-type vibe. For context, this is how write nights generally work:

  • 7:00–7:10 PM: The host will read out a prompt, and participants will have ten minutes to write a snippet based on that prompt.
  • 7:10–7:30 PM: After the ten minutes are up, participants will gather into groups to share what they’ve written, discuss writing, and talk about anything else they wish.
  • 7:30–8:30 PM: A “silent writing hour” occurs in which people write and conversation is discouraged, though people can do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t disrupt the quietness like watching live sports or playing bootleg Monopoly with headphones on.

Now this newbie joined our table just when the prompt was read aloud. After the ten minutes were up, we introduced ourselves. So this new guy was talking about how he was getting into fiction writing and had recently completed a draft of a novel for the first time, yay!

Then he started talking about his novel for quite a while. And he started talking about how his new draft was “more structurally sound” than the previous draft. And then he started talking about other people were praising his ideas and his writing. Internally I was like, uh, okay, is that all you want to do here?

Anyway, the remaining three of us got to share what we wrote for the prompt of the night. My blond friend, as usual, absolutely killed the prompt. I did just fine. Then when it was the new guy’s turn to share, he asked us if he could read out a scene from the draft he had been working on, then mentioned that there were thousands of words of context behind it. None of us opposed.

Then he read his stuff aloud. It wasn’t bad, but he also kept on talking himself up and his snippet didn’t quite match my expectations :sob: and he also kept on talking about his story after that. I could be wrong, but I think he came to write night just to sell people his story :skull: I mean I want people to read my work too, but there’s a line between sharing and over-promoting.

My blond friend thought it was weird too. Anyway, I hope he doesn’t join our table next week :grimacing:

Progress: I’m slowly making more progress with Blood Will Tell—I’ve added about 500 words to Chapter LXVI, and I’m starting to figure out how exactly Act II will end.

Have you ever tried to write something, but you’re frustrated by it?

So, many times, especially recently.

Even if you research it, and you know how it’s gonna be. And how you want it to turn out
