Struggling Writers’ Daily Den: rant, share, complain, ask, daily progress thing (Part 2)

what that sucks! WTF. I dont blame you though. It can be costly but I suppose the rewards of full control are worth it in the end

Mine did that; they went through some drama and basically dropped a ton of people already published with them, got half way through my editing after being told I was still being published. Then woke up one morning to “we’re not publishing English books anymore. Bye.”
Then an hour later after I pointed out they’d paid for editing, made me do the editing etc, they quickly said “Oh we’ll do it again”
Then more head honchos left, delaying my book for the fourth time.
Still getting no social media promo from them (apparently they’ll be in contact with me “soon” to sort something out) nor have they updated their website (they’ve had 2 releases on the same day yesterday and no site change to reflect)

Part of me never wanted this after they mucked me about, but I’m tied in unless I want to pay to get out. I’m just hoping it opens doors with bigger agents or something idk. It’s a good thing to have under my belt I suppose

The whole industry needs a change. It treats authors like cash cows and I hate it

Waah. That’s horrid. Here I was hoping I was one of the rare cases with my horror stories. I hope your story is able to recover and earn success.

Yeah, it’s an erratic industry, and most of the big houses are becoming more tech driven these days. And you’d think you’d be safe with big names, but because of dynamic changes in economical environments, they can be the most cutting and ruthless with their decisions. They don’t hesitate to cut what they think is their losses.

It’s a shambles. Yeah, I hate the cash cow mentality, too. And the laziness of not wanting to invest in their authors. They’ll only do so when thousands of people have loved a book enough to make it top ranking. It’s like they almost sign on authors on whim and to make them cannon fodder to increase their book catalog.

Big houses have a tendency to change editors frequently. So, I was always working with different names and was having to repeat the rapport.

I contracted two works with media giants previous years and none of them have done anything with them. I do admit one of them features the book on the homepage occasionally, but the side of the business I was signed too is so small, and I think underwent a company change within the parent. It’s now just running and nothing else. Well, I think the other was just taking any contract that was set back to them. Even if it was written in crayon. I’m being salty here.

And I wonder why I’m salty about book publishers :joy:

Of course. Just showing a quick way to make sure there is a stake doesn’t mean there isn’t a way to mess up a system. There doesn’t exist a system that won’t be broken.

I have a slight obsession that I not that concern with or maybe I am. LOL!
I love watching desk setup aesthetics on YouTube. Why I love watching videos like that?
I haven’t the faintest idea and I guess I am alright with that.

Far as writing related things, I am going to have to redo chapters one and two, but only after I TAKE FRICKING NOTES for the novel and do what I am supposed to do.

So, I am going to take some notes then start on the chapter summaries then the chapters itself.

I made a poll to select a title for my novel and it appears that the title that I was hoping wouldn’t get votes…got votes.

I don’t know anymore.

Lesson learned?

Is it though? I mean all I learned is that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I guess the old title works, but it was just lacking to me.

Just be careful. There are a lot of scammy new sites popping up. Check their terms to ensure the rights your work remain with you.

It’s a risk though because if your book doesn’t do well, it can hurt your chances later.
But I get it that you’re stuck. I’d recommend you to do your own advertising. You can’t rely on them to put enough effort. In the end, you care about your book whereas it’s insignificant to them.

Who is folding laundry with a totally interrupting toddler? The woman who won’t fold any of it while people are sick and so is backed up with about 3 weeks of laundry…

That would drive me crazy.

How can I write and strong and supportive wife in a story without her being overpowered? I want the husband and the wife to be seen equally but have different strengths.
