The I-need-money-plot.

You know these stories where the main character needs loads of money for whatever reason, good or bad.

Are you currently working on or have you worked on a story where the MC needs to make serious cash for whatever reason?

It can be to make ends meet to live the rich and fabulous life to help their loved ones or to fight to survive. The point is your MC need money and comes from a place where they had little to none of. Maybe your MC was once wealthy, life turned their world for a loop forcing them to struggle financially. They find work to get back the life they once had or other reasons. Maybe your character is struggling in constant poverty trying to provide for themselves and/or their loved ones, doing whatever they can to make it so they won’t be on the streets. Or maybe the character has a boring and decent paying job wishing they had a job that pays great that comes with a great life. Regardless of the reasons for them wanting money, lots of money, the point is the MC wants money which is the motivation for the plot.

Also, the motivation for money makes sense until the character realizes that yes the money is still important until it’s not that much. That is another factor. Though your story or someone else’s story won’t always have that.

My Turn:
Yes, I do have a few stories like that.

Project Venomous is basically this because my female MC is a fallen heiress who wants to live her old rich life again. The girl is willing to do anything to make the life she once had hers again, even resorting to murder.

Project Succession is this way too, though for a different reason. Aeris wants to make money as a special type of Knight to survive after her traumatic past and losing a dear friend. She learns about her royal heritage, but she still wants to make money while still being a Knight.

There are some older stories that fit this type of plot that I need to think further back, too far back.

What do you think? Are you working on something like this? Have you written a story like that? Will you decide to do that at any point in your writing life?

Thoughts and feelings?

Yes.

The Facade of Quad in Nimrod has three characters that want money which they think means success in life. It was fun writing extremely greedy people who will do anything to get rich.

My female MC is just like them.

Aeris is a bit different, but still greedy in a way.

Nope. Currently working on a kingdom fic where darn near everyone’s a royal or noble, so no one needs money. (Except a destitute maid in Greece, forcing her to prostitute herself to Lord Byron, or an unreasonable facsimile thereof. But she’s just a peripheral character.)

I’ve written poor characters in the past, but making money was never the main focus of the story. They always had bigger problems. But I agree that money’s an excellent motivator for a plot! ☜(ˆ▿ˆc)
