What are the spell books, grimoires, and/or eldritch tomes like in your world?

Come back when you have something, okay?

I’ve got different types of spellbooks in my world. The advanced ones aren’t easy to come by because they are closely guarded by royal courts, universities and temples.

Possession of spellbooks are highly regulated — you’d need an official permit to borrow or own an advanced one. Magic is learned experientially under the tutelage of Masters, and the most basic form of magic may not require spellbooks.

Magic is essentially a dialogue between the forces of the universe. It is done with a combination of hand gestures and spoken words. There are two main types of spellbooks:

  • Aetheric tomes - teaches hand gestures to communicate with Souls.
  • Syrric tomes - teaches the spoken language of the celestial realm to communicate with Destiny.

Notable books:

  • On the Nature of Aethurges - Less a spellbook than an academic inquiry. A compendium of fundamental magic and practices, both Aetheric and Syrric. Available to the public. Useful for simple magic

  • The Zofenalion - A religious text reflecting on divine illumination and transcendence. Studied by advanced magicians as theoretical magic.

  • The Syrosmia - A Syrric spellbook that teaches the user to influence weather and tides. Only one copy closely guarded by the Emerian temple and only used by specialised weather-mages.

  • The Medovian Tomes - An Aetheric compilation of advanced combat magic. Used by combat-mages. Highly guarded by the Medovian Court but there are multiple black market copies.

  • The Book of Holy Movements - A legendary Aetheric tome that teaches the user to jump from body to body, and control Souls. Lost in the deserts.

Honestly, this thread makes me think I should have more magical books in my stories. There’s so much you can do with a special, magical book. Idk why I never think of this :stuck_out_tongue:

I THOUGHT OF ONE!

wait no

I THOUGHT OF TWO!

The Chronicles and the Time Magic Tome

So, the Chronicles is basically a book of old myths, stories and legends. If you really read into it, it does actually contain instructions on how to use Old and Forbidden Magic but, thankfully, there are very few people who have actually noticed this. If they’ve experimented with it, they’ve been very careful because there are no records of any of this.

The Time Magic Tome is an instruction manual said to be written by Time itself to instruct their chosen Vessel on how to use their power. It’s essentially Time Magic 101 tbh. It contains information on what their power is, how it can be used, how it shouldn’t be used, the dangers of it, etc. I’m still developing the ins and outs of this one because it doesn’t show up until a spinoff series

I shall come back tomorrow.

NOTE:

And with everyone else’s comments, I shall tackle them either tomorrow or when I can.

Hopefully it is sooner than later so that I can add my own ideas for grimoires and such.

Thanks for commenting, guys!

It depends on the story. I don’t dwell on them if they’re not pertinent to the plot, but I’ve got one where the whole story IS the book.

Tell me, when you get the chance.
Sorry for the late reply.

I haven’t finished it or looked at it in quite a while. I was mainly going to use it as a system to rate/paint the combat skills of the species with a very broad brush.
