What to do when you're writing a novel series that has more than three books?

I am talking about if the story needs more than three books. I’ve been thinking about Red Reign because I first had five books then it went to nine to ten books of the novel series. Right now, I am still writing the first book, chapter 3. Yet this is important for context for the series overall.

The problem is how much needs to be mentioned in five or ten books. It’s an epic novel series, in my mind. Though in my mind, Red Reign might be stretched out too far for no reason other than I enjoy it far more than I thought.

Honestly, this story can be finished in three books, four if it is necessary. Though I am wondering how much of Jorildyn’s story I can add in this story. I can only make this the story of a single person where it follows into her life and bit of the lives of the people she affects.

I digress what I am saying, if it makes sense.

Also, if you are asking what Jorildyn’s goal is in the story, then I don’t know how to explain it without giving away EVERY spoiler. Her goal will make sense because of a plot twist that comes a book or two later in the series.

I write until I get bored. I’ve got at least 2 that should be more than 3 books. One has 3 finished 0 drafts.

I am just brainstorming so much though! I am getting plenty of ideas! LOL!

If you’re never planning to publish, that makes sense. Gosh, I wish I was like that! I want to write story after story till I am bored then do it all over again. I can care less about publishing.

If you are planning to publish, then the more books in your series, the better. If you’re not, then JLO’s right: write until you get bored with it. Sooner or later you’ll have said everything you have to say about Jorildyn and Alagossia, and then you’ll want to move on to the next story. Only you will know when that time has come, though.

I can’t remember how many Sherlock Holmes stories Arthur Conan Doyle wrote before he got so sick of him he killed him off, only to have his fans revolt so he had to bring him back to life in another book. Now that’s the way to do it! ヽ(^。^)丿

Thank you.

I may still publish, but I couldn’t have someone rearranging that much guts, so I likely will self-publish, one day.

Ah, I understand.

For now, I am unsure what I am doing. I just need to focus more on just writing and make sense of that later.

That is my only gripe.

You should! The self-published writers making the most money are those with the longest series, so you need to somehow link all your books together in the same universe or something. The Angel Falls Verse! ( ˆ◡ˆ)۶ ٩(˘◡˘ )

Not that I’m saying you need to publish or make money to be a success, but of course it’s always nice… (*^-‘) 乃

Update:

I have fifteen characters who each need their story told. This includes Jorildyn as well.

Geez!

Lmfao or just write Ricky’s daddy issues from 1987 to the present day! Half jokes aside, a lot of the characters to link together in some sorta way funnily enough. Same with the other worlds I made.

Broke penniless moldy dough stick goes viral for insane mind :stuck_out_tongue:

Bump.

Well, I have this 8 book series idea that will be slightly a bildungsroman meaning it will follow one character part way growing up into adulthood, and then after that, follow his apprentices growing up into older teens. It will end with the apprentice of the apprentice starting a whole new generation but in a world that is now peaceful.

So, that’s how I plan to go about that series one day.
