Last video watched? A silent longplay of Thief: The Dark Project
Last series/movie? Great British Bake Off
Books? Currently reading Only Shadows and Deception (those are 2 different titles) for Wattpad club reading. If we’re including comics, I’m nearly up to date with IDW Sonic.
Animation? The Apothecary Diaries, currently waiting for the next episode
I also have 2 physical books on TBR, which I ought to get to sometime XD
I don’t watch tv or movies anymore since I don’t have time, but the last thing I read was Lisa Cron’s latest, Story or Die, followed by a few dozen poems by Emily Dickinson I’d never read before. I only read those to get ahead on my Goodreads challenge for this year since I was falling behind. Now I’m 30 books ahead! (♯^.^ღ)
They were all excellent. I’m now reading a cheesy Georgette Heyer romance called Venetia, which is pretty good so far. (ɔ˘ ³(˘ᴗ˘ღ)
Something a little different, the last two professional presentations I watched were history lectures by Haviv Rettig Gur, posted on YouTube.
They are long and dense lectures, but very informative and entertaining. If Haviv was my history teacher (at least for Middle East history) in high school, I would have easily aced my Seniors’ exam.
Books:
I finished The Greystone Secrets trilogy a few days ago. It was quite good. An average of 4.5 stars for the whole trilogy. It started out as a middle grade mystery and turned into a dystopian sci-fi-esque story involving a parallel world. First book was pretty cool because the sudden very dark turn was a pleasant surprise (I went into this knowing nothing and paid very little attention to the blurb). Second book was a nail-bitingly exciting book. The third book had me tearing up twice and left me with hope and wonderment.
Movies:
I recently watched Doctor Sleep. That was an interestingly fantasy-esque Stephen King movie. I didn’t expect that. I have seen The Shining, but I don’t exactly remember if the “shining” was explained then. But it was cool. I loved this one moment where one character captures the villain for a second and scares her. That was fun Beware of powerful good guys, evil lady.
Also saw, Sunshine on Leith (apparently originally a play…maybe it should have stayed that way ). It’s a British romantic musical comedy, and it was certainly…interesting. It felt a little bit odd for a musical because there were scenes where the characters were singing, but people around them were looking at them like “why the heck are you singing, weirdos?” and it was kind of cringe
It wasn’t like Annie where the music is somehow directly incorporated into the scene (Annie 1982 “I think I’m gonna like it here” has a guy dancing and climbing up to give her flowers, but it’s not seen as odd) or merged with the dialogue (Hairspray 2007 “I can hear the bells” has Penny talking with Tracy as if the lyrics are part of their dialogue). There were so many musical moments detached from what the people in the background were doing. I feel like it just became one big cringe when it could have been a really sweet movie that showed couples dealing with tough moments but getting through them.
The songs didn’t always match the scenes either. It was like everything felt a little bit forced. Kind of like it was trying to be Mamma Mia but failed to make the songs really mesh together with the plot. There’s a scene where the mom sings and there’s a “yeah” in the lyrics and it was so odd for her to say it because she didn’t speak that way. She wasn’t singing the way she spoke and the song didn’t make sense for that moment either.
Another thing that didn’t make sense was a song about not getting to see the local sights anymore. Idk if it was meant to be sad, or what. It just seemed odd because the reason the daughter was hesitating to leave wasn’t because she was going to miss her town… That was obvious in a previous scene.
I did like the Scottish accents rep. That was fun for my ears. Such a disappointment though. The film could have been so much better. Idk if it is any better as a play, but if the songs are really the same… eh
Sorry didn’t mean to leave a critique, but I had thoughts
