"Why must you tell this story?"

I’ve been wondering this for the longest time with Project Succession and most of my stories. Though I am going to mention Project Succession much more.

I can’t quite remember why I’ve grown so attached to Project Succession. I’m already on draft 6 and this is the only novel that I’ve worked so hard on. That’s not a good enough reason to continue telling this type of story. I didn’t think I would get to this point in Project Succession’s growth.

The reason why I want to tell my stories is possibly because of vibes and because it is cool. That’s the only reason I can think of because there’s nothing else. I still love to write and share my writing, but if you were to ask me why I want to write that certain story, my answer would be because it’s a cool idea/concept and nothing more.

I never write based on real world issues or what is bothering me. I escape too much and that can be looked at as a bad thing by some people. I just think of an idea that I find amazing and begin to start writing it.

Anything that requires plenty of research or hits too close to home, takes me out of the story.

Anyway, I just want to know why I truly want to write these stories or why I want to write in general. I know it’s to tell a story, but the stories are more of a cool idea that could go nowhere.

I could be overreacting but honestly I tend to ponder about myself when it comes to writing. Stories should be more than just a “cool idea” or “awesome vibes”. It can have those things, but it should also have some meaning to it. My stories don’t have a deep meaning to it or a meaning at all.

What are your thoughts?

Bonus Question:

What is the reason for you writing your current story? Meaning, why do you want to tell that story most of all?

Some people might write a story to be a voice, send a message, or give dreams to little kids, or show some representation, but not all stories have to be like that

You know what? A cool idea could impact someone in ways you could never imagine

Doesn’t have to be deep on your end. Let readers make it deep :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m writing this story because I like it, and if I like it, there will be other people like me who like it, too. But first and foremost, I write because I like it. I like it so much that I want to tell it to people

And if I don’t, it’ll keep bothering me XD

Mainly I write to understand my inner workings and work through feelings that I have and bring myself to cathartic place so that I can accept the reality of the world.

But also, I usually write because I want to change the world. Kind of a lofty goal, yes, but… it’s not necessarily unrealistic.

Cuz even if my writing doesn’t change the world, it might help ME do that.

But I guess it all doesn’t have to be the same for everyone?

I think you write to escape, and that will always be true. So it’s not really what you write that matters for it to be a reason to write.

I’d recommend checking out this video on writer archetypes, figuring out which one you are, and using that to see potential reasons why you write. There’s also advice on what process suits you best and pros and cons of your type.

There is a very nasty trend to assume someone who says this type of thing is right wing, in writing spaces…as in I just read through a fight on that two days ago. It’s the whole “all books are political” fight.

There’s a lot less room to write a story around a belief you don’t hold, when people take these stances too far.

But I mostly write to worldbuild, not preach. That doesn’t mean I won’t hold a preachy view on something, it’s just that I’m going to balance that against a story’s needs, and that can put me on the wrong side of a fight I didn’t ask for, easily.

My brain constantly comes up with new and crazy ideas for stories. It’d be a waste not to write them.

I write my stories because a lot of people have told me I’m incapable of creativity. Spite is a good motivator  Plus I just like writing anyway :joy:

I don’t really have a reason for why I tell a certain story other than “why the hell not”. I don’t actually put that much thought into it :joy: Really it just helps keep the noise in my head under control

That’s probably the best reason to write. If you don’t have some connection to the story, even if it seems silly sometimes, it’s so hard to write.

Sometimes you’ll never find the single reason you write or enjoy the stories or the process. It’s probably a whole bunch of little things that have made your brain go “hey I know let’s write a book”.

I’m the opposite. The more research, the better. It’s taken 3 years of research on Babylonian mythology to write a 112 page novella

i’m cursed so that i start losing my mind if i don’t do the writing.

Sure, but you can still write stories that are just that, for fun. Or for practice! I don’t write with the intent to deliver a message, my foremost goal is to tell a good story, everything else (like adding meaning) serves that goal.
