Bizarrchitecture. How do you describe something with bizarre architecture?

Whether it is alien bizarre or your standard bizarre, how do you describe something that is weird/odd looking in design?

Like a building which looks normal at first glance from the interior, but inside is widely different. Or a building that is weird both inside and out. How do you describe a building or something with such a weird, wonky, bizarre design and layout?

Better yet, how would you describe through the eyes of your characters who are just as surprised by the design as you are…maybe.

I ask this because Alagossia has some buildings that are weird looking to just plain alien looking and describing it in a way that the characters are seeing…is a challenge.

What are your thoughts and feelings? Do you have any bizarrchitecture in your own stories?

If you still don’t know what that is here’s a link.

And how would you describe that for your character when writing?

Shining silver blobby building, complete with hexagonal scales and circular windows.

Very good.

Now, what if it was something weirder looking than that? Possibly alien?

Iridescent silver building, looking like stretched out putty.

Nice! That’s really good!

Thank you.

The book Piranesi takes place in a house consisting of marble halls that enclose an ocean.

Here's how that's described...

How would you personally tackle describing bizarre architecture in your own writing?

I’d write it the same way Susanna Clark did. ¯\_(ﭢ)_/¯

I’ve read Piranesi!

It was a fascinating read and the way he describes the world, on one hand, it sounds like a boring place :stuck_out_tongue: but he also makes it sound magical somehow

I like odd structures.

I have a cliff that looks like a teapot pouring out boiling water that looks like a waterfall. You’d burn yourself if you’re under it.

Really? Is the water boiling hot?

I don’t currently have examples in my own writing, though that will probably change in the future.

I like how Jeff VanderMeer describes the bizarre in his works, particularly in the Borne trilogy and in Veniss Underground. However there are times when I wish it was just a little more concrete (although counterintuitively that would ruin the effect of his style)

Yep. Probably from volcanic activity. Like Yellowstone.

Have you seen the movie Annihilation?
I’ve only seen the movie, haven’t read the book.

I have! I read the series as well, except for Absolution which came out recently. It was a decent movie though it departed significantly plotwise from the book. But I don’t think the book was very well-suited to movie adaption to begin with.

Makes sense. Though the movie was alright with me, I can understand that having that as a movie wasn’t well suited.
