my response would be:
It’s almost always the characters. or a very specific scene that I really want to write.. so I make the entire book just to be able to write that ONE scene lol.
it’s almost never the setting (i struggle with setting a LOT) and it’s sometimes the problem or the villian that comes to me.
also it’s sometime more philosophical themes, like the meaning of life or facing your fears.
I despise research, and only write what I know. i’ve learned this the hard way I tried setting a book in the 1800s england, but I was sorely disapointed by my lack of interest in research. it feels limiting… cuz if you get ONE historical detail wrong, then your entire plot is essentially screwed if it depends on it.

also, because i have intense synesthesia, I don’t usually write using conventional methods lol. sometimes I pick words/symbols because they taste good 
Literally! they do!
sounds look live visuals for me, so sometimes that inspires me to create aesthetics. it’s also how I would make music (if I made music lol).

I hate sticking to plots so much, to be honest. Because the story changes, the more I actually find out about the characters and their lives. It’s never static.
