Foxwood's "Ask me about characters, magick, setting, and I'll ask you, too"

At least that means Caspian tigers are still extant. And so are passenger pigeons, tasmanian tigers, Japanese sea lions, barbary lions and Carolina parakeets. Yay! That’s good enough.

Nice!

Wait, that’s illegal. But was he killed legally? If not, maybe he can make a case.

I don’t know what the name of my world is, I just call it the Teslaverse.

As for fun facts:

  • The technology is roughly 1890s level, but without guns (guns are there, but it’s complicated), plate armour (also there but complicated) or trains (actually quite prevalent). They also have electronic computers, aeroplanes and robots.
  • There are Pleistocene animals and also non-avian dinosaurs, but I was really careful with what can exist, and created a massive spreadsheet of animals. In most environments, the largest animal is a 20-ton elephant, followed by a smaller elephant and a rhino (usually 2-5 tons). And the dinosaurs are typically smaller: fox-sized dromaeosaurids (raptors), pig-like oviraptorids, ostrich-sized ornithomimids, and so on. The largest dinosaur in most environments barely exceeds 1 ton.
  • My people are humans, technically, but they can live for 600+ years, are usually taller and more stronger, and more physically resistant. This is because of a moment in the past. Unfortunately, even with such long lives and great wisdom, they still keep on fighting.

Let’s do a comparison between worlds, since I guess our worlds are in the same time period. What are you using for inspiration for the architecture and stuff?

It was getting kinda long XD

(I think I need to start doing this for everyone else, too :stuck_out_tongue: )

Yeah, at least in the demon and angellic world, because it’s considered “cheating the system“.

He wasn’t killed legally. Actually, it was kind of his fault (as in, he poked the lion too much), but it was a crime.

Oh cool. What is the purpose of the robots? And what level of robot are we talking? Just the kind in factories, or do they exist in normal households?

Ahhh, this is where your epic spreadsheet comes in! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

As humans do, of course

So, the humans and these dinosaurs and this technology… it’s an interesting combination, so…how do they coexist? You said there’s aeroplanes, but there’s also flying type dinos?

Do the humans hunt the dinos for game or food? Or clothes?

We can, but I don’t have mine too fleshed out :stuck_out_tongue:

So, all inspiration did come from the 1850s strictly at first. I looked up old photos from the 1850s and then looked for documentaries or blogs about old architecture or culture (tend to find things about the 1870s-90s which is why I expanded my inspiration to the 1890s).

I try to use similar terminology for describing buildings and streets. Arcanland is inspired by 1850s-90s USA, so, I look up a lot of USA history and historical documentaries. I love using the slang of the time, so I do add in a few, but of course making sure I don’t unintentionally use something offensive.

Did that answer your question?

I also look up a lot of major historical moments of the time and add in historical easter eggs like a world expo because that happened. Always look for photos.

Then I think a good lawyer could save him. He better call Saul.

So far I have simple spider robots carrying tea-trays, they’re more of a gimmick than a technological progression, since their world doesn’t require automation of that scale yet. I’ve been researching this for quite some time now, and basically my world is already modern, but they simply don’t have the incentive to modernise as much.

Yep! And I still have more columns to add.

The dinosaurs are just animals, so they live like any other animals do. I have:

therizinosaurids that live like giraffes

dromaeosaurids that live in jackals or wolves

ornithomimids that live in ostriches (and are used as mounts)

oviraptorids that live like boars

…and so on.

You can eat some of them, though I think the raptors are too cute so you’d want to play with them. They might steal your sausages though.

Oh, that’s actually good. I kinda did the same, and in addition used RDR2 as an inspiration.

A few of my main characters have disabilities that are lesser represented in media… namely, MY disabilities. And this character has a disability that is very close to mine, although slightly different. It’s one that I’ve never seen portrayed in any media, even as a joke/bad representation, and I feel bad that this character is going to be finished with so soon! :frowning: I might have to make another MC with the same disability xD

I think I'll follow your example, hehe, so clicky for my answers to your questions! :D

I’d say he only remembers like, maybe two things from his past? He remembers someone calling him “Edin” and he remembers his age (21 when he was rescued), but nothing else.

He does remember what happens after the rescue but not before. It’s sort of like accidentally deleting everything in your camera roll—it won’t stop you from storing new pictures, but you just can’t get the old ones back :smiling_face_with_tear:

I will be completely honest and say that I wing the magic or keep the magic system on the softer side  that being said, there are a few unique things shadow magicians can do that light magicians can’t:

  1. Create and manipulate illusions.
  2. Create and control golems, shadow creatures, and that sort of stuff.
  3. Conceal objects, people, and other things.

They can also destroy illusions and unhide things, but to be fair, light magicians can do those things too :face_with_tongue:

So one thing that I tend to keep across different magic systems is that light magic and shadow magic aren’t opposites—rather, dark magic, also known as sorcery, is the one that conflicts them. I see light and shadow magic as complements!

To put it one way, shadows need light to exist, so they coexist harmoniously, whereas darkness is the complete absence of light :winking_face_with_tongue:

Aww, thank you!

And likewise for your characters :p

Has he tasted chicken blood before? What would his reaction be to, say, an undercooked and bloody chicken drumstick :face_with_tongue:

Damn.

I guess he and Edin are opposites in that case. While Edin does get bloodthirsty, he honestly doesn’t really enjoy killing or anything like that, but he sees killing beasts as something he has to do as a gifted.

I wonder what they’d be like in a room together :thonk:

I’m sorry but I’m picturing him with a long and pointy nose  like poking into a newspaper or something. Does he read newspapers? I imagine he reads a lot of newspapers.

Burnt broccoli  poor guy.

Oh, dear me… Indeed I’ve had some Real Life shit to deal with, and I have put much on the backburner so it would seem. Including being here and my writing alongside many other things… The shouting into the void is often what calls us back…

What is the Dragon Helm?…

Just that… A Helm with an odd connective ability… Not sure how to explain it’s ability, but… Well…

Let me explain it’s looks firstly. It’s a helmet of course, but it is of a design that has a Dragon upon it… For sure, eh? Like we did not see that coming… So, the body of the Dragon crests it’s loft, head and neck reaching down to cover the nose, yet it’s wings reach forth, spread out covering what would normally be the sockets for the eyes. When you wear it you cannot see… Sounds stupid to have a helm you cannot use practically…

But it is within it’s blindness that the artefact has it’s worth… For when a chosen few wear it, they can connect with the Drakes, and one more so… Essingvaux, Greatest of all Drakes… While you can commune with him, you also exchange sight… Seeing what he sees, and in turn himself seeing what you perceive as a duel vision of sorts. Like an overlay of your perception in his waking eyes…

Somehow I feel like this is a little silly and childish, but I see it in a way that makes sense to me… I do struggle to see how I will write it down. The visual side of things and how both Essingvaux and Aldan the Newly Found Protag envision it…

Tough times ahead I guess…

Hope you are well, and keep shouting into the Void!

Questions

here you go!

Okay, let us begin!

What does Theodore think of his Kayosic heritage? Is it important? Does he want to get away from it?

Does he follow the bracelet giving tradition? Does he have one from someone?

What is his relationship like with his dad who tried to set him up with the arranged marriage deal? Is his mom in his life? What is their relationship like if she is?

What do his parents think of Jax? Do they like him?

Rose (shares the name with a character in my story)

What is Rose’s heritage? What does she think of it?

What is her relationship like with her father before and after the arranged marriage thing? What about her mother? In her life? If so, what’s the relationship like?

Is Rose an only child, or does she have siblings?

lol, I love that XD

When it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be

For this story? Sort of?

It’s largely based on Christianity, but there’s some differences. I also incorporated a lot of whatever they love to do in horror movies regarding Christianity. Anything to do with angels and demons, that is.

I love what I did with demons and angellics, and how they work. I flipped a lot of horror movie things, and also tried to make lore that answers some questions I had about angels and demons.

So, I would think, “If it was like this, it would make much more sense :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the biggest struggle is what to do with the idea of a God. I do know that I want a higher being situation in my story, but it has to work across the entire world, despite some countries following different religions. I want to create lore that answers my question about what is a God, does it exist and where, and why do so many people have a different idea about it in our world?

I think I have some idea of what to do, but I have to think more about it while trying not to overthink it :stuck_out_tongue:

Interesting  Why is that? Are they more or less satisfied with what they have? Or do they have other things to deal with first?

Okay, tell me three things about your world  Whatever you want. But know that I’ll ask questions based on those three things.

It’s extremely loose and soft XD

People who have angellics attached to them, will develop powers related to that angellic. Angellics won’t suddenly disappear. When you are a baby, you will have one if they want to be with you.

As I said, magick depends on the angellic meaning, whatever they already have, they will give half of it to you. You can’t choose what to get, and you can’t switch either.

The other magick is the ones from demons. Also, half the strength like angellics. These you can choose from. Usually just one. But if you’re clever about it, you can get a few of them. You’re never born with a demon at your side. Demons must be summoned and then contracted with if you want their powers.

Aaaand, that’s about it :stuck_out_tongue: There might be powers you can get from demonic creatures or the disgraced, but I’m thinking it’s the same as demons.

What disability is this, if you don’t mind my asking?

Is it lesser known? In reality, in our world as we know it? Do a lot of people not have it or something?

You might just have to

Heyyyy

questions and stuff for you!

questiums (I have to put text before a quote because otherwise, the summary thing does a weird thing, so you get a bonus random thing here XD )

Does he know for sure this is his name and not a nickname or last name?

Does meeting people who knew him, or going to places he’s been before, ever trigger any memories in the story?

Same XD

But I have to ask, is there a range? A limit?

I see! That’s cool!

It’s kind of like my World of Elgana, although everyone in Elgana think lunar magick and shadow magick are destined to fight and be opposites :stuck_out_tongue:

Makes me think about how demon powers and angellic powers are not different at all. They’re practically the same thing and just come from different creatures. Because, you can get seer powers from both demons and angellics.

Okay, tell me three things about your world, so I can ask questions XD

There’s some answers, and a fun little Mallord bit

Answers and a snippet

He would lick chicken blood if they were out of pig blood but not willingly. Charcoal wouldn’t mind whatever. He’s a demon! :stuck_out_tongue:

omg  Edin might get owned in several different ways

Richard owns rooms because he’s got the charisma. He might have Edin do his bidding because he’d definitely see him a useful :stuck_out_tongue: Unless Edin can hold his own. But how human is Edin? Because he might faint at the sight of Charcoal in full form. Most humans do.

But if you are bloodthirsty, doesn’t that mean you do enjoy the killing because it brings the blood?

Does Edin have a certain method of murderous madness? Richard definitely does. Several of them. He also plans his attacks to a tee.

lol

The first scene with him:

Mallord set aside the Westerfield Gazette. An Extra had been shoved in with the paper as well and it was all about these new mediums from the beer-loving, dance-adoring, hard-working nation of Deuskauz. Mallord sighed, hoping these ones weren’t frauds like all the others.

oh yeah, you wouldn’t want to say it to his face. It’ll make him wrathy. And you don’t want to make Will wrathy. His temper is infamously short.

Heeeeyyyy, shouting out into the void! SD in the Void, do you reach me?

I have responses and questions for you in here

Oooooh, that’s so cool! So, how does it help during a fight?

And no, it’s not silly and childish at all

That can be tricky, can’t it? Not in this story, but in other stories I’ve had magical artifacts to describe. I usually write a scene where character is first seeing it, or somehow reminiscing about first getting it, and running their fingers over it so I can describe it XD

And then I constantly make subtle descriptions about it, like, maybe the carvings in the pendant are fun to fiddle with and maybe character runs the fingers along the grooves absentmindedly. Just little things so the reader can vaguely picture it’s most prominent features.

Maybe you’ll have places to put in scenes like that?

Tell me more about Essingvaux. What makes him the greatest? How old/ancient is he? Where did he come from?

They simply didn’t have the incentive. People forget this when designing their world that your world needs an incentive for things to change.

For instance, the Ancient Greeks knew of the power of steam. They did in fact use steam power in toys and to roast kebabs. If they wanted really hard, they probably could have industrialised 2000 years ago, but they didn’t – not because they couldn’t, but because they simply didn’t have a need to. Why would they need steam engines when they had slaves to do their work for them? And then of course you had other factors like mettalurgy, the lack of precision work, and so on, but the fact is they simply had a lot of manpower, so they never needed to industrialise.

It’s pretty much the same in my world. They could have gotten trains, but they simply didn’t need to ship things from here to there as fast. Their empire does span many thousands of kilometres, but they don’t need to get things from here to there with great speed. Most people can simply wait a few weeks, especially since they live so long. What trains they do have, they’re used more sparingly for urgent matters (e.g. an army needs to move to another place ASAP).

Yeah, and dromaeosaurids are the most common pets, and they come in a variety of sizes too. The smaller ones are like 1-5 kilos, basically flying cats (and they also hunt mice). The larger ones are called houndbirds or groundhawks, and they weigh 5-15 kilos, and act like dogs. They’re very playful, love demanding cuddles, and will steal your food.

Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s probably my only favourite new game.

How does it help during the war?

Well that is connected to who Essingvaux is… And how the war of this age plays out…

The visual side of things…

This is both conflictive to me in both the Helm and What the wearer sees whilst wearing it I guess.

The imagery of the helm is easy to describe I guess, and the feeling of running fingers across it’s construction would be easy to describe also, but what the wearer sees once placed upon their head, that is a differing matter. Below is what I have written so far regarding the first time Aldan son of Culdan puts the helm on.

Distant and yet close a pale silvery light appeared before Aldan’s eyes, remote, lost to time, and in the silence that prevailed within his surroundings, a faint tongue could be heard. A language he knew not, yet had not been spoken for thirteen thousand years… Stricken with both fear and curiosity, he leaned into that voice. Mingled within the ever growing light, he denoted the common tongue, rough it seemed at first, but clear it became. “Long has it been, my friend… Why now the summoning?” It spoke gently. Aldan pulled the helm from his head, and the darkness drew from his eyes, and his vision cleared. Staring into his hearth the glow of the embers filled his sight once more… He looked upon the shielded helm trembling in fear.

The next time Aldan puts the helm on, he awaits the further clearing of the smouldering light, and indeed sees through Essingvaux’s eyes. They converse further, and it is revealed that Essingvaux had bestowed the helm to Aldan’s forefathers. And other revelations are shared between them (no spoilers). What Aldan sees through Essingvaux’s sight is softly focused and vibrantly edged with violet-green hues overlaid upon a greyscale vision. As is the spectral imagry of the Drakes… This will be harder to explain and describe I guess, but I will figure it out in time…

Tell me more about Essingvaux…

Oh boy! Where do I start… At the beginning I guess…

At the first dawn of time Essingvaux did speak, alone in the timeless darkness perceived. He alone crafted the heavens, the world, and his kin. Together the creators did build the realms of the living, and the dead and all that would dwell in his creation. After the Great War that is remembered in Arillion as the War of the Children of Mara, Essingvaux and his kin took pity for the hurts of the world that they created. They gave their very beings to heal what Mara’s children had done. With their labours complete they vanished from the world… But before they departed, Essingvaux spoke of a time of great need, when the Endurlon was nigh his voice would be heard once more in Arillion… And with that he left…

The creators took bestial forms during that time, and two remained to watch over the lands they created, for they did not despair as Essingvaux did… And as a Dragon form they watched as he departed for the solitude of his realm beyond the world of men dwarves, and elves… To Undermount he went, and claimed lordship over the drakes who dwelt there… And there he dwelt for a time, until his despair drove him utterly from this world…

During the War of the Children of Mara he crafted a helm, and bestowed it to one who he honoured. A man of true heart, who would give his all to defend the world. He passed many thousands of years ago, but passed the helm on through his family lines for many generations until it came to Culdan… Yet, Culdan died before he could hand it to his son. But seeing his own demise, he bestowed it for safe keeping to a friend, for a time when his son would come of age, or The Endurlon would begin…

Sorry for the long additional history and such, but I felt it would explain a little more of who Essingvaux is, why he is missing, and the importance of the Dragon Helm.

Hope things are a little more clearer…

Geez I hadn’t thought about it that way :joy: I’m not sure if there would be a way to essentially “one up” the regular magic wielders but that’s the way I’d personally go about it

Tis better than none

Fair enough :joy:

Are the princes the kids of the King? Or is it totally unrelated?

Ayyy now you have to use that pun at some point in a story :joy:

Can the demons eat anything other than souls? Are there other ways to get energy/power aside from souls?

Do it :eyes:

That’s a really good twist. You don’t usually see the Angels fighting amongst themselves (aside from the civil war thing whatever that was about) so it would be an interesting change. Even more so if this is happening while the demons are standing there like “bruh wtf fight me” :joy:

Yeah it’s defs getting long :joy:

Answers

Less “look” more “feel”. It’s a feeling of uneasiness that gets followed. Like I said, hard to follow :joy:

Tbh it’s just what the Gods/Vetlun have been saying forever :joy: It’s doubted because a lot of the Gods are known for exaggerating their stories, especially if it makes them look cooler.

The main theory is they come into existence when that concept does (eg Deity of Music is born when music first happens). Then there’s others about family trees and whatnot but that more applies to the Gods than Vetlun, plus some stories about how ancient “lost Gods” created some of the Gods.

Amneris is by far my most powerful character so yes, she has very big powers :joy: So she’s a Phoenix, Balance Keeper, the Eternal and Immortal. She has her regular powers (which she doesn’t find out about until book 4 :joy:), plus the Balance Keeper powers, plus the Weapon (very powerful energy source she absorbed because reasons), and her own Deity powers plus everything she’s picked up along the way.

Light magic? Got it. Dark magic? Not her strong point but still there. Death magic? Learnt it from a friend. Life magic? Welp, she had to make those other Immortals (including Hathor) somehow. Creation and destruction? Yup, both. Reality alteration? Can do it but gets in a lot of trouble. Primordial forces? They’re there too. Elemental forces? Tick. Space magic? Must be tuesday. Rifts? Doesn’t have the best aim (running gag) but can do it. Realistically the only thing she can’t do is stuff relating to antimatter. She can technically do a little Time Magic but refuses because “Time Magics and Immortals don’t mix”. A lot of the Primordials don’t like her because she’s stronger than them individually. She has a mutual dislike with one of the First Beings while the other finds her situation endlessly amusing.

There are quite a few conspiracies about why Amneris has so much power but nothing has been proven accurate yet that other characters know of :eyes:

Oh yah defs that would work very well with your stuff.

Okay yes you’re 100% gonna offend people with that take which means you are doing it properly and should keep doing it  But seriously that actually makes a lot of sense. There isn’t always something further up the food chain, we just like to think there is.

I have something similar tbh. It goes with the “everything exists somewhere” logic. Some souls just . . . stop. Because that’s what they believe happens next. So there’s nothing. Some wander around for a while, some go into afterlives, some get reincarnated, some end up becoming other things (eg the Deathwalkers).

Good and evil with my stuff is what I hope comes across as “realistic”. There’s no direct split and everyone is capable of either. Eg Naka (the First Being of Evil, Darkness and Chaos) is a lot more likeable and open to things that Naiu (First Being of Good, Light and Order). Phoenixes are neither good nor evil. It depends on how they develop in any given life. Same deal with Vetlun. Most of them are just bored. Also same deal with Primordials. They have differing morals, ideas of what is right and wrong, and their own beliefs around what they should be able to do without punishment.

In the case of my MCs, Hathor is more on the “good” side and follows the rules while Amneris is more of an “antihero” because she’s done some things she’s not proud of plus being generally OP. Xix (Amneris’ half-sister) is also on “good” but can also be pretty “neutral” because her family’s history is a bit yikes. So, yeah, everyone is capable of either no matter which side they claim to be on. Hell, I have a whole alternate Creation where Amneris is the big bad and Xix is the one trying to defeat her.

This is one of those “no one knows” deals. The Walls are presumed to have been made by part of Creation when it was created. They’re not maintained, more monitored by the Lyriumians and Terpolites so nothing bad happens (which, as I’m sure you’ve figured out, failed miserably :joy:). The Vetlun don’t even know the Walls are there in most cases, they just jump back and forth between realities like it’s nothing. The only thing that has tried to destroy the Walls and almost succeeded is Void and the Voidlings, but that was more because Void was hungry and the Voidlings wanted revenge on Creation more than anything else :joy:

I wouldn’t put it past certain Vetlun to destroy the Walls for fun if they were aware of them tbh :joy:

Same, I love this stuff. I’ve got so many books, so many science article memberships and have a lot of notes on the stuff I actually do end up using in my writing, whether it’s legit, yet to be discovered or just a conspiracy :joy:
