NOTE: READING BOOKS, WHETHER FICTION OR NONFICTION IS A CHORE FOR ME! AND IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THE BOOKS THEMSELVES ARE BORING, READING AS A WHOLE IS A STRUGGLE AND A CHORE!!!
I have not read any fiction novels in what feels like months because of life, unwillingness to read, and writing.
I need to read some books, but if I force myself I will hate it. Though I can’t even will myself naturally to read some books, physical or audiobook. This is a sucky situation no matter what I do.
Then when I do read, I end up doing it for one or two days then stop going back to it. Because distractions and I don’t want to do it any longer. Whenever I read, I have to stop because I just want to write or do something else.
Reading fiction novels is such a chore, but writing them is a different story.
I hate myself for being like that.
Whether it’s aphantasia or something else entirely, I’ve always struggled with reading, while writing just comes naturally to me. It’s so damn weird and sad.
Writers need to read, but when it comes to reading fiction for me, it is such a mega pain in the ass.
I don’t like that I need some discipline for something that should come easy for me.
I don’t know what to do and I doubt anybody can help. This is solely a me problem but I had to vent because I am frustrated with myself.

You could try reading aloud. It would be a different experience.

Interesting. I don’t know if that is feasible for me, but I shall give it a try and see.

Some older books were meant to be read aloud, as well.

I don’t have older books. What exactly do you mean by “older” though?

Books published before the 20th century.

I listen to them then don’t go back to listening to them.
I will read a book, but I am never consistent with it. That is my main issue. I lack consistency when it comes to reading.

you said you can do it for one or two days and then you pretty much give up
a few clarifying questions
- how long are you reading for those one or two days like in terms of minutes or hours?
- do you give up on reading in general or just on that book?

is you reading for 2 to 4 hours like you forcing yourself to read for that long until you can’t anymore or it just happens easily but then once you are done you are done?

If this is regarding audiobooks, then it just happens easily where I am listening to a few chapters then I stop to focus on something else. Then I struggle to go back to it. If it is reading physical books, I will read up to chapter five or ten one day then up to chapter twenty another day then find that I am unable to go back to it.

Although, some books I have read to the end, but that was a spur of the moment thing that doesn’t always happen to me.

Add reading to your daily routine. 20-30 mins is plenty.
Try reading something you wouldn’t normally read. Thrillers & romance are pretty good at getting you hooked. Try a good memoir too

If all else fails, I like to listen to Horrobable in the evenings before I sleep.

I have been reading thrillers, but the results are the same. I can get at least twenty or a bit more chapters in until I can’t do it any longer. I’m surprised I can last that long.
There is also the possibility that I am just not getting anything out of it when I read because I suffer with seeing the story.

ah kk.
lets break this up into phases
you starting to read/ listen–> why do you? -you feel you are supposed to as a writer and that excites you so you do??
continuinng to read/ listen–> why do you? the idea that you are doing what you as supposed to do as a writer excites you so you continue to
stopping reading/ listening–> something else comes up that excites/ interests you more that doing what you are supposed to do as a writer so you do that instead
not returning to read/ listen why don’t you?–> you think how can i be a writer if i don’t do what im supposed to do as a writer and that discourages/ demotivates you more than the excitment of doing what you are supposed to do
note there is no supposed to do, im just seeing if maybe this is what goes through your mind?

i think @JojoDahlia is suggesting that if you read less at one time it may be easier to read more consistently.
like don’t read until you can’t stop before that happens. and then pick up again the next day.
