Lesson 2 - Making A Banner
Also! Cutting out images and using masks =)
Assignment - Find a background image on unsplash and a non cut out image (png) of an actor/actress or model. Cut of the image using one of the methods shown and refine your cutout. Add the background and cut out image to your banner - Add title. You do not need to add the mask effect. - This might be in a future assignment.
Due date - 4 days after you watch the video
Sorry that the video is long - if you like it that way let me know - if not also let me know so I can find a way to talk less lmao
@CarKann first one is a bit late oopsie daisy, sorry!!
i went a bit overboard on the banner and made it a gif but i had an idea an ran with it, sorry
Lesson #2
Summary
So, I tried again. I’m actually really happy with the outcome of this banner. I did a little blending too, sorry. Maybe I don’t hate banners as much as I thought I did. lol
Sorry, I’m a bit late. Here’s my entry for lesson #1!
I learnt a ton of stuff today and kind of struggled a bit since I don’t have photoshop (I ended up using Canva but used the same technique). Do any of you guys know free alternatives to photoshop?
if you can, birdysources on tumblr has cracked versions of photoshop.
not technically legal, obviously, but free
alternatively, GIMP is decent, if a bit of a learning curve. I used to use Pixlr but I don’t know if it’s changed at all.
When you download the “app” for notifications and still don’t receive any
photopes\a and pixlr e and x arent bad alternatives, personally i use photopea
Hey guys I’m going to individually grade all the assignments today. If I have enough time I’ll start on the next lesson. What do you guys want to see in the video =)
Alright so the way I did this - I’m using a 10 points system. 10/10 means you did the assignment as asked. If you however did something noticeable that I catch (things that may be on future or old lessons) I’ll show you how to improve them. If you get a lower score then 10/10 - you may repost your assignment if you want - honestly it doesn’t matter to me but if you want to go for it! . If I’m just pointing out some tips and your score is 10/10 - you don’t need to repost - just keep it in mind for the future =)
Please don’t click the drop downs on the other students grades - to respect their privacy - unless they allow it.
Laura's Lesson 1 Grade
9/10 - Good Work!
Tips to improve! Font Blends in a little too much with the background - I would either use a shadow/glow or move the font. This picture actually has a large negative space area that’s not to close to the top where you could move it.
Laura's Lesson 2 Grade
10/10 - Awesome job! - Love the images and nice job with text behind her hair!
W.L.Ink's Lesson 1 Grade
10/10 - Great Job! - You completed the lesson as described! Font/font placement/colors are excellent! =)
Manya707 's Lesson 1 Grade
10/10 - Great Job! - Your fonts are excellent! - Especially how you added the two colors! =) Really love that flowers font btw!
Daisy's Lesson 1 Grade
10/10 - Great Job! - Since you noticed the line placement is a little off - I’m not going to knock off points - I do that too from time to time haha. Colors look great and I see a slight shadow so it doesn’t blend in with the background. Awesome!
nyxarra's Lesson 1 Grade
10/10 - Great Job! - Looks great! The color from the background and font contrast very well and it very easy to read! =)
kacchan's Lesson 1 Grade
9/10 - Great Job! - So there were two things I notice. One was the color on the title. It’s contrast/grade is a little too similar with the background so it kinda of blends in. I changed the color to b&w in that area so you can visually see how similar the colors are. So for that area I would add a shadow or glow so it would stand out a little more. The other thing was just to drop the author down a little (but this is my personal option with the ‘boarder’) The font itself and spacing looks great, and great quality image!
kacchan's Lesson 2 Grade
10/10 - Awesome job! - Love the font and the gif is awesome!
icymonkey2004's Lesson 2 Grade
10/10 - Great Job! - Beautiful picture - love the font - and great placement!
Lesson #2:
Thoughts!
You know, this was pretty difficult for me. I really enjoyed doing the assignment, but I had a difficult time finding images that I liked enough to use. That’s more of a me issue though, not so much an issue with the lesson or something. Learning curves and all that!
Either way, even though this is my first attempt at making a banner like this, I’m happy with it!
Also, I like the longer videos. I don’t mind the shorter ones, but I prefer long videos just because it feels like there’s more to learn and more for me to grasp. That’s just my opinion, though!
My thoughts:
Damn I struggled with this. I couldn’t find the perfect software to edit. I tried Photopea at first but realised that the tools were harder to use and some weren’t there that I needed. Paint 3D was my second option but it had LESSER tools to use which nearly drove me crazy since I was nearly done. In the end, I stuck with Canva. I’m not really happy with the outcome and I feel like I could have done better.
PS: Sorry for bothering you @CarKann. I think you accidentally wrote Lesson #2 for my grades in post 55 when it should be Lesson #1.
thoughts - well, thank you for making me make a banner lol, it’s been a long time since I really struggle with them. I never know what to do with the text and you can probably tell by the assignment. I’m not super happy with it but I definitely learnt some things making it! Thanks for the lesson!
Thanks for letting me know! =) (when I get some more time today or tomorrow I’ll grade your recent work too!)

Lesson 3 - Brushes!
Basics about brushes and how to create them!
Assignment - Make your own watermark! - Turn in option - Send png (transparent background) - or make a banner or cover with your watermark
Due date - 3 days after you watch the video (honestly I’m not super strict with due dates - just turn them in when you can - if you need more time just let me know)
How exactly do we send you the watermark? Do we just post it as a png or jpeg?
